In 2026, Payne Print & Sign will mark an extraordinary milestone of 50 years in business, celebrating half a century of craftsmanship, resilience, and unwavering commitment to the Mackay community. What began as a humble family dream has grown into one of the region’s most respected print and signage businesses, built on hard work, loyalty, and a deep belief in doing things properly.
The Payne story in Mackay began well before the business itself. In 1970, Tom and Grace Payne moved their young family from Toowoomba to Mackay, drawn by opportunity and a desire to build a future in a growing regional centre. Tom took up work with a local printing company, honing his craft while quietly nurturing a bigger vision.
That vision became reality in 1976, when Tom and Grace established Payne Print, working alongside two family members. The early years were demanding, filled with long hours, modest returns, and relentless dedication, but momentum soon followed. By the early 1980s, all four Payne siblings, Kerry, Karen, Lyn, and John, had joined the business, and additional staff were required to keep pace with growing demand.
Growth came not just from skill, but from courage. Tom and Grace personally travelled west of Mackay, introducing Payne Print’s services to mining companies at a time when the region’s resource sector was beginning to boom. Their hands-on approach paid off. By 1986, the business had expanded to a team of 12, requiring the purchase of larger premises to support its future.
The turn of the millennium brought further expansion, with mining contracts flowing in and investment in new machinery and staff becoming essential. Then, in 2008, disaster struck when the Turner Street factory was devastated by flooding. True to the Payne spirit, the business rebuilt, emerging stronger, with new equipment and renewed determination.
Around 2010, Tom stepped into retirement, entrusting the business he built with such care to his family and loyal employees. That trust proved well placed. Payne Print continued to thrive, guided by the values Tom instilled from day one of honesty, craftsmanship, and exceptional service.
Community has always been central to the Payne ethos. The business has long supported charities, sporting clubs, and local organisations, a commitment recognised in 2016 when Payne Print won the Resource Industry Network Award for Connecting with the Community.
In 2018, the business took another significant step forward, expanding into signage and formally becoming Payne Print & Sign. The move allowed the company to offer complete print and signage solutions, combining traditional expertise with modern digital and large-format capabilities, a decision that has proven pivotal to its continued success.
From Tom’s earliest days, working with little more than a second-hand guillotine and a Platen Letterpress machine, to today’s state-of-the-art operation, quality has never been compromised. Stories still circulate of Tom working through the night to meet a deadline, a standard of excellence that remains deeply ingrained in the business today.
Now, approaching its 50th year, Payne Print & Sign employs 28 dedicated staff, servicing clients across Mackay, the Whitsundays, and the Coalfields. Many of the company’s earliest clients, particularly within the mining sector, remain loyal supporters, a testament to relationships built on trust and reliability.
Though Tom, Grace, and John have since passed, their legacy lives on in every project completed, every client relationship maintained, and every employee who carries their vision forward. They would be immensely proud of what Payne Print & Sign has become.
As the business looks ahead to the next chapter, one thing remains unchanged: Payne Print & Sign is, at its heart, a family business, grounded in tradition, driven by innovation, and deeply connected to the community it has proudly served for five decades.
Here’s to 50 years of print, people, and pride and many more to come.

The Belle Property Whitsundays Story
Over the past 12 months, Stephanie McWhirter and her team at Belle Property Whitsundays have experienced a year of tremendous momentum, one marked by organic growth, strong community connection, and a shared sense of purpose that continues to define their success.
The business has gone from strength to strength, with the rental portfolio growing organically to nearly 100 properties, adding a new dimension to what was already a vibrant and high-performing team. Stephanie attributes this success not just to strategy or numbers, but to culture, which is the heart and soul of the Belle Whitsundays office.
“I’m so proud of the culture we’re creating,” Stephanie shares. “We’ve built this team around trust, consistency, and care. I’m so thankful to our community and clients who choose to work with us, they’re the reason we’re able to do what we love every day.”
For Stephanie, real estate isn’t complicated when you focus on what truly matters. Her philosophy is refreshingly simple:
“Real estate doesn’t have to be hard. If you’re consistent, tell the truth, and do what you say you’re going to do, you can have a wonderful, exciting, and rewarding career.”
Stephanie had dreamed of leadership and business ownership for a long time. The reality, she says, has been even better than she imagined. Leadership, for her, isn’t about titles or accolades it’s about people.
“A great leader steps back when things are going well and steps forward when there’s conflict. If you’re lucky enough to be in a position to help others achieve their goals, remember that people are often far more capable and valuable than you think.”
That belief is reflected in her dynamic and supportive team. Each member contributes their own strengths, united by a shared ambition to grow, achieve, and inspire. She also wishes to acknowledge and thank her fiancé and biggest supporter, Adam Webster, whose unwavering belief and encouragement have been a constant source of strength throughout the journey. As they look ahead, the Belle Property Whitsundays team remains focused on their vision: to be the leading real estate office in the region, welcoming more people along for the exciting journey ahead.

The key to a gorgeous, liveable backyard often begins with nailing the aesthetic elements. But the real secret to unlocking its full potential lies in creating zones, layers, and experiences that invite you to relax, reconnect with nature, and make the most of every square metre.
In With the New
Latest garden trends favour softness, natural flow, and comfort, moving away from strict minimalism. Taking its place is soft modernism, a fusion of structured elements with plant movement and texture to create soulful, inviting outdoor spaces.
To achieve this feel in your own backyard:
Zone Your Space for Purpose & Flow
Rather than having one big, undefined plot, divide your backyard into distinct areas; lounge, dining, play, garden nook, etc. Use changes in flooring (decking, gravel, grass), planters, or pergolas to visually separate zones without building walls, adding function while also making your backyard feel larger and smarter.
Add Ambient Lighting
String lights, lanterns, or subtle LED path lighting can transform the mood after sunset. Good lighting highlights key features and extends the usability of your backyard well into the evening.
Incorporate Water Features
A small fountain, bubbling pot, or pond serves as a background soundtrack, visual element, and stress reliever all rolled into one, setting a relaxing undertone to any gathering.
Embrace Sustainable & Natural Elements
Use drought-tolerant natives, recycled materials, and permeable pavers to support sustainability without sacrificing design. Loosen the reins on structure to create a more biodiverse, lively space.
Comfortable Outdoor Living
Think of your backyard as an extension of your home. Add comfy loungers, a fire pit gathering area, or a dining nook under shade sails or a pergola. Mix furniture materials for visual depth, and include soft textiles that withstand the weather.
Vertical Greenery
Use walls, trellises, or hanging planters to maximise green without eating up floor space—great for smaller yards or creating privacy screens.
Incorporate these tips to stay ahead of the curve, with a backyard that not only appears stunning and organised, but genuinely is.

When it comes to advice about your financial future, would you prefer to talk to someone you’ve met face to face or to a person down South over the phone?
We often meet clients who have previously got advice over the phone. Sometimes they have been cold called, sometimes they have responded to an ad or informative article on socials. Whatever marketing strategy these firms use, once you’ve engaged with the marketing specialist to ‘get you one the hook’ they then pass you over to the Financial Planner to discuss your situation. Often that person isn’t even a legal Financial Planner and the person with the appropriate qualifications and licenses only chimes in right at the end once you’re signing up for whatever they are recommending.
Generally, the type of advice provided is very transactional and product based. It’s roll over your super into this new fund and take out this life insurance and income protection or set up this Self-Managed Super Fund and buy this hot property. It’s focussed on a transaction with no great regard for you long term plans and what ongoing engagement you might require. Anything tricky and outside the box like Centrelink, tax matters, discussing your business or projecting out how your retirement goals are looking is ‘out of scope’. Sometimes the product-based advice is reasonable and sometimes it’s an ordinary ‘one size fits all’ type approach with whatever product providers they have a relationship with.
At Eclipse, our advisers take the time to fully understand your situation and provide advice that takes into account your full financial and family situation, goals and future plans. We project out your financial future based on where you are now and what you’re currently doing. This means you can make fully informed decisions about any recommended strategies and products understanding the long term benefits so you can way this up against any costs.
Talking of costs, we often find out that the phone-based advisers down South are actually charging higher fees than we charge for a full, personalised face to face service.
If you think you could benefit from a discussion with a real Financial Planner based in the Whitsundays, give us a call on 49467359 of visit www.eclipsefp.com.au There’s no obligation, the first meeting is free and all fees are spelled out clearly in advance.

Chinese Herbal Medicine has been refined over thousands of years. Some of the formulas still used in clinics today were first recorded before the bible was written. Over time, physicians studied patterns of illness in their communities and created plant-based formulas that supported the body’s natural healing ability. Many of these time-tested formulas are still relied upon today for everyday health concerns to the most serious of illnesses.
Preventative Medicine at its finest.
My clinic’s dispensary houses over one hundred ready-made herbal formulas. They can be used individually or combined to suit the person sitting in front of me. Each has its own strengths. But there is one I return to again and again because of the way it supports the body at its foundation.
While many formulas are used to address illness once it appears, Jade Screen is different - it prevents you from getting sick in the first place. Jade Screen does this by strengthening the body’s natural defences so that common ailments are unable to take hold. This is how it works…
• Ancient meets modern: Developed in 1345, this 3-herb formula is one of the earliest examples of preventative medicine in Chinese herbal history.
• Immunomodulating effects: Supports white blood cell production, enhances mucosal barriers, and reduces inflammatory cytokines.
• Seals the body's exterior: Prevents spontaneous sweating and reduces vulnerability to external pathogens.
• Supports respiratory health: Effective in managing chronic bronchitis, asthma, and allergic rhinitis.
• Chemotherapy support: Improves immune resilience during cancer treatment.
• Adaptogenic properties: Assists in recovery from chronic stress and fatigue.
• Clinically validated: Supported by modern research for immune and respiratory function.
• Safe for ages 6 months to 120 years.
Key ingredients:
• Astragalus (Huang Qi) – immune booster, antiviral, and antioxidant
• Atractylodes (Bai Zhu) – supports digestion, reduces inflammation, strengthens immunity
• Saposhnikovia (Fang Feng) – regulates cytokines, enhances Qi movement
Who May Benefit?
I often recommend Jade Screen Formula for people who:
• Catch colds and flu easily
• Have children who seem to pick up every bug at school or daycare
• Experience recurring hay fever or sinus irritation
• Want to support their immune system during winter or high-exposure periods
• Feel “run down” after stress or illness
• Immune-compromised people as a result of medication and treatment.
The goal is not to suppress symptoms—it is to build strength from within. When the body is stronger, illness has less of a foothold.
This approach has been used continuously for more than 700 years, and modern research has been exploring its effects on immune modulation, inflammation pathways, and respiratory health.
A Gentle, Natural Approach
Jade Screen Formula is:
• 100% Plant-based Mother Nature, nothing added, nothing taken away.
• Safe for long-term use
• Traditionally used long-term for prevention and protection.
• Well-tolerated and suitable for both adults and children
In my experience, when a person’s underlying immunity ia supported with Jade Screen Formula their persistent illness challenges become a memory. A three month course is all that is typically needed, and after that once a year around May or September for a week or two.
Ready to Strengthen Your Natural Defences?
If recurring sickness is something you or your family struggle with, we can take a gentle, natural, and well-tested approach.
Book a consultation and we’ll assess whether Jade Screen Formula is the right fit for you.

No other company have built a reputation on building resilience, both in homes and in business, than Geiger Solutions. In the last few months. The company has doubled in size, forged a stronger team culture, and set its sights on even greater horizons.
Growth on All Fronts
While Geiger Solutions continues to strengthen its footing in the commercial and industrial sectors, the domestic side of the business has taken off faster than expected. “Our domestic work is accelerating well beyond expectation,” said Brad Geiger, CEO of Geiger Solutions.
Homeowners, it seems, are recognising the value of local expertise, reliability, and the kind of friendly professionalism that defines the Geiger team.
Building Stronger, Smarter, Safer Homes
After the spate of wild weather across North Queensland, awareness around home resilience has reached new heights especially among first home buyers.
“The Cyclone upgrade incentives have seen a rise in enquiries from customers looking to strengthen their homes,” Brad explained.
And when it comes to older homes, the same structural flaws pop up time and again, especially in roof frameworks.
“Roof framework is something that we are upgrading with almost every roof replacement”, said Brad
“The structural standards of yester-year are no longer compliant with current cyclone standards for roof framework and tie-down. Recent innovations in building materials and tie-down fasteners have made it easy to streamline the upgrade on an existing roof frame and make it very affordable for the customer.”
A Team That Works Together IN and OUT of WORK
Behind the success story is a workplace culture that many tradespeople dream of. With early starts, sweaty days, and plenty of camaraderie, the Geiger Solutions team has built something rare a family atmosphere that fuels their strong and energetic workforce.
Every Friday the Geiger team have a BBQ after work with everybody including families welcome to join. Colleagues also spend weekends together, fishing and camping. Brad said it’s a real family type vibe.
This sense of belonging doesn’t just make for happy employees; it translates directly to happy customers. Clients often comment on the team’s politeness and energy onsite, with glowing feedback rolling in after every project.
Streamlined, Smart, and Ready for More
Geiger Solutions has also undergone a quiet revolution behind the scenes, with a complete refresh of their administrative structure.
They’ve made radical changes with their admin staff and structure of the company, both proving to be effective for the way they see Geiger headed.
And as the business scales, one thing remains non-negotiable: the ‘small enough to care’ philosophy that has defined the Geiger name for generations.
“This is a family business and in the tradition of my grandfather Roy Geiger our name is on our company therefore ‘our name’ is literally our reputation. We understand that and it means a lot to us.”
What’s Next
Over the next 12 to 24 months, Geiger Solutions plans to keep growing its local presence, continuing to serve Mackay and surrounding regions with the same energy and pride that’s driven their success so far.

What began in 2005 as a small team of electricians in Mackay has grown into a powerhouse operation, lighting up Queensland’s biggest industries. GB Industries has spent the past 20 years wiring up everything from coal mines to rail networks, proving that when it comes to innovation and grit, regional businesses can punch well above their weight.
From its early days with just a couple of staff, GB Industries has grown to a steady workforce, operating across South East Queensland, and deep into Queensland’s mining heartlands. Their projects aren’t just about switches and sockets; they have accomplished massive projects, including complete substation replacements, large-scale control systems and automation upgrades, integration of significant electrical safety systems, and installation of cutting-edge processing plant at some of Queensland’s biggest mines.
What makes GB Industries stand out is the reputation they have built in shaping the next generation of tradespeople. GB Industries has a strong pipeline of apprentices, thanks to its partnership with CQ University. The company ensures that young electricians come out job-ready, with industrial experience far beyond that of its competitors. Their commitment to apprentices even saw a second-year apprentice claim runner-up in the Master Electricians Apprentice of the Year awards.
In 20 years of operation, GB Industries has successfully supported and trained over 30 electrical apprentices to the completion of their Certificate III in Electrotechnology, and they will be adding a further two apprentices to their current group in 2026.
In addition to trade apprenticeships, GB Industries also supports business traineeships through a partnership with MRAEL, where their trainees complete a 12-month program and earn a Certificate III in Business Administration.
Australia is experiencing a trade shortage, meaning new apprentices will never be short of work upon completion. However, it’s not just work that makes GB Industries the place to be; it’s the culture.
The workplace culture values flexibility, teamwork, and a balanced approach. With lifestyle-friendly rosters and a mix of seasoned professionals and fresh talent, GB Industries isn’t just wiring Queensland’s future; it’s shaping it.

For Greater Whitsunday Innovation (GWI), 2025 was a year of connection, collaboration, and growth across the Mackay Isaac Whitsunday (MIW) region. From launching new digital capability programs to hosting the pilot Tech Verge event, GWI helped regional businesses adapt, innovate, and thrive.
“This year has been one of transformation,” says GWI Manager, Kirra Tully.
“The rebrand to Greater Whitsunday Innovation set the tone for a stronger regional identity, one that celebrates collaboration and puts innovation at the centre of everything we do.”
Milestones and Achievements
A standout moment was the Tech Verge 2025 pilot. A one-day innovation showcase uniting businesses, educators, industry, and community leaders to explore practical digital tools and smarter ways of working. This inaugural summit elevated the region’s innovation agenda.
GWI also delivered high-impact programs including the first live Mine Pitch event, connecting start-ups with resources sector decision-makers, and hands-on learning through the Microsoft Automation course and AI workshop series, empowering businesses to streamline operations and build digital confidence.
Building on this momentum, early-bird tickets for Tech Verge 2026 are already on sale.
Partnerships that Made a Difference
Collaboration was central to GWI’s success. Stronger partnerships with Mackay Regional Council, Local Buying Foundation, Resource Industry Network, Resources Centre of Excellence, Greater Whitsunday Alliance, NBN Co, Queensland AI Hub, Regional Tech Hub, and support from the Queensland Government helped bring innovation to every corner of the MIW region.
This year also saw a rise in small business partnerships and stronger local networks, reinforcing the region’s innovation ecosystem.
“Every collaboration is about delivering practical value to our community,” says Project Officer Zoe Knight.
“It’s about giving businesses the skills and confidence to try something new and see how technology can actually work for them.”
Strategic Direction and Evolving Focus
Guided by our Board of Directors and Stakeholder Reference Group, GWI sharpened its focus on digital adoption, automation, and accessibility. From operations to customer service, digital is now part of every business. By balancing rapid tech advancement with the realities of small business, GWI ensures progress remains achievable and inclusive.
Through workshops, mentoring, and one-to-one support, participants are gaining the skills and confidence to create meaningful, lasting change across the region.
Strengthening Innovation Culture
Beyond individual programs, GWI focused on shaping a stronger innovation culture. Initiatives like AI workshops and Let’s Talk Internet made technology part of everyday business language. More local enterprises are adopting digital tools, automating workflows, and exploring how tech can enhance - not replace - the human side of work.
Community engagement deepened, with strong participation across events and growing collaboration between industry, education, and local government. Innovation is becoming a shared regional mindset.
Challenges, Lessons and Inspiration
Delivering large-scale activity with a small team required creativity and prioritisation. These experiences reinforced a central lesson: innovation is strongest when shared. Hearing how local businesses grew through GWI’s programs, from streamlining operations to launching new ventures, became the team’s biggest source of pride and motivation.
Looking Ahead
As 2026 approaches, GWI will continue delivering digital capability and mentoring programs, and strengthen the MIW region’s reputation as a hub for technology and innovation.
“Our focus will stay on people, helping them connect and grow together,” says Kirra.
One Word for the Year: Momentum
2025 cemented Greater Whitsunday Innovation’s role as the region’s home of collaboration, creativity, and opportunity — setting the stage for an even brighter year ahead.

Cody and Taleah Virgona aren’t just business partners, they’re a husband-and-wife team building Reef Side Plumbing together. Combining Cody’s hands-on plumbing expertise with Taleah’s skills in accounts and administration, they’ve created a family-run business that reflects their shared values.
“Taleah and I have always had a desire to create something of our own. After years of working for companies, we wanted to do things differently to offer our customers a more personal experience with someone they can genuinely trust.” Cody said.
Starting a business as a family unit wasn’t without challenges, but for the Virgonas, the rewards have been immeasurable. “Taking that first initial step and diving in headfirst is one of the scariest things you can do. But it’s also been the most rewarding. Seeing the positive response from our customers never gets old.”
Their guiding principle is simple: purpose over profit. "When you lead with passion, compassion, and hard work, everything else eventually lines up,” Cody explains. Mentorship has also helped them navigate the road ahead. “The biggest influence would be my fellow mates in the trade business, especially one of my good friends, Sam Beardsell from Beards Plumbing and Roofing… Having mates who’ve walked the road before you really helps you prepare for the unseen, and when they genuinely want to see you succeed, it means a lot.”
Working as a family shape how they build business relationships. “We don’t see clients or suppliers as transactions, they’re part of our journey,” Cody said, “Taking the time to listen, communicate openly, and deliver on what you promise builds trust, and trust is everything in business.”
Even personal challenges have strengthened their partnership as Cody recalls, “I used to race motocross competitively, but in 2020 I had a bad accident that left me with a broken back, a broken pelvis on both sides, and a collapsed lung… With the incredible support of my wife and family, I made it back to 100% no issues at all.”
Balancing family life with running the business is key. “Because it’s Taleah and I running the business, it can be hard to switch off but we’ve learned to set boundaries and make time for family. We remind ourselves that we built this business for a better life.”
Looking ahead, the Virgonas aim to grow Reef Side Plumbing as a trusted, family-run business. “We’ll keep focusing on quality work, strong relationships, and growing at a pace that still lets us stay connected with our customers.” Grateful for the community’s support, they add, “Every job, every conversation, every challenge has shaped who we are today. We’re excited for what’s ahead and proud to be doing it together as a family, and for our community.”
Favourite way to unwind?
Anywhere we can spend time together as a family with my wife, Taleah, and the kids. A favourite is riding the Finch Hatton trails with my young fella early in the morning. You’re up in the hills, surrounded by nature, and it’s a reminder of why we work so hard.

Luke Johnson and Chloe Rovegllia are steering J&B Marine into an exciting new era, combining decades of experience with fresh energy and innovation. Luke, who has been with the business for 17 years, and Chloe working within the business for just under two, have taken the reins of the long-standing family enterprise with pride and vision.
Founded in 1993 by Luke’s parents, Johno and Bobbie, J&B Marine has long been a staple of the local boating community. Luke joined the business at just 15, completing his apprenticeship under the guidance of his parents. Over the years, the family-run operation has flourished, expanding its offerings to include boat sales, service, Toro mowers, and a fully stocked boating chandlery. Chloe brings her background in IT and project management to the business, helping streamline operations and support the transition into new ownership.
“Johno and Bobbie have been a massive help in shaping both Luke and I over the past few years,” Chloe says, “mentoring us into taking over the business and keeping the boat afloat.”
Since assuming ownership in July 2025, Luke and Chloe have already marked a number of milestones. The opportunity to continue as Mercury dealers has been a highlight, as has launching an online shopping feature that allows customers to browse products with ease.
For Chloe and Luke, running J&B Marine is about more than transactions; it’s about people. “Our staff have become family to us and aren’t just employees but help our business operate in many ways.” They explain that this philosophy extends to their customers as well, with the team committed to providing top-tier service and ensuring every client leaves satisfied. “Seeing customers happy with the outcome and service we provide is the most rewarding part of what we do,” Chloe adds.
Chloe and Luke see the industry evolving with technology. Online bookings, service reminders, and digital shopping are trends they are embracing to make boating more accessible and convenient for their growing community.
Together, they combine expertise, innovation, and a deep appreciation for the community that has supported J&B Marine for more than 30 years.
With strong family roots, a committed team, and a focus on future growth, Chloe and Luke are ensuring that J&B Marine continues to thrive, keeping the boat afloat for generations to come.

Over its 12-year evolution, Country Charm Christmas Cottage has taken on many forms, from a humble market stall offering homeware and garden decor to a cafe renowned for its elegant high tea gatherings. But a decade and a few identity pivots later, it has built a reputation as Mackay’s one-stop Christmas hub, becoming synonymous with the festive period in the region.
Andrea Galea, the company’s founder, remembers those early days vividly. “I used to go with mum to the local markets and sell homewares and garden decor… and it all just flowed from there.”
From those market beginnings, the business found a permanent home on Matsens Road in Marian, in a quaint, family-owned cottage nestled on a working cane farm. After intense renovations, it became Country Charm Garden and Gifts—a warm, welcoming destination, known for its extensive range and popular cafe. But as the years went on, Andrea’s longstanding passion for the festive season could no longer be contained; a passion that would eventually give rise to Country Charm Christmas Cottage.
“I've always loved Christmas—I have five trees myself!” She exclaims. “Christmas was also getting bigger and bigger in Australia, and there was nothing like [the store] around.” The shift proved transformative, positioning the cottage as a festive haven offering “pretty much everything you could want for Christmas.” From glittering lanterns and trees to baubles, garlands, and a wide range of rare collectables, some of which are one in 500 worldwide, Country Charm is stacked with everything from simple decorations to limited-edition pieces.
“We try and cover everyone, every style, every taste in Christmas,” says Andrea. “Our main thing is just trying to always have a variety for people to choose from… We’re trying to give people what we couldn't find in Mackay.”
Alongside the wide range, the peaceful country surroundings provide a tranquil, scenic backdrop by day, while the cottage glows with twinkling lights during night shopping, creating the magical atmosphere that typifies Christmas.
“Our slogan is ‘creating the magic of Christmas’, and that is my aim—to make the shop as magical as possible, so that the minute they walk through the door, they can feel it.”
The cafe also remains a cornerstone of the cottage, where Andrea’s sister, Bernadine Agius, and mother, Maryann Scriha, run the show—the latter becoming locally ‘famous’ for her delightfully scrumptious scones, all made with love.
With Andrea, her sister, and mother ever-present, and her daughter Amelia helping in the shop outside school hours, Country Charm prides itself on the warm, family atmosphere it cultivates. This sense of family was also shaped by Joe Scriha, Andrea’s late father, who was a fixture at the cottage.
“He was our chief elf. He was always here,” says Andrea. “He literally sat in the coffee shop, and he would just sit there and talk to all the customers. He was like a family member to them.” His presence left a lasting mark on the spirit of the shop, helping create the welcoming environment visitors still experience today.
“The whole operation is orientated around family,” Andrea explains. “When people come here, they like that, because they feel like a part of it. We’ve always tried to make it feel that way.”
Usually open from May through Christmas each year, Country Charm Christmas Cottage has become a beloved destination for festive shopping in Mackay, where visitors can find everything from decorations to treats, all wrapped in the warmth of a family-run, magical Christmas atmosphere.

You wouldn’t sell a home without seeking professional advice, so why would you buy one without it?
Buying a home is one of the biggest financial commitments most people make in their lives, and First Choice Home Loans QLD is here to make the process easier. With more than 30 years of experience in the finance industry and a personal approach to banking, their team of mortgage brokers is dedicated to finding the right loan to suit each client’s needs.
Owner Gail Roots explained that part of the reason she started her locally owned business was to offer a more personal approach to every loan, building genuine relationships with clients rather than rushing through transactions. She wanted to ensure clients always had a consistent, familiar person to work with throughout their home loan journey.
“We’re not a franchise. It’s a locally owned business,” Gail said.
“It’s a family business. My daughter works with me, along with two other brokers, and she’ll eventually take over the business.”
Gail’s decision to start her own business came after years in the banking industry.
“I was inspired to help people and loved being part of the process of helping someone get their own home,” she said. “That wasn’t always possible when working within a large institution.”
At First Choice Home Loans, clients benefit from a more personal experience.
“Most of the time, you’re dealing directly with a business owner, so you’re getting the same person each time you come back,” Gail explained. “When you go back to a bank, you’re often dealing with someone new, which means having to re-establish that trust and relationship every time.”
Unlike banks that are limited to their own range of products, Gail and her team can look across a wide range of lenders to find the best options for each client.
“We’ve got the ability to give more choice,” Gail said. “A lot of customers think we choose the bank that pays us the most, but not for us. We look at all the lenders, choose what’s suitable for the customer, and then let the customer decide.”
The team’s main focus is helping clients purchase a home, particularly first home buyers, as well as buying land, building lifestyle or larger blocks, refinancing, accessing equity for home improvements or major purchases such as a car, and securing investment properties, investment loans and self-managed super fund lending.
“We also do personal loans,” Gail added.
Gail explained that the business has grown significantly over the past 20 years, starting with herself as the sole broker and one staff, and expanding to include three additional brokers and an assistant.
“It makes me really proud how my business has grown, and it's very stable,” Gail enthused.
When buying your new home, Gail says her best advice is to “see a mortgage broker,” so you can “see what your options are.”
