A building to be proud of is a building built by Lowcock Builders.
Nolan’s Interstate Transport experienced this firsthand this year when their cutting-edge commercial/industrial building. The outstanding Nolan’s Interstate Transport Warehouse new Bowen facility was awarded multiple prestigious Master Builders Awards becoming a national finalist.
This journey to significant acclaim began at the Master Builders Mackay & Whitsundays Regional Housing & Construction Awards 2024 where Nolan’s Interstate Transport New Transport Warehouse Bowen was awarded Commercial/Industrial Building up to $5M.
From here, the building advanced to state level where it was the Queensland winner for Commercial/Industrial Building up to $5M, advancing once again to the national awards where it became a finalist.
This striking building, which sits adjacent to Lowcock Builders’ own new office space on the Bruce Highway in Bowen, is a flagship example of what this locally owned construction company can achieve.
The award-winning project features a 13,500m² concrete hardstand area, with dual entry and exit points and two internal floors. The first floor boasts four loading bays, three cold rooms, a large dry storage area, a manager’s office, a general office space, a data storage room, a reception area, a lunchroom, and amenities for male, female, and disabled unisex use.
The second floor includes four temporary accommodation rooms with ensuite bathrooms and a spacious BBQ veranda/deck area.
Andrew Tolputt, General Manager, Nolan’s Interstate Transport gave the following testimonial.
“The workmanship, ease of communication and suggestions put forward when Nolan’s was making variations made this project seamless from start to finish. Lowcock Builders also worked very closely with Refrigerated Technologies who were engaged to construct the cold-rooms and mechanical fit out along with the air conditioning for the building,” he said.
“The result was a cold store transport depot that Nolan’s is very proud of, the detail in the finished work and the look of the depot from the outside is very pleasing when driving by.”

At the Master Builders National Business Excellence Awards 2024, Lowcock Builders were honoured to be awarded Small Construction Business of the Year (turnover up to $20m).
It was their commitment to business excellence, innovation, proud history and community that were qualities identified from their award submission as the driving force behind their enduring success.
“With a deep appreciation for their team, subcontractors, suppliers, and the local community, Lowcock Builders has played a pivotal role in shaping the Bowen and Whitsunday regions’ landscape, serving as a testament to their dedication and business excellence over four generations,” Master Builders Australia.
Lowcock Builders said the following:
“As a proud Master Builders member, we are deeply grateful to be acknowledged for such a prestigious award and look forward to the new opportunities that this will lead to for our company’s future.”
“We would like to thank our amazing team, local sub-contractors and suppliers without whom we would not be here. This award is a true testament to our dedication to quality, innovation, growth & development and business excellence.”
With a long-standing proud history, Lowcock Builders is one of the longest running businesses in the region. Passing through four generations and established in 1918, the team has an extraordinary vision for superior quality and a passion for perfection.
Specialising in commercial constructions, they have developed a reputation for producing only the highest of quality projects with fully qualified and experienced staff and subcontractor teams.
The business was commenced by J.M. (Jack) Lowcock and carried on under his management until 1957 when the business passed to J.D. (Doug) Lowcock and the company J.D. Lowcock & Co. Pty. Ltd. was established. Continuing under Doug’s management until 1982, Robert and Mark Lowcock, took over management upon J. D’s retirement and operated the company successfully until their retirement at the start of 2016.
After this, Jack Lowcock continued the family legacy as the fourth generation of Lowcock’s to service the Whitsundays and surrounding areas as Lowcock Builders Pty. Ltd, the business has continued to expand to what it is today.
One of the recent highlights includes their Master Builders National Business Excellence Award 2024 where Lowcock Builders were honoured to be awarded Small Construction Business of the Year (turnover up to $20M).
Other highlights include the award winning Nolan’s Interstate Transport Warehouse project which made it all the way to National Master Builders Awards 2024 as a finalist for Commercial/Industrial Building up to $5M category.
Prior to this, Nolan’s Interstate Transport Warehouse Bowen was the Queensland winner at the Master Builders Housing and Construction Awards 2024 and winners of the Mackay & Whitsundays Regional Housing & Construction Awards 2024, for Commercial/Industrial Building up to $5M category.
Other highlights include Bowen TAFE Agriculture Centre of Excellence, which also received a Master Builder award in 2023 for facilities up to $10M. Lowcock Builders also renovated Bowen TAFE Health Space which won the 2022 Master Builders State and Regional Winner for Refurbishment/Renovation up to $750,000.
Other key projects completed over the past 12 months include Bowen State High School Resource Centre, Proserpine State High School Science Labs, Airlie Beach Car Wash, Liberty Unmanned Fuel Station, Hillview Place Units, along with the New Lowcock Builders Office facility featured in this article.

Lowcock Builders believe that real growth starts from within the community. With a strong commitment to reinvesting in the local area, they support a wide range of initiatives—from local schools and community programs to sporting teams and not-for-profit organisations.
Their dedication extends to sponsoring events and helping develop key facilities that drive the community forward. Through these efforts, Lowcock Builders is building more than just structures; they’re helping to strengthen the very foundation of the community they call home.
In addition, the mental wellbeing of the team and the broader community is paramount to Lowcock Builders who are proud to be Mates In Construction Project certified. This means that at least 80% of all their workforce, both permanent staff and sub-contractors, are trained in mental health awareness and suicide prevention.
Lowcock Builders are proud to team up with MATES in Construction as an industry partner to raise awareness, assist those in need, connect people, reduce loss, and keep boots on the ground.
At Lowcock Builders, the training events are encouraged to be fun and interactive learning sessions with group participation playing a key role, along with lucky door prizes and Sausage Sizzles provided to encourage attendance.
“The attendance is growing with each training event, it’s really positive to see. We are looking forward to facilitating many more training events across all areas of the building and construction industry in our new facility moving forward,” said Jennifer Lowcock.

Mackay is buzzing with excitement as two dynamic business couples, Mark and Nicole Laffin and Ben and Rebecca Phillips, join forces to breathe new life into the historic Hotel Mackay. Located on the corner of Victoria and Wellington Streets, this iconic pub is set for a transformation that promises to make it one of Mackay’s best family hotels and entertainment venues, complete with delicious food and a vibrant atmosphere.
With roots in the pub industry, both couples understand the importance of family traditions. Nicole’s family once managed McGuires Hotel, where she was born, making her connection to hospitality deeply personal.
“It makes for an interesting talking point on my birth certificate,” Nicole shared.
“While people traditionally think of hotels as being watering holes and places to connect with mates, they are also places where families gather to share stories, laughter, and life’s milestones; and for some, they are their home.”
Ben Phillips, head of Gardian Finance and a director of Gardian Group, shares this enthusiasm for community connections. Raised in the Leichhardt Hotel, which his family managed for decades, Ben fondly recalls the bonds formed with patrons.
“The customers became like family,” he says.
Mark has spent a significant part of his career managing various pubs along the Queensland coast, where he gained invaluable expertise in hospitality operations. His culinary passion shines through as co-owner of Laffo’s Bar & Pizzeria, where they craft hearty, family-friendly meals that have become a local favourite.
The idea to purchase Hotel Mackay was a spontaneous conversation over breakfast at Laffo’s.
“I casually asked Mark if he’d be interested in buying a pub,” Ben recalls. “Before I knew it, he was already checking it out!” With both men sensing that the pub wasn’t operating at its full potential, they quickly negotiated a deal before the property even hit the market, officially taking ownership on August 12, 2024.
As renovations are well underway, excitement is building in the community. The vision for the new Hotel Mackay revolves around creating a warm and welcoming space for families to celebrate everything from 18th and 21st birthdays to engagement parties and hens’ nights.
“We want to be the place where locals come to create lasting memories,” Mark explains.
The revamped hotel will feature a dynamic beer garden with a stage for live performances, making it Mackay’s premier outdoor venue, capturing touring bands to attract some big acts to Mackay.
Inside, the renovation will blend heritage and modern comfort, showcasing an art deco vibe with open spaces, a family-friendly restaurant and upstairs accommodation. The restaurant will offer a range of hearty meals, from succulent steaks to delicious pasta dishes, ensuring that families can enjoy good food without breaking the bank.
“Our goal is to become the go-to spot for great steak in Mackay!” says Nicole.
In honour of Ben’s late brother Peter, the venue will also feature Puffa’s Sports Bar. A tribute to Peter’s competitive spirit and legacy in rugby league, the bar will be adorned with memories of Puffa, celebrating his contributions to the local sports scene.
“We want it to feel like a place where people can gather to enjoy sport on the big screen and reminisce,” Ben adds.
“This is about more than just a pub; it’s about building a place that embodies the spirit of our community,” Nicole added.
With a vision for the grand re-opening in mid-2025 and a shared vision for a family-friendly future, Mark, Nicole, Ben, and Rebecca are ready to bring a fresh take to this historic pub, proving that the heart of Mackay truly beats in its vibrant community.

In the gentle pace of the Pioneer Valley, where each property holds a story of its own, Robyn Agius has quietly shaped her own impressive chapter. With new talent joining her ranks and a historic Marian building soon to welcome clients, Robyn’s accomplishments have been woven subtly into the fabric of the Valley, one sale, one step at a time. For Robyn, this year’s highlights are simply part of her dedication to the people and place she calls home.
Recognition for Robyn came this year in the form of the Area Specialist award for Top Regional Salesperson, a nod to her dedication and the impact she’s made.
“Forging a path for a new brand in this area has taken determination, persistence, and a clear vision of how Area Specialist is perceived in the region,” Robyn explains.
Guided by the innovative values of Area Specialist founder Michael Choi—transparent communication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to clients—Robyn has set a standard of service that resonates with both her clients and community.
Robyn also achieved the Area Specialist Pinnacle Tier this year, a recognition awarded for outstanding sales performance. For every property sold, Robyn donates $1,000 to local schools or charities, “Thanks to my sellers, we’ve been able to give back in a way that truly impacts our local community,” she said.
Reflecting on a mosaic of memorable moments, she recounts a particularly special sale: “A lovely elderly family was living on a small regional acreage, and we sold their property in two parcels, nearly reaching $1M.” But her support didn’t stop there; she also helped them find their next home, a match that’s turned out beautifully for the family.
“Knowing I could assist them in this next chapter is something I’ll always cherish,” she says.
Set to open this November, her Marian office represents another milestone—a labour of love that has deepened her ties to the Pioneer Valley’s history. Located on 337 Anzac Avenue, the building holds memories of yesteryear. As she renovates while preserving the building’s historical charm, Robyn is gathering stories of the building's past, hoping to honour its history for all who visit.
"The Valley has grown so much since we arrived in 2002, and I’m thrilled to be a part of that history," she says, and invites anyone who may have historic photos or information about the treasured building to share their knowledge with her.
Robyn’s passion for the Pioneer Valley runs so deep that it not only fuels her own work but inspires others to see the Valley’s potential as a united collective. If you flip this magazine over to Tripping, you'll find a feature dedicated to the beauty and heritage of the Pioneer Valley—a vision Robyn herself has championed, connecting a community where each success story builds momentum for the next.
As the demands of her career mounted, Robyn realised she needed to expand her team to elevate the experience for her clients. Enter Shirlz Russell, an independent agent renowned for her exceptional work ethic and unwavering integrity. Alongside her, Mackell Caruana has stepped in as the new administrative and social media whiz, enabling both Robyn and Shirlz to focus on what truly matters: their clients and community initiatives.
“Having them on board means we can deliver a level of service that truly reflects our commitment,” she said.
For Robyn, 2024 has been a remarkable chapter—a blend of professional triumphs, community dedication, and personal treasures. And as she looks to the future, one thing is certain: the Pioneer Valley is all the richer for her presence.

The clinic always ensures they build a great relationship with their clients, and pride themselves in their honest approach towards animal care.
Kath and Mark love having their business in the Whitsundays stating that the beautiful community and stunning location make this the perfect home for them.
Despite their busy schedules, Kath and Mark always make time to follow their passion for animals beyond the veterinary clinic. From exploring nature to recently attending the Bowen Races, whenever they can be close to animals, they are content.

With a flick of a switch the heavy humid days and the hot sticky nights disappear as the clean cooling air of a Mitsubishi Electric air-conditioning unit washes over you. Clearing the senses and relaxing the body, you can finally escape the heat for much-needed replenishment. This relief is felt not only by humans but also by our playful pooches like Mitsubishi Mo, who works alongside his owner Harry Russell at WhitCool Airconditioning. Mo loves sitting underneath his Mitsubishi Electric air-conditioning unit and letting the icy air cool his thick fluffy coat.
WhitCool is a family-owned business that opened its doors in January 2022 and is owned by Harry Russell and his cousin Mitch Russell.
At WhitCool, they supply and install Mitsubishi Electric air-conditioning units, and Harry said the high-quality product and good workmanship is something they pride themselves in.
By working with builders and clients WhitCool install air-conditioning units into new homes, ensuring that air-con is available to the homeowner from the second they walk into their new home. WhitCool also install air-conditioning units in commercial premises and domestic properties. They also offer repairs and servicing.
“We're big believers in if it's broken don't throw it away, we can fix it. We can replace a part and hopefully try to get another couple of years out of an air-con, rather than trying to replace it,” said Harry.
“We can go to any house with any brand of Air Con and try to repair it, whether it's gas leaks, PCBs or electronics. We always try to push and get a repair done first before trying to find a replacement.”
What sets WhitCool apart from other air-conditioning businesses in the region is its dynamic young team. Harry himself is 28 and he says the whole crew are fairly young but full of technical knowledge and experience which far surpasses their years.
The youngest member of the team is Miniature Schnauzer Mo who is just over one year old.
Although Mo is very new to the business, Harry has noticed Mo making a big impact on promotions.
“Whenever I put a photo of him up or he goes on one of my social media stories, I get a lot of hits,” laughed Harry.
Mo loves attention and he thoroughly enjoys it when Harry brings him into work, he has a great time playing fetch with customers or receiving pats.
“He just brings a lot of energy to the job site and puts a lot of smiles on customers’ faces too!” Harry explained.
“A lot of customers request me to bring him!”
If you would like to meet Mo in person, give Harry a ring at WhitCool and ask him to bring his friendly pooch along to the job. For a fair price, great service and knowledgeable crew, WhitCool have all your air-conditioning needs covered.

There’s truly no one like Candy, the four-legged assistant who’s ready to greet you with a wagging tail at Elegance Lymphatic Care.
As you slide open the clinic doors, you’re welcomed into a warm, inviting space and by none other than a friendly, well-mannered kelpie-cross staffy named Candy.
Her story is as charming as her name. It all began when a client on her way to an appointment at Elegance Lymphatic Care, stumbled upon a lonely puppy with a can stuck on her head. The clinic’s owner, Laura Hamilton, offered to look after her until a home could be found … and she never left.
Laura said that from that quirky encounter came her fitting name: Can-dy.
“Fast forward thirteen years, and Candy is now a beloved family and community member,” Laura said.
“Our daughter especially adores her, and the bond between them is truly unbreakable.”
Despite her advanced age, heart failure, the challenges of a small liver and lymphoedema pooling in her stomach, Candy has thrived under Laura's care over the years.
That’s because Laura has been quietly revolutionising lymphatic care, blending advanced technology with traditional massage techniques to offer hope to those battling lymphoedema, lipedema, and post-surgical swelling.
Her clinic in Marian has become a retreat for those seeking relief, from athletes to patients recovering from major surgeries. And, in a serendipitous twist of fate, it wasn’t just her human clients who found relief—her beloved pup, Candy, also benefited.
With her professional expertise, Laura has been treating Candy's lymphoedema by using a specialised laser tool to improve circulation, along with a lymphatic taping technique known as jellyfish taping for extra support.
The results have been remarkable, with Laura saying that even the vet has noticed the vast improvements in Candy’s health.
Whether you’re visiting the clinic for a lymphatic press, manual lymphatic drainage, decongestion therapy, low level cold laser or Hivamat treatment, you’re in the capable hands of Laura - with Candy by your side for extra comfort.
Candy is a hit with clients at Elegance Lymphatic Care, especially those with NDIS. Many find comfort in petting her soft, luscious coat during their treatments, and Laura shares that Candy’s good behaviour and charm have made her a favourite. Clients eagerly look forward to seeing her on their next visit often asking where she is if she is not waiting for them.
Around the town of Marian, Candy is much like a local celebrity. Everyone knows her by name, and she’s even a regular at the school, where she joins Laura’s daughter for walks and makes appearances during show-and-tell. Her fan base grows daily.
For all her hard work, Candy lives a pampered life. Whether it’s playing dress-up, getting groomed, or lounging in her oversized pink princess bed, Candy is living in luxury, always ready to charm the next round of clients.
With Candy by your side, feel your worries fade away as you embrace the relaxing atmosphere of the clinic. Coupled with Laura’s compassionate care, qualified guidance and professional touch, this dynamic duo guarantees an experience that’s as comforting as it is transformative.

Located in one of Bowen's most picturesque bays, Horseshoe Bay Cafe is a vibrant beachside café where dogs are welcome to join their owners and enjoy their time in the spacious outdoor dining area. This furry-family-member welcome was initiated by the cafe’s animal-loving owner, Jilly Paddon. The inspiration for welcoming pooches of all shapes and sizes came from a desire to make sure the whole family is included, even the furriest members of the clan.
Popular with locals and a delightful discovery for tourists, Horseshoe Bay Cafe’s pet-friendly atmosphere allows patrons to enjoy a breakfast, coffee and cake, meal or drink alongside their precious pets while marveling at the expansive views of this stunning bay.

Founded in 2017, iScope has built a solid reputation for excellence in scoping, project management, structural repair, and welding qualification and training. While iScope’s dedicated team is key to their success, two special members truly make a fluffy impact: Pip and Alfie. These charming Staffordshire Bull Terrier and Bull Arab mixes have a remarkable gift for easing nerves, spreading smiles, and fostering a warm, welcoming atmosphere.
Pip and Alfie are the perfect pair. Alfie is protective, loyal, and a bit bossy, while Pip is gentle, loving, and unassuming. They were brought into the caring arms of the iScope team—Alfie was bred and purchased locally, while Pip was rescued from the Mackay RSPCA Facebook page. Resembling Alfie’s twin, iScope owners Rachel and Craig Evans couldn't resist her.
While iScope has a friendly and welcoming atmosphere already, the pups play a big role in greeting candidates undergoing weld testing. In an environment where individuals may feel nervous and anxious, the dogs help make people more relaxed, often promoting conversations about their own animals.
Due to the duo’s impact on customers, Rachel Evans said that returning clients are always excited to greet the dogs, “If the dogs aren't there, they’re always asking where they are!”
“The dogs enjoy all the pats they get and promote a more personal conversation between customers and staff,” Rachel said.
iScope’s workshop mascot, Alfie the dog, has even starred in a previous marketing campaign, featuring a fantastic photo of him on a forklift. This lovable pooch has an unusual obsession with lettuce—he’d devour an entire head if given the chance! When he’s not snacking, you can find him lounging at Rachel’s feet, content to stay close.
Pip, on the other hand, loves her bed, which is in the office; she hardly moves from it all day.

Known affectionately as the "King of Smiles”, Sunny regularly visits the PLQ office, where he greets each team member with a wag of his tail, a friendly lick, and a nudge for pats. He’s more than just a mascot; he's part of the team, bringing a sense of joy and connection that’s hard to match.
"We believe that having a furry companion like Sunny in the workplace has been key to fostering the wellbeing of our team," said the company’s director, Kelly Parker.
A bit of a local celebrity, Sunny has appeared in many of PLQ’s social media campaigns, but this marks his first feature in print—a milestone he’s sure to be wagging his tail about!
"Since we started in 2016, Sunny has grown right alongside us," Kelly said.
"He’s gone from lounging on case files in our small home office to overseeing our ever-growing team."
PLQ specialises in conveyancing, business and commercial transactions, as well as farming and property, alongside wills and estates. This creates a bustling atmosphere, but the presence of the "king of smiles" helps to ease the tension.
Sunny also approves of PLQ’s newest initiative—gift vouchers for wills. A thoughtful present for a milestone birthday or when your child welcomes a little one of their own, these vouchers offer the ultimate peace of mind.
"We have over 20 years' experience in Wills and Estates, conveyancing, property, commercial and business Law and we’re here to provide trusted representation every step of the way. We have PROVEN results, provide RELIABLE advice and have been TRUSTED by our clients to provide correct and practical advice” Kelly added.
Next time you visit Parker Law, prepare to be greeted by the King of Smiles himself, who’s always ready to brighten your day.

In a world where hearts and paws unite, Happy Paws Happy Hearts (HPHH) creates life-changing connections between rescue animals and people in the Mackay community. The program brings together individuals facing social isolation and shelter animals in need of companionship, fostering a bond that heals both sides.
Through unique sessions, participants build confidence, find purpose, form lasting friendships and enhance their wellbeing, while the animals receive the love, training and socialisation they need throughout their time in care. It's a symbiotic relationship where outcomes for the hearts result in hope and connection, and outcomes for the paws lead to happier, more adoptable animals.
For Susan Armstrong, HPHH Senior Program Trainer, helping others comes naturally, whether they have two legs or four.
“I get to work with animals every day, but also witness firsthand how they impact the lives of our participants.”
HPHH is a national not-for-profit organisation that addresses social isolation, not just for people but for animals as well. Their unique programs, based at rescue shelters like RSPCA Animal Care Centre, Mackay, focus on helping both vulnerable individuals and animals form meaningful connections. The animals get much-needed care and training, while participants—who range from people with a disability or mental health challenge, veterans and youth at risk—gain confidence, social skills, independence and a sense of purpose.
Susan loves seeing how participants transform over time, watching on as shy individuals gradually open up.
"It’s amazing to see participants realise their potential through working with the animals.”
“When someone masters a new skill, like training a dog, you can see that spark of accomplishment. They realise, ‘Yes, I can do this!’
“That sense of achievement is powerful—it’s about more than just learning to train animals; it’s about building self-worth and confidence," she said.
The program runs small, group sessions that are mutually beneficial for the people and the animals.
“The interaction helps them build friendships and a sense of community, and it’s heart-warming to see both animals and people thrive in such a safe, supportive space,” Susan said.
Happy Paws Happy Hearts Mackay programs have become a lifeline for many. Participants gain more than just companionship from the animals they work with—they acquire skills that improve their mental health and overall wellbeing along with vocational skills for transitions into employment or study. Each session offers a chance for growth, for both the people involved and the animals in care.
The impact of HPHH is clear: happier, more socialised animals ready for adoption and more confident, empowered people ready to find their unique purpose and take on new journeys. It’s a win-win for everyone involved.
Mackay sessions run Monday through Friday with morning and afternoon programs available. If you are interested or know of someone who would benefit from an HPHH program, visit the website to find out more at www.hphhfoundation.org.
