Meet iScope’s Furry Team Members Bringing Joy to the Workplace

While iScope’s dedicated team is key to their success, two special members truly make a fluffy impact: Pip and Alfie. These charming Staffordshire Bull Terrier and Bull Arab mixes have a remarkable gift for easing nerves, spreading smiles, and fostering a warm, welcoming atmosphere.

Pip and Alfie are the perfect pair. Alfie is protective, loyal, and a bit bossy, while Pip is gentle, loving, and unassuming. They were brought into the caring arms of the iScope team—Alfie was bred and purchased locally, while Pip was rescued from the Mackay RSPCA Facebook page. Resembling Alfie’s twin, iScope owners Rachel and Craig Evans couldn't resist her.

While iScope has a friendly and welcoming atmosphere already, the pups play a big role in greeting candidates undergoing weld testing. In an environment where individuals may feel nervous and anxious, the dogs help make people more relaxed, often promoting conversations about their own animals.

Due to the duo’s impact on customers, Rachel Evans said that returning clients are always excited to greet the dogs, “If the dogs aren't there, they’re always asking where they are!”

“The dogs enjoy all the pats they get and promote a more personal conversation between customers and staff,” Rachel said.

iScope’s workshop mascot, Alfie the dog, has even starred in a previous marketing campaign, featuring a fantastic photo of him on a forklift. This lovable pooch has an unusual obsession with lettuce—he’d devour an entire head if given the chance! When he’s not snacking, you can find him lounging at Rachel’s feet, content to stay close.

The program brings together individuals facing social isolation and shelter animals in need of companionship, fostering a bond that heals both sides.

Through unique sessions, participants build confidence, find purpose, form lasting friendships and enhance their wellbeing, while the animals receive the love, training and socialisation they need throughout their time in care. It's a symbiotic relationship where outcomes for the hearts result in hope and connection, and outcomes for the paws lead to happier, more adoptable animals.

For Susan Armstrong, HPHH Senior Program Trainer, helping others comes naturally, whether they have two legs or four.

“I get to work with animals every day, but also witness firsthand how they impact the lives of our participants.”

HPHH is a national not-for-profit organisation that addresses social isolation, not just for people but for animals as well. Their unique programs, based at rescue shelters like RSPCA Animal Care Centre, Mackay, focus on helping both vulnerable individuals and animals form meaningful connections. The animals get much-needed care and training, while participants—who range from people with a disability or mental health challenge, veterans and youth at risk—gain confidence, social skills, independence and a sense of purpose.

Susan loves seeing how participants transform over time, watching on as shy individuals gradually open up.

"It’s amazing to see participants realise their potential through working with the animals.”

“When someone masters a new skill, like training a dog, you can see that spark of accomplishment. They realise, ‘Yes, I can do this!’

“That sense of achievement is powerful—it’s about more than just learning to train animals; it’s about building self-worth and confidence," she said.

The program runs small, group sessions that are mutually beneficial for the people and the animals.

“The interaction helps them build friendships and a sense of community, and it’s heart-warming to see both animals and people thrive in such a safe, supportive space,” Susan said.

Happy Paws Happy Hearts Mackay programs have become a lifeline for many. Participants gain more than just companionship from the animals they work with—they acquire skills that improve their mental health and overall wellbeing along with vocational skills for transitions into employment or study. Each session offers a chance for growth, for both the people involved and the animals in care.

The impact of HPHH is clear: happier, more socialised animals ready for adoption and more confident, empowered people ready to find their unique purpose and take on new journeys. It’s a win-win for everyone involved.

As the season to be jolly approaches, it’s important to remember the four-legged friends who are often neglected by their families and forced to spend majority of their days in the confined walls of a boarding pen.

Whilst this reality is heartbreaking, it is one that is very real, and true.

Thankfully organisations such as Mackay Pet Rescue Incorporated (MPRI) open up their hearts and their homes to accommodate local animals in need, with a range of trained foster carers and volunteers who dedicate their time to make a paw-print sized difference in the lives of those most vulnerable.

Mackay Pet Rescue Inc. is powered by the efforts of over 45 dedicated volunteers and foster carers, including President Zanika Breed, Vice President Ros Lowry, Secretary Janet Ambrose, and Treasurer Renae Gordon. Among these heroes are Robyn Van Rooyan and Leisa Barnett, who also played a crucial role in the establishment of MPRI.

From dogs to cats, silkies to ducks, and even the occasional ‘bin chicken’ or baby crocodile (yes you read that right), the MPRI team is constantly called upon by locals, swiftly attending the scene to save a helpless animal in despair.

They are the silent heroes within the region, known for their fast approach and caring nature, offering a service that is often overlooked and underappreciated.

Janet Ambrose, Secretary of MPRI, shed light on the immense dedication involved in the frontline work of rescuing animals, especially the heartbreaking discovery of very sick animals. Many of these rescues require long-term care to nurse them back to health.

"There’s a tremendous amount of work that goes into this,” Janet said. “We’re all unpaid volunteers juggling regular jobs, families and other responsibilities. We foster in our own homes and rely heavily on community support.

“The high cost of living and rental crisis is really impacting us. People are dumping animals or leaving them behind when they move, and animals are coming into care in pitiful conditions, often withered and close to death."

With the closure of nearby rescues due to a lack of support, MPRI's catchment area has expanded significantly, now covering regions from the Pioneer Valley to Bowen, Moranbah, and Emerald.

To continue their life-saving work, MPRI relies heavily on community donations and government grants - and they’re in need of your support. By building awareness of the real challenges in pet rescue, they hope to inspire businesses, especially those in the mining sector, to sponsor their mission.

“We are constantly rescuing mother cats and kittens from mining camps,” said Janet, “Our carers go out at night with torches, traps, trail cameras and food to catch them… but we are in need of more funding and sponsorship.”

Janet also highlighted the importance of the cat desexing program funded by a $32,000 Gambling Community Benefit Fund. This program will desex 100 cats, preventing an estimated 2,400 kittens from being born next year and reducing the number of animals in need of rescue.

“We’re always looking for foster carers and volunteers in any capacity,” Janet added. “We provide all the supplies and training - people just need to bring their love and willingness to help.”

In future, the rescue team aims to fund a sanctuary for elderly or homeless cats and dogs, specifically helping those whose owners have passed away, those without homes, or when all foster carers reach full capacity.

Meet Layla

A Mini Fox Terrier, Layla is a senior dog, but you would never know it given her adventurous spirit and sweet quiet nature. With a love of travelling this loveable pooch is 10 years young and is at her best when sitting with her family in the RV, exploring new terrain and getting out on the open road. A loyal and trustworthy dog, Layla stays close to her humans at all times and her good behaviour is often met with reward when she is given her favourite treat; a tasty milk stick.

Meet Lucy

Lucy is a Mini Fox Terrier, and at the ripe old age of 14, Lucy loves nothing more than a well-deserved sleep. Pet parents Pat and Tracy both head up the accounts department and Pat himself has been with Ocean Rafting for seventeen years – all of Lucy’s life. Lucy will eat anything and loves alerting her pawrents when its treat time. She is a fantastic companion, and loves to spend time with her family. Despite being a tired girl now, Lucy joined the family as a bundle of fun and happiness in crate despite her delayed travels.

Meet Peanut

If you like running and zooming, Peanut is your kind of girl. Peanut is a happy, springy and bouncy six-month-old Italian Greyhound, who is exceptionally loving and intelligent and is sure to give you a run for your money in a race. Peanut belongs to Jan, owner of Ocean Rafting since 2001, and likes to give her quite the workout. Peanut loves a training treat as she is still a puppy. The family love making new memories with their lively pup, and while Peanut isn't running around, she definitely enjoys the compawny of her loving parents.

Meet Roofus and Jethro

Meet Roofus and Jethro, an adorable duo who love walks on Whitsunday Beaches (Don’t we all!). Jethro, an 11-year-old Husky owned by Benny, Eco Host and Master Reef Guide at Ocean Rafting and Ocean Safari, is known for his gentle nature and striking mismatched eyes. His energetic younger brother, Roofus, a 4-year-old Cavapoochon, eagerly awaits his owner Nathan, Sales Captain of Ocean Rafting and Ocean Safari. Roofus impresses with tricks like dancing, high fives and paw shakes! He celebrated his first birthday at a park with friends (dogs), complete with doggy cake and doggy bag! Benny’s favourite memory of Jethro was when he flew him to Airlie Beach to be by his side from when he moved from Kangaroo Island; Benny had never seen him so excited when they reunited.

Meet Boots

Forget treats—Frisbees are what lovable Boots can't resist! Known as the "F word" in her household, this 3-year-old Kelpie has boundless energy. Her pet parents, Kerr, the Operations Manager at Ocean Rafting, and Jas, the Office Manager, share a deep bond with her. While Frisbees may be her favourite, Boots also loves mountain biking with them to burn off energy. She's a champion cuddler, expertly squeezing into any couch spot. Despite being deemed "too gentle" for a working dog, her sweet nature makes her irresistible. Her humans favourite memories of her are bike rides, surf outings, dinner reservations and her blissful snoozes on the way home.

Meet Bella

The small but very loving Bella is a 3.5-year-old mix of Kelpie, Jack Russell, and Dingo. She belongs to Cole, General Manager and Clem, Project Manager for Ocean Rafting and Ocean Safari. Bella has a particular fondness for kangaroo meat and adores playing ball on the beach with her humans! As a spirited trail dog, she loves to run alongside the Cole and Clem during their mountain biking adventures. One of their favourite memories with Bella is their time swimming together at a local swimming hole in Cape Tribulation.

Almost three decades have passed since Ocean Rafting brought a splash of gold to the turquoise Whitsundays waters. Ocean Rafting has surpassed 28 wonderful years of family-run and locally loved business, and is ready to keep serving the Whitsunday Tourism Industry for another.

Ocean Rafting marked its 28th anniversary in style at the Tourism Awards in October, securing a gold medal in the ‘Major Tour & Transport’ category and silver in ‘Adventure Tourism.’ The team was also honoured as Whitsunday’s favourite tourism experience in the consumer-voted ‘People’s Choice Award Experience.’ These impressive wins led to their induction into the Hall of Fame, recognising three consecutive years of gold in the “Major Tour & Transport” category and three years as the “People’s Choice Award Experience.”

Ocean Rafting is proudly owned by Peter and Jan Claxton, who took over the business in 2001 when it featured just two vessels, "Jammin'" and "Wild Thing." After some renovations, both boats are still part of the fleet today. Under Peter and Jan's leadership, Ocean Rafting has blossomed into a thriving enterprise.

What sets Ocean Rafting apart is its rich family heritage, with three generations actively involved in the business. Nathan Fleming, who has spent 13 years at Ocean Rafting, also shares a deep-rooted connection with the family behind it. His journey began in Hervey Bay, where he first met Jan and Peter—Jan approached him at his job, promoting the business alongside her two children, who now serve as operations managers. Nathan describes Jan and Peter as family, fully embracing their family-oriented approach. The close-knit atmosphere is further strengthened by Jan’s mother, who serves as the head accountant, and her sister, also an accountant, reinforcing the strong familial bonds that define Ocean Rafting.

“At Ocean Rafting, we are lucky to have become a three-generational business over the last twenty-eight years,” said Jan.

“Being family-owned and operated allows us to be agile and efficient when making on-the-go decisions. This translates to our team feeling empowered and responsible for their choices, ideas, and actions. Some of the Rafting team have been with us for a long time, and now their youngsters have joined us, completing the Rafting family recipe.”

Since the business was acquired in 2001, it has expanded from two boats to eight, along with adding planes for scenic flights over the Whitsundays. These breathtaking flights, showcasing the beauty of the Great Barrier Reef and the Whitsunday’s iconic Heart Reef, were introduced by Ocean Rafting seven years ago.

The concept of combining planes with ocean rafting was inspired by Peter, who transitioned from aviation to boating. This innovative approach has led to the creation of the Fly Raft package, which has quickly become one of Ocean Rafting’s best-sellers. This unique offering seamlessly integrates the thrill of flight with the adventure of rafting, providing an unforgettable experience for their customers.

Mater Mothers' Private Mackay midwife Sarah Fordyce has journeyed from aspiring accountant to devoted midwife and Nurse Unit Manager, embodying the values of care, compassion, and leadership that define Mater. Recently recognised with the Mater Early Career Excellence Award, Sarah’s path is marked by resilience and dedication, proving that a passion for people can forge unexpected careers.

After a chance conversation with a midwife in high school, Sarah felt a powerful calling to healthcare, even as she initially pursued a degree and Master's in accounting.

“I decided that midwifery was my calling,” Sarah said.

“After completing one year as a Registered Midwife (RM), although I loved the profession, I still had the feeling that I should have completed my accounting.”

Sarah worked as a RM while completing a Master of Professional Accounting and said although her career trajectory had not been straightforward, she found a profession where both her passion for midwifery and management aligned.

“My accounting experience was in risk management and is utilised on a daily basis in my role as Nurse Unit Manager,” she said.

At Mater Mothers' Private Mackay, Sarah leads a team providing exceptional care, aided by Mater’s status as Queensland’s referral centre for babies with heart conditions. With facilities like the 24/7 Pregnancy Assessment Centre, serving expectant mothers from six weeks onward, and the Neonatal Critical Care Unit (NCCU) – which treats over 2,000 babies annually – Mater stands as a leader in maternal and fetal medicine.

Through Teladoc, Sarah and her team can connect with the NCCU’s expert neonatology team in South-East Queensland, delivering cutting-edge care to some of the region’s most vulnerable patients.

“Being a part of a large healthcare organisation means that we have access to world-class specialists and nursing staff, and innovative research and education,” Sarah says.

While Sarah and her team watch closely over those precious first breaths, there is another team dedicated to ensuring that a person’s last steps are embraced with compassion, care and comfort.

Nurses like Miechelle Williams and the late Ailsa Millewski embody this commitment, bringing warmth and empathy to every patient and family they support—a legacy of care that resonates deeply within the unit.

It has been a year since nurse Ailsa Millewski passed away peacefully in the Mater palliative care unit where she once worked, but the legacy of her care has not faded.

Ailsa joined Mater Private Hospital Mackay in 2010, working in the maternity team and coordinating the hospital’s Health Hearing Program. She made a positive impact on her patients and colleagues from the very beginning.

“People said that when Ailsa smiled, it wasn’t just a smile. She smiled with her whole face,” her husband Gary Millewski recalled.

“She loved working with the babies and young children.”

Ailsa worked across many areas of the hospital, but felt a special draw to the Palliative Care Unit on St Catherine’s ward. The unit has grown over the past 30 years to provide holistic support to patients experiencing lifelimiting illness. Ailsa soon became close friends with fellow Palliative Care Nurse, Miechelle Williams, who said she had ‘fallen into’ this demanding and specialised field of nursing.

“I was still relatively new to Mackay when I met Ailsa. From the get go, I just thought, ‘This is an extremely lovely person.’ You knew if she was on shift with you, it wouldn’t feel like work.”

Miechelle and Ailsa grew closer when Ailsa was part of the nursing team who cared for Miechelle’s husband Warren when he was in Palliative Care Unit.

Warren passed in 2018.

“It was only two and a half years from the time of my husband’s diagnosis to his passing,” Miechelle said.

“In that time, everything about my kids’ lives was disrupted – but once he was in Palliative Care here at Mater, Ailsa just brought that extra little bit of compassion.”

Last year roles were reversed when Ailsa was admitted as a patient in Mater’s Palliative Care Unit.

“Ailsa had fond memories working with Miechelle right up until she took ill – she first showed symptoms that something was wrong in 2021,” Gary said.

“She was always an amazing cook so the first I noticed something was wrong was one night when she was cooking a chicken stir-fry and she came out to me and said ‘Gary, I don’t know what I’m supposed to do.’

“It took until the end of the year to work out that Ailsa had developed a tumour in her adrenal glands which we had removed in Townsville – but a biopsy and PET scan revealed it was already a stage 3 carcinoma and had spread to her spine.

“She opted not to have chemo and wanted to pass away at home.

“I cared for her at home, bought all the equipment, but didn’t want to be the one to tell her that it was getting too much for me.

“She could see though. I just couldn’t do that last bit – our GP had been doing home visits and we went into him one day. He visited her and she said to him, ‘I think I’ll have to go across the road to the Mater.’

“He said, ‘I guess you’ll want the penthouse,’ and she said, ‘Yes, room 116.’

“The first time I laid eyes on Ailsa was 12 September 1984.

“On 12 September 2023, she was admitted to Palliative Care.”

Miechelle cared for Ailsa throughout her admission.

“Caring for Ailsa at the end was difficult because this was a colleague I had worked with, but it was also such a beautiful experience to be able to support her and her family like she had done for me and my family previously,” Miechelle said.

“The night of her passing, Gary and their daughter were both there and it all just felt like it happened at the right time for everyone.”

“Miechelle didn’t have to say anything in those final moments, just her presence there with us was fantastic,” Gary said.

“Ailsa’s wish was that she didn’t want anyone else to be with her when she passed, only me – and it turned out that, at five to two in the morning, our daughters were dozing off to sleep, I was holding Ailsa’s hand, and I just said, ‘I think she’s taken her last breath.’

“She had - and it was just the two of us.”

Gary shared Miechelle’s appreciation for the staff, saying Ailsa was provided with the same care she had given to countless other patients over the years.

“The feeling whenever you are at the Mater is always different to other places. It is so personal and you never feel like a number; you know every person is there for you and nowhere more so than with the palliative care team,” he said.

“Ailsa had always said ‘Gaz, don’t be sad because dying is just as much a part of life as living.’

She said it’s such a privilege to see a baby born, but also a privilege to be able to support a patient at the other end of their care too.”

Years ago, Lisa’s husband helped build the original Cheeky Little Monkeys on the Sunshine Coast, designing and crafting equipment for children to safely play and explore. Tragically, he passed away in a truck accident, a heartbreak that shifted the family’s world. The grief was immense, but for Lisa and her daughters, Cheeky Little Monkeys became more than just a play centre.

“The girls felt it was essential to repurchase CLM and bring it to Mackay.

“It’s our way of keeping his legacy alive,” Lisa shared.

For them, each laugh, tumble, and game in the centre holds memories, bringing a sense of closeness to their dad, a man who remains a vital part of their everyday lives.

Today, each of Lisa’s daughters contributes to the business, infusing it with unique talents and a shared love for family.

Isabella, at 15, shines as a supervisor at Cheeky Little Monkeys, stepping up in ways that make her mum proud. Alongside her childcare responsibilities, Isabella manages rosters and coordinates birthday parties, demonstrating a maturity beyond her years.

“She makes the children feel safe and loved,” Lisa said, “and watching her create a nurturing environment brings so much warmth to our space.”

Isabella also designs products for their Harper Bee boutique, a line of chic, teen-focused items that promises to expand in the coming months.

Alexis, 14, has also found her stride in the family business. She works as a supervisor at Cheeky Little Monkeys, where she shares her sister’s skill for making kids feel welcome. But Alexis’s creative spark shines brightest at Harper Bee, where she oversees social media, represents the brand as an ambassador, and even collaborates on product design.

“She’s passionate about crafting items that appeal to her age group,” Lisa noted, “and her confidence in front of the camera is incredible. It’s something that draws kids to her online and in-store.”

Her posts and influencer role bring in a loyal following, helping Harper Bee grow into a vibrant, trendy space for teens and tweens.

Stella, at just 11, is the youngest member of the family team, but her contributions are no less impactful. Spending time in the play centre on weekends and school holidays, she’s a comforting, playful presence for the little ones and a quick learner at the retail counter.

Stella is also exploring social media, eager to learn the ropes and connect with other kids her age through the Harper Bee brand.

The concept, Lisa explained, grew out of her own experience as a busy mother seeking fun, stress-free options for her children.

“I wanted to create a place where little ones could go bananas in a safe, age-appropriate environment. Somewhere parents could relax, sip a coffee, and let the kids swing into fun,” she said.

Today, families can drop off their children for up to three hours for just $20 an hour, or stay and enjoy a coffee from Primal Coffee with a snack from YAW Bakery. “Date Night Saturdays” even gives parents the option for a night out, with the peace of mind that their little ones are in good hands.

With their recent business award from the Chamber of Commerce, Cheeky Little Monkeys and its sister ventures are thriving and growing. Soon, Harper Bee will move to a new, location in Mt Pleasant, and Cheeky Little Monkeys itself will undergo a major expansion, including added equipment to accommodate more children and families.

“Harper Bee has become more than just a store; it’s a space where tweens and teens can truly feel at home,” Lisa explained.

“When we learned it was for sale, my daughters begged me to buy it, and now it’s part of our family’s legacy to continue what the original owner, Janine, began.”

The shop is filled with carefully curated gifts, self-care items, and unique products designed just for tweens and teens.

“We pride ourselves on selecting only the best, ensuring every item speaks to their sense of style and individuality, both in-store and online,” Lisa added.

For Lisa, the most rewarding part of the business is watching her daughters blossom within it.

“They bring such creative ideas, and seeing their confidence grow has been a joy,” she shared. Clive and Jenni Burnup have recently welcomed their daughter Issy into the business and are thrilled to continue the family-run legacy of this much-loved local furniture store. The family are proud of the business’ growth; they built the existing Cannonvale shop in the middle of a cane paddock which later turned out to be the Whitsunday Shopping Plaza.

They have also opened a Lazboy Gallery at the end of last year, making it the only Lazboy Gallery between Rockhampton and Townsville. During this time, they also opened an exclusive Zoletti Gallery. The Bowen Store also does Floorcoverings, along with Shutters and Blinds.

Over the past 20 years, Burnups has successfully expanded its commercial Burnups Design Division, a commercial interior decorator service, which operates in conjunction with Burnups Furniture Court. Many projects have been successfully designed and completed on Hamilton Island, Airlie Beach and Bowen. Burnups Design Division has been further developed by Issy who brought her interior design expertise and university qualifications.

The operation is a family affair, “All of the Burnup Family have worked in the business at some stage,” said Clive.

Darrin Keates expressed that he and the entire Viking Mechanical team are thrilled to reach such a significant business milestone, highlighting the commendable achievements celebrated over the past ten years.

“We are extremely proud of the many accomplishments we’ve made over the years. However, the event that kickstarted this adventure was when we were fortunate enough to win the Mackay Airport tender in 2015. This exposure really helped establish our brand,” Darrin explained.

The joining of such a large collaboration, and the positive effect of increased business, prompted Darrin and his wife, Nikki, to re-think their position.

As opportunities continued to blossom, Viking Mechanical took to the national stage, opening two new diesel repair workshops in Mackay and Brisbane in 2017 and 2019. In recognition of their continued growth and commitment to customer service, they were awarded the Approved IVECO Service Centre for Mackay in 2019, followed by the Approved Jaguar Land Rover Service Centre in 2022.

Another proud moment Darrin and Nikki reflect on fondly is how their team operated during the unpredictability of COVID-19.

“Having our dedicated team remain consistently positive during the COVID-19 era showcases our resilience, with very little impact on what we did and continue to do. This made us immensely proud,” Darrin said.

“Receiving the Community Achievement Award – Nominee Ricoh Customer Service Award was perhaps the most rewarding moment, and this could not have been achieved without the outstanding commitment from our people.”

Looking towards the future, Darrin has many plans to advance Viking Mechanical in all areas, ensuring the business continues to offer quality vehicle maintenance and repairs with economical solutions.

Inside the central staff quarters, the homeliness continues, a large meeting table sits front and centre, a modern kitchen gives staff access to a range of handy appliances. To ensure the team are performing at their optimum they have the option of spending time in the "Therapy Corner"  where you can enjoy a relaxing 20 minutes on the massage chair to reinvigorate.

The open plan office is subtly segregated into departments and a soundproof booth allows staff to have private conversations with clients when required.

Overall, the whole office embodies a relaxing yet efficient vibe, providing both staff and clients with a positive and motivational space within which to conduct local real estate business.
