Forging a Greener Future

The Raw Metal Corp Revolution in Recycling

In a world where sustainability is more than just a buzzword, Raw Metal Corp has been a trailblazer in transforming the metal recycling landscape. Founded in 2014 by Todd Wanless, the company has not only grown into one of Queensland's largest scrap metal recyclers but has also become a symbol of environmental stewardship and innovative recycling practices. With a commitment to reducing landfill waste and repurposing valuable materials, Raw Metal Corp is leading the charge in an industry that is both challenging and essential for our planet’s future.

A Shift in Social Consciousness

"Recycling is a phenomenon that has been changing the social landscape over the last 10 years, particularly the last five," says Brett Crosby, General Manager of Raw Metal Corp.

"The advent of bottle recycling has revitalised the concept of recycling, showing the positive impact it has and the increased relevance of it now that the world is so focused on climate change and our contribution to its impact."

Todd Wanless, Founder and Managing Director said that Raw Metal Corp is at the forefront of developing new methods and ways of recycling.

“This enables our business to recycle more efficiently to get the best yield from recyclable materials, thereby reducing the need for mining virgin materials,” he said.

“Along with repurposing and reusing, recycling plays a very important part in the environmental and social governance areas that have proven to be so important for businesses of all sizes and to the community as a whole."

Raw Metal Corp’s Growing Footprint

Since its inception, Raw Metal Corp has continuously expanded its operations, recently focusing on its Mackay yard, which opened three years ago.

"The Mackay yard continues to grow as we apply the same ‘We Care’ attitude to the business and focus on our customers,” Brett said.

“Our customer base has expanded from the initial Paget area with a focus to now covering mines, major demolition, and regional councils with scrap metal recovery. Everyone’s recycling!"

A significant milestone in their growth was the installation of the only hammer mill shredder in North Queensland, a game-changer for metal recycling in the region.

"No longer do we need to transport material all the way back to Brisbane. We can process it right here in our Paget yard and export it out of Mackay Harbour to steel mills around the world," says Todd.

Customer interaction is not just a task; it’s a core value.

Brett said, "Our customer interaction is our key focus.”

“We are a small family business, and we like to be involved in our customers' businesses to see how better we can serve them."

This personal touch extends across all their operations, from dealing with large industrial customers to helping residential clients clear out a few kilos of scrap metal.

Wade Ruffin, Business Development Manager, adds, "We care about how we interact with our customers, the impression each interaction has on them, and whether this interaction is good enough for referral.”

“We strive to treat all our customers the same way, whether they are large industrial clients or residential customers with a few kilos of scrap metal.

“Small pieces of scrap metal add up, and it all helps the environment."

Metal Markets and Machinery

Raw Metal Corp’s success is not just due to its customer service; it’s also about the advanced machinery and strategic logistics that keep the wheels turning.

"We’ve completed five direct ship exports from our Mackay yard with shiploads ranging from 12,000 to 17,000 tonnes of steel," Wade explains.

"The organisation of ship loading is quite a feat, with the ever-changing timelines of ship availability, coordinating 15 trucks and bins, and managing the weather. These shiploads run for 24 hours over three to four days and require precise coordination across the business."

The company’s investments in machinery, such as the Sennebogen machines and Caterpillar excavators, ensure that they can efficiently process both ferrous and non-ferrous metals, preventing them from ending up in landfills. This not only aligns with their environmental goals but also supports their growing business.

“We installed the only hammer mill shredder in North Queensland a couple of years ago and it is proving a game changer for metal recycling in North Queensland,” Wade added.

As well as mining, Raw Metal specialise in farm clean-ups.

“We are continually doing farm clean-ups for crop, cattle and sugar cane farmers from Grafton in Northern New South Wales to the North at Bowen and West to Charters Towers,” Wade explained.

“To be able to do the farm cleanups we need a minimum of tipper trailer loads of scrap metal to offset the machinery that we have to take to site. We take a 21-tonne excavator with a grab, semi-trailer tipper bin, and the machine has to be floated to and from the site.”

Beyond the Yard

The team at Raw Metal Corp isn't just about business; they bring a wealth of personal experience and dedication to their roles with an emphasis on giving team members pathways for progression.

"One of my favourite moments was hiring a new staff member who had a tough start in life,” Wade shared.

“Over 3.5 years, he grew into his role, set and achieved small goals, and taught me as much as I taught him. His enthusiasm and hard work were truly inspiring."

Beyond his professional commitments, Wade is known for his love of the great outdoors. Whether it's fishing, camping, or simply enjoying a quiet moment by the water, he finds his peace in nature, often using these moments to recharge and stay grounded.

Brett Crosby also reflects on his 10 years with Raw Metal Corp, particularly the pride he takes in the company’s Paget yard.

"Scrap yards around the world are historically dirty and not family-friendly,” he said.

“When Todd purchased the lot in Paget, we developed it specifically for a scrap yard.

“I project-managed the construction and design, and we all pride ourselves on how clean it is.

“Everyone that comes into the yard comments on it, and I’m very proud of the team, as they treat it like it’s their own."

Enjoying a cold beer and spending time with his family are simple pleasures in life Brett looks forward to outside of work. He spends weekends riding his cruiser and when he’s not chasing horizons in Queensland, he likes to explore other destinations across the globe.

Todd is passionate about fitness and staying active. When he's not busy with work, you'll likely find him hitting the gym. His dedication to health and wellness is something he takes seriously, inspiring those around him to lead an active lifestyle.

What’s Next for Raw Metal Corp?

As Raw Metal Corp continues to grow, the team remains focused on innovation and expansion.

"We have massive plans coming up in the yard at Paget and in Wacol, Brisbane," Brett said.

"We continue to invest heavily in the business to ensure our processing and material handling is world-class. Attending metal recycling conferences around the world keeps us abreast of the constantly changing recycling technology,” Todd added.

As they continue to expand and refine their operations, one thing remains clear: Raw Metal Corp is not just a team recycling metal; they are forging a greener future for Queensland and beyond.

From Mine Site To Building Site

With Josh Clark From Earth Architectures & Performance Training Australia

After spending two and half decades in mining then transitioning into the civil world, Josh Clark at Earth Architectures and Performance Training Australia knows excavators very well.

Josh grew up in the small mining town of Moranbah in Central Queensland. His father was a coal miner, while his mother was a teacher. After working up and down the east coast in various roles, at 22 Josh decided that mining was the career path he wished to follow.

Josh began his career driving a truck and gradually moved through various roles before becoming an excavator operator. He fondly remembers the moment he realised he wanted to pursue this path. While working on a civil residential site at the age of 17 in the peak of summer he was labouring intensely in a trench on a shovel when he looked up and saw someone sitting in an excavator, casually smoking a cigarette and blaring music. At that moment, he thought to himself, “that’s what I want to be when I grow up!”

Josh soon found out that the job of an excavator operator wasn't quite as simple as that and he loved the challenges it brought, deciding to make it his full-time profession. Now with two businesses, ran solely by himself Josh provides civil excavation, as well as excavator proficiency training for mining companies.

“When I look back at it now excavators have made my career,” Josh explained.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Josh worked full-time in the mining industry, conducting specialist training for operators to enhance their production output. However, the onset of the pandemic and subsequent social distancing restrictions unfortunately interfered with his work in the mines. In response to these challenges, Josh decided to start his own business in 2019, Earth Architectures. He invested in several excavators and shifted his focus to localised civil projects. This new business now handles various tasks, including residential and industrial development, stone and rock wall construction, landscaping, bridge abutments, road building, creek crossings, and pipeline projects.

Since restrictions have lifted Josh now conducts periodical training in the mines again. Josh personalises this training depending on the workforce and its size. How many crew members and machines will usually determine how long he spends on your site, but typically he will spend two to four months giving specialised and seamless training.

Josh prides himself on his ability to greatly increase the client's production output through small technique adjustments to operators alongside ensuring their upmost safety. “It’s actually quite simple, refine movements and stop doing the things you don’t need to do,” and he teaches his streamlined approach with operators in excavators of up to 700-tonne machines, which are very big and slow compared to the smaller machines he uses in his civil jobs.

Josh differentiated between his civil work and training work in the mines:

“With the smaller machines in the civil world, you can do a lot of different things quicker, but when you get a 700-tonne machine, they're very big and very slow, so trying to do the same manoeuvres is quite costly, so it's about reducing the things you don’t need to do.”

“Companies can spend up to $20 million on a machine, so if they aren’t getting the production required, I can teach long term improvement techniques to operators to ensure they do.”

“Small technique adjustments can produce huge gains.”

“The metrics involved and the dollar value attached to those metrics are mind blowing.”

On the other hand, for Josh’s civil work, he uses a 20-tonne excavator, a 5-tonne excavator, a truck and a bobcat, which are ideal for the smaller-scale projects he handles at Earth Architectures.

Josh’s expertise and longevity of career is what sets him apart from the rest. Not only has Josh been in the excavation game for 27 years, but his profession has also taken him to interesting places all over Australia, New Zealand and Africa, such as Guinea where he worked on the World's Biggest Iron Ore project training nationals.

Whether you require training for your staff in the mines, or smaller-scale civil excavation projects, Josh has a world of experience to offer and is passionate about helping newer to industry operators learn decades of experience.

Steering Success in Mackay's Dynamic Market

Robyn Faa Real Estate

In the heart of Mackay’s flourishing real estate market, where tropical allure meets urban convenience, Robyn Faa Real Estate takes centre stage with unmatched proficiency. As the property market reaches new heights, this boutique agency, led by the seasoned and dedicated Robyn Faa, stands ready to guide buyers and sellers through the exhilarating process of property transactions.

Robyn's insights highlight the urgency for buyers to act swiftly.

“The current market is moving very fast, and it is very much a seller’s market,” Robyn explained.

“For buyers to be successful, they need to be very prepared and organised by having their finances pre-approved and ready to go! They also need to be very decisive and when they find their ideal home, jump on it.

“I urge buyers not to be intimidated by multiple offers, you’ve got to be in it to win it, so place an offer where you see value and then be prepared to walk away.”

In Mackay's hot market, being prepared is more than half the battle; it’s the key to unlocking your dream home.

“For first home buyers or for parents guiding their adult children, the best advice I can offer is to make an appointment with a bank or broker about 12 months prior to purchasing.”

Sellers, on the other hand, are basking in the glow of high demand, and Robyn explains how minimal effort can net higher returns.

“A neat, clean, tidy home can reward them with a much higher sale price, compared to a messy or dirty property. A coat of paint is relatively inexpensive; pruning and weeding costs your time; a few weekend working bees can soothe a buyer’s tendency to start ‘looking for problems.’”

At Robyn Faa Real Estate, the personalised touch is paramount.

“Clients are not a number, but valued patrons, who are treated with personalised service as they talk directly to me and are not fobbed off to another department or assistant.”

This bespoke approach ensures every client receives tailored advice and support from initial consultation to final settlement.

“My marketing campaign is as inexpensive as I can make it, I make zero profit on these so I’m not ‘ripping them off’ with flashy bells and whistles that are largely unnecessary. I customize every campaign to what the seller wants, and I do not force sellers into staging their properties.”

Robyn’s deep local knowledge is a treasure trove for her clients.

“Mackay is beautiful in every suburb and different locations speak to different buyers.

“Our Northern Beaches are very popular with interstate buyers; investors want close to CBD and middle socio-economic bracket; whereas families are looking for safe neighbourhoods within their desired school catchment areas.”

This nuanced understanding of Mackay’s diverse appeal helps clients find the perfect match for their needs.

Balancing professional success with personal resilience, Robyn has continued to thrive even after the loss of her husband in 2019. Raising her four children while running her business, she has become a paragon of strength and dedication. Her boutique agency isn’t just a real estate office; it’s a family, offering a level of care and commitment that’s hard to find elsewhere.

Robyn’s extensive experience, client-focused approach, and deep local knowledge make her the ideal choice for anyone looking to buy or sell in Mackay.

In a market that's always shifting, Robyn Faa Real Estate remains the steadfast compass guiding clients to their dream homes. Robyn isn’t just navigating Mackay’s vibrant property market; she’s steering it towards success.

Find Your Freedom

With Kath Barker From Compass Realty

Sometimes less really is more, and this is the case with Kath Barker from Compass Realty Whitsundays, an independent one-woman agency that believes in taking on less clients to deliver an even more personalised service. Buying or selling a home is one of the biggest and most personally significant decisions you will ever make in your life and Kath understands the value of providing a meaningful experience to all her clients.

A returning resident of the Whitsundays, Kath spent her youth in the region with her father who brought a sailing yacht from New Zealand to Australia in the early 1980’s. As a teenager, she spent many happy years living with her dad on the boat, offering sailing tours and hosting visitors for adventures around the islands.

Eager to travel and pursue a more corporate career Kath eventually moved to Sydney where she had her two children, before moving to the Gold Coast to be closer to family. It is here that she embarked on her career in the housing industry, only initially it was in the construction sector where she operated a construction business alongside her husband for the past 20 years. During this time, the pair oversaw countless commercial projects including Jupiter’s Casino and the Gold Coast Light Rail. They employed a workforce of 40 and Kath’s role was largely in Business Development.

With her own experience in buying, selling, developing and investing, Kath knows how stressful the process can be, and supports her clients every step of the way.

“Having 20 years in building and construction comes in very handy in real estate,” commented Kath.

“Particularly when buyers are doing their Building and Pest Inspections and I can assure them not to panic, I also have an in-depth understanding of the building process which is a great foundation.”

With all this industry experience coupled with a vibrant, warm and engaging personality, friends often commented that she would be a natural real estate agent, but it took several years for Kath to follow this path. One friend in particular offered her a job and when Kath arrived in the office one day and informed her that she now had her real estate licence and was ready to start, “she nearly fell off her chair!”.

That was five years ago, and Kath has never looked back, as passionate about her career as when she first started, only these days she is doing it with the flexibility and freedom of working in her own business. Eternally grateful for the mentorship of her friend when she first started in real estate and the experience a larger agency gave her, Kath is now proud to have her own business, Compass Realty, which works within the @realty umbrella and provides all the backend services such as compliance and legislation.

This transition to independence came hand in hand with a bigger move, one that saw Kath and her husband return to the Whitsundays. The couple visited the region to celebrate a milestone birthday, and quickly realised they were destined to leave the fast-paced, high-pressure environment of the Gold Coast behind to pursue a sea change which took them back to a place where Kath has always felt at home.

These two decisions allowed Kath to finally become the person and the real estate agent she has always wanted to be.

“My focus now is to take on a lot less clients and deliver a high-end customer experience - I love supporting people through the property process whether they are buying or selling,” expressed Kath.

“I love seeing the joy on people’s faces when they’ve got that sale price or are holding the keys to the first, or even their 10th house, in their hands.”

When she steps away from the desk, Kath can be found out on the water sailing with her husband or, more recently, exploring the country in their new caravan.

Robyn Agius

Area Specialist

Finding herself up to her elbows in decades of cockroach poo might not be everyone’s idea of fun, but for Robyn Agius, it’s all part of her passion for property. With a talent for recognising hidden gems in both old and new homes, Robyn brings humour, dedication, and unparalleled professionalism to her role as a real estate agent and business owner with Area Specialist.

Currently, her passion project is renovating an old building in the Pioneer Valley. Once complete, it will be a blend of residential and commercial, with a nod to its heritage.

"Abandoned buildings intrigue me," Robyn admits.

"It’s such a shame to see them empty and deteriorating at a time when we have a housing crisis.

“It’s interesting to discover the construction styles of decades ago, and I’m excited to see the building completed and already looking out for my next project."

Robyn’s efficiency and expertise make her a standout in the real estate industry. Her ability to see the potential in any property ensures that her clients receive the best possible advice.

"The best time to sell is when you are ready!" she says.

“At the moment there is an increase in buyers' agents and investor interest in our region.

"Integrity matters massively in everything I do, and I'm not one to compromise that for anything or anyone."

Having raised her family in the Pioneer Valley, Robyn’s expertise in this area is unparalleled, and the region holds a special place in her heart.

“The view is spectacular as you head up the range, the temperature drops and the hills of Eungella remind me of our family farm in New Zealand."

Robyn’s connection to the community is evident in her Gratuity Referral Program, which she launched this year.

"I donate $1000 of my earnings from every property sale to a local school or charity," she says.

"If the vendors have a charity close to their heart, I am happy to be guided by them.

“Otherwise, the donation goes to a school near the property that was sold, the Australian Street Aid Project, Royal Flying Doctor Service, or Life Impact Church, who are generous supporters of our community.”

Sandy Quinn

Sandy Coast Furniture & Homewares

Imagine stepping into a sanctuary where the serene essence of a beachside retreat ignites the senses. The delicate scent of Flower Box diffusers blends with the visual beauty of coastal chic decor, instantly transporting you to a world of relaxed elegance.

This is Sandy Coast Furniture & Homewares, a haven for those seeking to infuse their homes with the tranquil vibes of the Northern Beaches lifestyle. Established in September 2021 by Sandy Quinn, this shop has quickly become a beloved destination in Mackay for furniture and homewares that embody a relaxed yet sophisticated coastal aesthetic.

Sandy has a love for creating spaces that reflect the beauty of the coast.

“We offer unique items here, so there are many items you can't find anywhere else in Mackay or the Whitsundays,” Sandy explains. The shop boasts a stunning variety of furniture, décor and other delights to be discovered, each carefully selected to ensure that visitors find pieces they love.

The showroom, spacious and always evolving, is filled with treasures that can transform any home. From natural tones perfect for a boho vibe to vibrant bursts of colour, Sandy Coast caters to diverse tastes. Antique pieces of furniture from Asian countries sit beside handmade furniture, using elm reclaimed from snowy parts of China and Mongolia. Another advantage of shopping at Sandy Coast is the opportunity to purchase items that are available now from the floor or storerooms.

“It’s not necessarily about having to do a complete refurnish if your home décor is feeling tired,” Sandy advises.

“Sometimes all it takes is one or two new signature items to give a room a fresh new feeling.”

The friendly and knowledgeable staff at Sandy Coast enhance the shopping experience, offering assistance in finding the perfect piece or sourcing it if it’s not in stock. This personalised service, coupled with the absence of hefty delivery fees, makes shopping at Sandy Coast not only enjoyable but also practical.

“We are that place that people love to go for those ‘hard-to-shop-for’ people. We have such diversity for gifts from flameless candles to some select pieces of coastal fashion as well as jewellery,” Sandy explained.

“We also offer complementary gift-wrapping so you can call in on the way to an event and walk out with your gift sorted!”

Sandy's dedication to her business and her community is evident in every aspect of the shop.

“I have about 100 different suppliers, many items are one-off pieces, and we have some unique items made locally,” she shares. The store is always filled with exciting finds, from handcrafted purses to local photography by Adam Lloyd Jones.

“It’s a destination for many people, the opportunity to take a relaxing drive to the Northern Beaches, grab a coffee and stroll our showroom to see what’s new.”

With her five children now grown, Sandy has the time to dedicate to her business which has been a dream of hers for years, however, family is still at the heart of all she does.

“We have five children; one in Cairns, two in Brisbane, and two here,” she says with a smile.

"I'm so proud of all of them, following their passions and living their lives as wonderful, kind people."

The family took a memorable trip to Vietnam and Cambodia with two other local families years ago when the youngest were 8-year-olds.

“Vietnam was very go-go-go because we had a full itinerary across many destinations with wonderful experiences, but Cambodia gave us that relaxing time where we visited temples and enjoyed relaxing family time.”

Whether you’re looking for a statement piece or the perfect gift, Sandy Coast is the place to find something new to love.

With Creative Edge Cabinetry

A family-owned business dedicated to building dream interiors showcases how you can get the aesthetic of a new build through a renovation.

Specialising in kitchens, bathrooms, and all custom cabinetry needs, Creative Edge Cabinetry caters to both the residential and commercial sectors, bringing creativity, precision, and passion to every project.

Before:

This family kitchen was a relic of a bygone era, a space defined by faded and dated decor that clashed with its true potential. The mismatched colours of the cabinetry and countertops created visual chaos. The lack of practical space for food preparation made cooking a challenge and the breakfast bar was an anti-social eyesore that further fragmented the kitchen.

After:

The once outdated and cluttered space has been transformed into a modern haven, characterised by clean white lines and elegant simplicity. The new kitchen boasts ample bench space, perfect for everyday meals and elaborate culinary creations, plus an open inviting area that encourages family gatherings and social interaction.

One of the standout features of the new design is the clever integration of storage solutions. The team at Creative Edge Cabinetry ensured that every inch of space was utilised efficiently, incorporating custom cabinetry to keep clutter at bay. The result is a kitchen that feels much larger and more open than its predecessor.
