Clare McAlpine's business journey is just beginning – but she’s already built wisdom, confidence and a reputation for reshaping how companies operate.
Five months ago, drawing on experience in operations, administration and accounting, Clare launched New Leaf Business Solutions, a consultancy firm helping businesses create structure and clarity.
Combining practical strategy with empathy, she specialises in simplifying complexity, improving systems and streamlining operations so clients find organisation and control.
“My work focuses on the operational backbone of small business; the systems, structure, and processes that often go unnoticed but make the biggest difference,” Clare explains.
“It sits at the intersection of people and systems. It’s not just about efficiency; it’s creating sustainable ways of working that support the business and the person behind it. My goal is to make things simpler, more aligned, and easier to manage long-term.”
The idea was born from the same pursuit of work/life balance that brought her family to Mackay from Sydney.
“After years of building experience across different roles, I reached a point where I wanted to use my skills in a way that felt purposeful and flexible, particularly as a mum,” she says.
"One of the biggest milestones has been simply taking the leap, backing myself and turning an idea into something real.
“The highlights have been seeing the concept resonate, and watching my confidence grow alongside the business itself.
“What excites me most is that this is just the beginning. I’m building something intentionally, and I’m looking forward to growing it in a way that stays aligned with my values and the community I’m part of.”
What wisdom would you share with aspiring businesswomen?
There's no straight line to success. It’s messy, it takes time and requires resilience.
Real success isn’t about job titles – it's about feeling aligned with your work and who you’re becoming.
Don’t wait until you feel “ready.” Back yourself, keep learning, and say yes to the things that stretch you.

Laura Hamilton truly embodies the phrase “be the change you want to see in the world.”
After navigating many years of her own complex health journey, Laura founded Elegance Lymphatic Care with a mission to improve access to specialised lymphatic support. Through her experience, she witnessed firsthand how overlooked lymphatic care can be within the Australian healthcare system.
“I know what it feels like to be passed from provider to provider with no real answers,” Laura says.
“I personally endured years of pain, swelling, misdiagnosis, and feeling unheard while trying to manage lipoedema and lymphatic dysfunction, eventually developing lymphoedema as well.”
Rather than allowing those challenges to define her, Laura used them as motivation to create something meaningful.
“I didn’t want others to endure what I did without support,” she explains.
“Every client matters. Every story matters. I’m deeply grateful for the trust our community places in us with their healthcare and education.”
“Now I get to watch people regain hope — seeing clients walk out feeling lighter, more comfortable, empowered, and finally understood.”
What started as a sole-operator clinic run entirely by Laura has grown significantly. Today, Elegance Lymphatic Care has expanded into a team of four staff members and continues to grow, reflecting the increasing demand for specialised lymphatic care within the region.
The clinic is ALA accredited, supporting clients across Mackay and surrounding regions, while also assisting people throughout Australia and New Zealand with compression garment supply. We also offer online consultations for assistance with Lipoedema and Lymphoedema Navigation.
Elegance Lymphatic Care provides a comprehensive range of services designed to support lymphatic health, recovery and long-term wellbeing. These include Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD), Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT), compression garment fitting and supply, pneumatic compression therapy using Lympha Press systems, pre- and post-surgical oedema management, and advanced therapies such as low-level cold laser therapy, deep oscillation therapy and full spectrum infrared sauna therapy.
The clinic also provides wound management, scar therapy, rehabilitation support and medical navigation, helping clients access the services and programs they need to achieve the best possible outcomes.
Importantly, the clinic supports a wide range of people living with chronic conditions and complex health needs. Services extend to NDIS participants, aged-care clients, and people managing long-term conditions such as lymphoedema, lipoedema, cancer-related swelling, post-surgical recovery, neurological conditions, and injury-related oedema.
Laura has also become a respected voice in the field, recently being invited to speak at the Lipoedema Conference in Canberra and the Health Summit in Sydney.
Despite these achievements, it is the work within the clinic that means the most to her.
“The biggest milestone is the trust our clients place in us — and hearing them say, ‘I finally feel heard.’ That never gets old,” Laura says.
“What makes our clinic unique is lived experience paired with clinical knowledge. Both therapists wear compression daily. We don’t just understand these conditions professionally — we live them.”
“That creates a level of empathy, insight and practical understanding that clients deeply appreciate.”
Laura believes one of her greatest strengths lies in connecting with people and helping them understand their bodies.
“My strength is educating clients and creating realistic, whole-body treatment plans that support long-term outcomes — not just quick fixes,” she explains.
“We tell it as it is here. No hidden agendas, all cards on the table, so we can provide the best care possible.”
As Elegance Lymphatic Care continues to grow, Laura and her team remain deeply committed to expanding education and awareness around lymphatic health throughout North Queensland and beyond.
A strong focus of the clinic’s work is helping people understand the importance of early intervention, appropriate lymphatic care, and the correct fitting and use of compression garments — something Laura says is often overlooked in traditional healthcare pathways. By providing professional garment fitting, personalised guidance, and ongoing support, the team ensures clients receive solutions that are practical, comfortable, and truly suited to their individual needs.
Driven by a powerful combination of lived experience, clinical knowledge, and genuine compassion, Laura is helping shift the conversation around lymphatic care. Her work is not only supporting individuals living with lymphatic conditions but also raising awareness within the broader community and healthcare sector.
Through education, advocacy, and patient-centred care, Laura and her growing team are ensuring more people feel seen, supported, and empowered throughout their health journey.

Kathryn Behan, General Manager of Mackay Private Hospital and the founder of boutique cosmetic aesthetics clinic Love the Way You Look, represents a new style of leadership; one that refuses to choose between strength and empathy.
She leads with ethical decision-making, accountability and care, balancing operational excellence with a genuine focus on people.
Kathryn’s background spans nursing, education and clinical leadership, giving her a comprehensive understanding of healthcare delivery from frontline practice through to executive management. This breadth of experience has shaped her passion for improving patient outcomes while building sustainable systems and strong, multidisciplinary teams.
Since assuming leadership at Mackay Private Hospital, Kathryn has overseen growth in service capability, governance maturity and organisational reputation. The expansion of day programs and allied health services has strengthened the hospital’s ability to meet the evolving needs of the Mackay community. Her priority is to ensure patients, referrers and the broader region are aware that her team is accessible, capable and ready to deliver contemporary, evidence-based care.
In parallel with her healthcare leadership role, Kathryn is also a qualified yoga teacher. The principles of mindfulness and balance drawn from this practice influence her leadership style, supporting calm decision-making and a considered, people-centred approach.
Kathryn believes effective leadership requires empathy alongside accountability. She recognises that personal challenges can impact professional performance and advocates for leadership that is supportive, respectful and solutions-focused. In her experience, psychologically safe workplaces foster stronger engagement, retention and better outcomes for both staff and patients.
When asked what advice she would offer to women pursuing leadership or business ownership, Kathryn’s response is simple and assured:
“There is no reason you cannot achieve your goals and ambitions. Be purpose driven and trust in your own abilities”
She also highlights the importance of a strong support network, expressing gratitude for her husband, Tom, and the people around her who help maintain balance between professional responsibilities and personal life. Sustainable success, Kathryn believes, is built through perspective, connection and support.
Q: Describe your leadership style in three words
A: Driven. Grounded. Compassionate.
Q: What is a leadership non-negotiable for you?
A: “What I allow, I teach. Leaders must actively shape workplace culture by clearly setting expectations and addressing behaviours early—before they become embedded.”

She’s not the loudest in the room, but she carries a quiet confidence – one that has seen her win multiple real estate awards across the Pioneer Valley, and, more importantly, the lasting trust of her clients.
That woman is Robyn Agius.
Robyn has been recognised through the REA Excellence Awards, which measure key performance indicators including volume of properties sold, median sold price, median days advertised, ratings and reviews, total properties sold, and verified client feedback for Mirani, Gargett and Finch Hatton.
For Robyn, the recognition reflects a simple, wholehearted focus on her service to others.
“My client’s success is my priority and my work ethic reflects that,” she said.
“These awards are an acknowledgement of this and I feel quite humble and privileged to have been trusted to assist so many clients achieve their real estate goals over the years.”
Robyn believes her success stems from strong local knowledge and a genuine passion for the region. She credits her regional knowledge, passion for community, and attitude towards providing excellent service and honest, open communication for her achievements.
Having lived in Marian for more than two decades, Robyn opened her office at 337 Anzac Avenue Marian in 2024, allowing her to offer a personalised service across the Pioneer Valley and surrounding areas.
Her independent colleague, Shirlz Russell, supported by newest team member Jackie Houseman under the Area Specialist banner, assists clients across northern communities, while Mackell Caruana and Lauren Griinke work closely with Robyn to support clients from East Mackay and the Southern region, right through to the Upper Pioneer Valley.
For Robyn, it’s not awards or accolades that define success, rather it’s the trust of her clients, the integrity of her work, and the opportunity to give back to her community.
Despite her many accolades, Robyn remains grounded in the values that have shaped her.
“My mum has influenced me the most,” she said.
“She has a heart of service and integrity. She overcame all sorts of challenges, always pressing forward with phenomenal faith and courage.”
Robyn also believes in giving back to the community, which is why she regularly donates a generous amount from property sales to local schools and charities.
“I love what I do,” she said.
“That’s the beauty of a career in real estate. It can be whatever you want it to be, especially if you put your clients first.”
As part of her commitment to helping local women build long-term financial security, Robyn and Shirlz are hosting their next Women’s Wealth Creation Workshop on the 16th of May at Ocean International – a powerful one-day event focused on practical property-based wealth strategies.
Experts from around the country will guide attendees through superannuation, investing in property, retirement planning, and practical cashflow management, while a specialist will introduce an innovative budgeting app designed specifically for women. Attendees will also explore mindset strategies to overcome the beliefs that often hold women back from financial independence.
“This workshop isn’t about hype – it’s about education, clarity, and giving women the confidence to take action.”
Q: What advice would you give your younger self?
A: Be kind to yourself and invest in yourself first — by that I mean, always put aside savings from every pay, right from your first pay. Be consistent and determined. Make a wise, modest property purchase, keep it, and use the capital growth to build equity and wealth. What you do at the beginning can influence the rest of your life greatly.

Shirlz Russell is redefining what it means to be a woman in property. Armed with knowledge and unstoppable drive, she carves her own path with unshakable confidence and commanding authority.
Before stepping into the role of a listing agent, Shirlz built her foundation working alongside buyers, particularly women seeking to grow wealth through property. Already a licensed real estate professional, she became a strong advocate for purchasers, guiding them toward strategic decisions that would shape long term financial security. That experience gave her a sharp lens on the industry and ultimately the confidence to do things differently.
Rather than start under another agency in a traditional sales associate role, Shirlz chose to launch her business from day one under the Area Specialist model — backing herself from the outset.
“I wanted to enter the industry on my own terms and build something that felt genuinely aligned with who I am,” she says.
Her success hasn’t been built on gimmicks or flashy tactics. It’s been built on consistency, transparency and authenticity.
“The real advantage,” she explains, “is being comfortable enough to show up as yourself. Clients can feel when it’s genuine — and that trust changes everything.”
In an industry often driven by noise and competition, Shirlz consciously chooses focus over comparison, prioritising clear communication, strong relationships and service grounded in meaningful trust. Rather than watching what everyone else is doing, she keeps her attention on her clients and her values.
“I’m just doing me,” she says simply.
Her confidence in both professional and personal settings shines through in the way she carries herself. Now, as a business owner, a mother and a respected woman in the community, her advice is grounded in lived experience and self-belief.
“In everything you do, back yourself. Stop waiting for external validation and find confidence in the rhythm that works for you.”
While real estate has traditionally been viewed as male dominated, Shirlz sees opportunity where others see imbalance. For her, being a woman in the industry is not a disadvantage — it’s a strength.
“Women are often the key decision-makers when it comes to property,” she says.
“Understanding how they think, what they value and how they feel about a home gives me an edge.”
When speaking with Shirlz, there is an undeniable sense of contentment in what she has built, both professionally and personally.
“I’m so in love with my life and what I’m doing right now. I couldn’t be happier.”
Beyond real estate, Shirlz is a driving force within her community. She serves as President of Zonta Mackay and is Chair of the Board at Chances House, Mackay’s local homelessness drop-in centre. She also sits on the board of Catherine McAuley College, where her teenage daughter Olivia attends — championing opportunity, dignity and long-term security for women and families across the region.
Supporting Olivia’s pursuits stands as one of her proudest achievements yet, and she attributes much of her success as a parent to her greatest role model – her own mother.
A self-confessed foodie with a love language of cooking, Shirlz treasures time with friends and family. Travel fuels her curiosity, and home life is lively with two cavoodles and two cats who live in playful harmony.
With big plans unfolding and an exciting announcement imminent, Shirlz is expanding beyond the traditional model — creating a space where clients, collaborators and community can come together under one roof.
In a crowded marketplace, Shirlz does not aim to be everything to everyone. She knows the market, and more importantly, she knows how to connect. If you are looking for a trusted professional to guide your next move in home, business or investment property, Shirlz Russell stands ready, confident, capable and unapologetically authentic!
Advice to your younger self? “Learn to trust your own voice. The moment you stop relying on external validation is the moment you start moving with confidence.”

Zambrero Franchise Partner Evelyn Cartlidge opened Cannonvale’s beloved store 10 years ago, after following her heart and finding exactly what she was looking for.
Born in Southeast Queensland, Evelyn arrived in the Whitsundays in 2012, aged 22. Having spent the previous three years working her way around Australia taking on everything from farm work to sales, she visited a friend in Bowen. Evelyn’s intention was to stay for a brief spell before crossing back to Western Australia for the grain harvest. Only, as many do, she fell in love with our region and never left.
Evelyn had spent a few years electrical testing and tagging when she decided she wanted the Whitsundays to be her permanent home. With that realisation came the time to set down roots and discover what it was she really wanted to do.
It wasn’t long before she found it.
“Since I was a little girl, I’ve loved eating and making Mexican food,” Evelyn explains.
“On a trip to Townsville, I tried Zambrero for the first time and loved it. I did a bit of research about the brand and on my second visit, while sitting in the food court, I noticed their napkins said they were looking for franchise partners. I enquired soon after and was signed up by the end of the phone call.”
In 2016, she opened the Cannonvale store.
What sealed the deal for Evelyn was finding a business that aligned with her ethics.
A highlight of her career has been watching the company’s Plate 4 Plate initiative change lives.
“When we opened the Cannonvale store, the Zambrero network had donated approximately 6 million meals,” Evelyn says.
“Today we are sitting at over 100 million. I still remember the day we ticked over 10 million; they paused our digital counter so we could take photos and appreciate the milestone. It’s incredibly humbling to think in a relatively short time, we have changed the lives of so many people, both in Australia and overseas, who would otherwise have gone without food.
“Last year as a restaurant, Cannonvale also began a monthly donation to Cents for Seeds, an initiative of the Love Mercy Foundation. We have donated over 200kg of seeds in aid of the 19,000 Ugandan women Love Mercy has in their program.”
As well as this impact, another highlight for Evelyn was seeing her store become increasingly self-sustaining. After investing years of hard work and long days to launch the franchise, she could step back, building a team she could trust to run the show whilst she was away.
“I stopped working nights and was able to do housework at a normal hour, instead of keeping my neighbours awake with the vacuuming!” Evelyn laughs.
“I can honestly say I wouldn’t have made it to this point personally or professionally without the support of my parents, customers, team and wider ‘village’. While I may be the Franchisee, to say I do this all on my own would be erroneous.”
What advice would you offer other young businesswomen?
Hold on. Everything will be alright in the end. If it’s not alright, it is not yet the end.
What inner qualities do you believe matter most for success in business?
Grit. The ability to get stuck in and get it done. And a positive outlook. If you’re always thinking about what could go wrong, without taking the time to celebrate what is going right, you’re suffering the whole time. What’s the point in that?

Dr Dee Hacking has dedicated her career to making women feel their best, providing holistic support at Alfred St Mackay Allied Health Clinic, employing alternative medicine and therapies that, simply put, make her clients feel good.
“My goal is to reconnect you with your body’s natural ability to heal and thrive,” Dr Dee states. To do so, she employs homeopathic medicine, remedial massage, hypnotherapy, shiatsu, reflexology, frequency therapies, and mind-body connection practices.
With 31 years in business and a string of credentials to her name, Dr Dee has approached life with a tenacity to learn as a self-proclaimed ‘yes-woman’, believing that “true growth occurs, and your light shines brightest when you are doing the things that you don't ‘feel’ like doing”.
Dr Dee pivoted into homeopathy from her role as an autopsy physician, deciding she “wanted to work with someone with a pulse”. She remembers that as a child she dreamt of being a marine biologist, medical doctor, an artist and an author. Being unable to dive in deep water, she became three out of the four.
Dr Dee’s career highlights include opening her own small publishing house, writing her own books, and healing the local community of Mackay. Her peers were at times doubtful one woman could accomplish so much.
“I was told over and over to quit; that it was too much, I was mad for being so dedicated, and I would burn out,” Dee relays. But, she is strong in her resolve that, “As a successful woman, you can do what you want the most, and have it all, and be it all too.”
The key, for Dee? It’s about focusing on consistent, intentional, everyday actions that nourish your body, mind, social interactions, and self-empowerment. “When you feel that you’ve got this,” she says, “Then, you do. ”
What advice would you give your younger self?
A: Don't listen when they say you are too much, too loud, too ambitious. You can, and you will, with your strong self-belief. Find fun in each day, and don't let anyone dull your sparkle.
Q: What non-negotiables support your success?
A: Show up for yourself first. Prioritise sleep, exercise, outside time and fun. Put these
first for longevity and sustainability in business.

What if success wasn’t about doing more — but about living better?
For Mental Health Clinician and Founder of Personal Transitions, Sharon Ashman, her professional motto says it all: “Turn life into living.” It’s a simple phrase, but it carries depth especially for women balancing ambition, family, responsibility, and self-care.
With proud Irish heritage and a grounded outlook, Sharon believes lasting success begins with inner strength. Passion matters. So does integrity. But just as important are patience and steady determination. “We are our business,” she says, particularly in health and wellbeing. If we are exhausted, disconnected, or running on empty, it shows — not only in our work, but in our homes.
Sharon’s journey is a reminder that careers don’t need to follow a straight line to be meaningful. Her first professional highlight was working as a chef with Hilton International in Europe, a role that demanded discipline, teamwork, and resilience. From there, she moved into teaching, natural medicine, and eventually completed a Master’s in Mental Health Nursing. Each chapter added another layer of understanding about people, pressure, and perseverance.
Today, her work with children, adolescents, and families, particularly in ADHD and Autism, centres on building emotional regulation and self-belief. When a young person learns to manage overwhelming feelings, or an adult rediscovers confidence, that is success. Those quiet victories matter more than numbers on a balance sheet.
Inspired by Viktor Frankl and his book Man's Search for Meaning, Sharon believes purpose mixed with passion is what carries us through hard seasons. She also embraces the Japanese philosophy of Ikigai, suggesting the meeting point between what you love, what you’re good at, what the world needs, and what can sustain you. When those elements come together, work no longer feels like survival.
For every woman reading this: your path may twist and turn. There may be pauses, pivots, and brave new beginnings. But if you stay connected to your values and care for your inner world, you won’t just build a career.
You’ll turn life into living.

When it comes to selling your home, presentation can make a significant difference. In today’s property market, buyers often form their first impression before they even step through the front door- many will first encounter your property through online photos or drive past it from the street. Ensuring your home is presented at its very best can greatly influence buyer interest, competition and ultimately the final sale price.
Taking the time to properly prepare a property for sale doesn’t necessarily require a complete renovation. Often, simple improvements and thoughtful styling can transform how a home feels and how buyers connect with it.
The Power of Property Styling
Property styling, often referred to as staging, has become an increasingly popular strategy when preparing a home for sale. Styling focuses on creating an environment that feels welcoming, modern and easy for potential buyers to imagine themselves living in.
Styling can take several forms depending on the property and the seller’s needs. In many cases, it may involve working with your existing furniture and décor - rearranging rooms, removing unnecessary pieces and introducing a few updated styling elements to refresh the space. This might include new cushions, artwork, lighting or soft furnishings that enhance the overall feel of the home.
For vacant properties, or those where a complete transformation is beneficial, full staging can be arranged. This involves installing quality furniture and decorative pieces throughout the home to create a cohesive and appealing look. Professionally styled homes often photograph better, attract more attention online and leave a stronger impression during inspections.
The goal of styling is not to disguise the home, but rather to highlight its best features and help buyers visualise how the space can be lived in and enjoyed.
Declutter and Simplify
One of the most effective and affordable ways to prepare a home for sale is decluttering. Over time, homes naturally accumulate personal belongings, decorative items and furniture that can make spaces feel smaller or busier than they actually are.
By removing excess items and simplifying the presentation, rooms appear larger, brighter and more inviting. This also allows buyers to focus on the features of the property rather than the belongings within it.
It can also be helpful to minimise highly personal items such as family photographs or collections. While these are meaningful to the homeowner, neutral spaces make it easier for buyers to imagine their own lives and furnishings in the home.
Street Appeal Matters
While interior presentation is essential, the exterior of your property is just as important. The moment buyers arrive at a home, they are already forming opinions about what they expect to find inside.
Improving street appeal does not need to be expensive, but it should be thoughtful. Simple tasks such as mowing the lawn, trimming hedges, removing weeds and pressure cleaning paths or driveways can instantly improve how a property looks from the street.
Adding fresh mulch to garden beds, placing a few well-positioned plants near the entrance, or even giving the front door a fresh coat of paint can create a welcoming and polished appearance. These small improvements help set the tone for the rest of the inspection and can significantly influence a buyer’s first impression.
Light, Space and Atmosphere
Lighting plays a key role in how a home is perceived. Bright, airy spaces feel larger and more inviting. Opening curtains and blinds to maximise natural light is a simple but effective step when preparing for inspections or photography.
Ensuring all light fittings are clean and working properly also helps present the home at its best. In some cases, updating outdated light fittings can provide a quick and affordable improvement to a room.
Small touches such as fresh flowers, greenery or subtle decorative pieces can also help create warmth and atmosphere, making the property feel more like a home.
A Small Investment for a Stronger Result
Preparing a property for sale does require time and attention, and occasionally a modest financial investment. However, the benefits can be substantial. Well-presented homes often attract more buyers, generate stronger competition and ultimately achieve better sale results.
By focusing on presentation, styling and street appeal, sellers can ensure their property stands out in the market and captures the attention of buyers from the very first glance.
In popular lifestyle destinations such as Airlie Beach, where buyers are often drawn to the overall lifestyle as much as the property itself, thoughtful presentation can help showcase not just the home, but the lifestyle it offers.
Ultimately, great presentation helps buyers see the full potential of a property - turning a house into a place they can truly imagine calling home.

I’ve always been interested in how people turn ideas into action, especially in regional communities where innovation is rarely theoretical. It’s practical, it’s necessary, and it’s often happening quietly in the background. That way of thinking sits at the core of my role as Manager of Greater Whitsunday Innovation.
Greater Whitsunday Innovation sits at the intersection of innovation and digital capability, two lenses that are often treated as the same thing but are quite different. Innovation has always existed in our region. You see it in agriculture, mining, small business, and community organisations, where people adapt to weather, distance, limited services, and constant change. Waiting for perfect conditions or external solutions is rarely an option. People solve problems because life and work have to keep moving.
Digital capability is increasingly part of that picture. It is not the whole story, but it is now essential infrastructure. Businesses rely on it to operate, communicate, make decisions, and respond to change. Through GWI, my focus has been on making digital tools feel practical and achievable. As I often say, we are not trying to turn people into tech experts. We are helping people feel confident enough to use what’s available to them. That confidence opens doors.
The programs delivered through Greater Whitsunday Innovation are designed around that idea. Digital confidence workshops, AI understanding sessions, innovation conversations, youth exploration, and creative digital activities are all built to be relevant, accessible, and grounded in real needs. Participants leave with practical digital skills, stronger business confidence, and a clearer understanding of how technology can support their work.
Learning happens not just through programs, but through space. GWI provides flexible environments for workshops, co-working, meetings, and creative experimentation, where ideas can be explored without pressure and conversations can continue beyond the session itself.
Leading this work is never a solo effort. While I hold responsibility for direction and outcomes, collaboration is essential, particularly with a small team. GWI works closely with industry, education providers, government, and specialist delivery partners who bring expertise, credibility, and local insight. That work is supported by our Project Officer, Zoe Knight, who helps deliver programs and connect people with opportunities across the region.
One of the key moments for 2026 is Tech Verge, taking place on 28–29 May at Ocean International as part of Queensland Small Business Month. Tech Verge brings together business owners, digital specialists, and future-focused thinkers for two days of shared learning, practical insight, and honest conversation about what the future looks like for our region. It reflects what GWI is about: creating space for ideas to connect and momentum to build.
My work is often described through a women in tech lens, but for me it is really about creating environments where women, and the wider community, feel comfortable participating in conversations about innovation, business, and technology. That work has been recognised through being named a finalist for a Women in Tech award and a regional community finalist for the Percy Foundation Award, but the most meaningful moments are always the quieter ones. When someone stays back to ask a question. When confidence shifts.
At its heart, innovation is about people. Most days at Greater Whitsunday Innovation start with a coffee and a conversation, and that’s often where ideas turn into action. When people feel supported, connected, and capable, progress follows. That’s what we’re building toward, one conversation at a time.

In 2026, Payne Print & Sign will mark an extraordinary milestone of 50 years in business, celebrating half a century of craftsmanship, resilience, and unwavering commitment to the Mackay community. What began as a humble family dream has grown into one of the region’s most respected print and signage businesses, built on hard work, loyalty, and a deep belief in doing things properly.
The Payne story in Mackay began well before the business itself. In 1970, Tom and Grace Payne moved their young family from Toowoomba to Mackay, drawn by opportunity and a desire to build a future in a growing regional centre. Tom took up work with a local printing company, honing his craft while quietly nurturing a bigger vision.
That vision became reality in 1976, when Tom and Grace established Payne Print, working alongside two family members. The early years were demanding, filled with long hours, modest returns, and relentless dedication, but momentum soon followed. By the early 1980s, all four Payne siblings, Kerry, Karen, Lyn, and John, had joined the business, and additional staff were required to keep pace with growing demand.
Growth came not just from skill, but from courage. Tom and Grace personally travelled west of Mackay, introducing Payne Print’s services to mining companies at a time when the region’s resource sector was beginning to boom. Their hands-on approach paid off. By 1986, the business had expanded to a team of 12, requiring the purchase of larger premises to support its future.
The turn of the millennium brought further expansion, with mining contracts flowing in and investment in new machinery and staff becoming essential. Then, in 2008, disaster struck when the Turner Street factory was devastated by flooding. True to the Payne spirit, the business rebuilt, emerging stronger, with new equipment and renewed determination.
Around 2010, Tom stepped into retirement, entrusting the business he built with such care to his family and loyal employees. That trust proved well placed. Payne Print continued to thrive, guided by the values Tom instilled from day one of honesty, craftsmanship, and exceptional service.
Community has always been central to the Payne ethos. The business has long supported charities, sporting clubs, and local organisations, a commitment recognised in 2016 when Payne Print won the Resource Industry Network Award for Connecting with the Community.
In 2018, the business took another significant step forward, expanding into signage and formally becoming Payne Print & Sign. The move allowed the company to offer complete print and signage solutions, combining traditional expertise with modern digital and large-format capabilities, a decision that has proven pivotal to its continued success.
From Tom’s earliest days, working with little more than a second-hand guillotine and a Platen Letterpress machine, to today’s state-of-the-art operation, quality has never been compromised. Stories still circulate of Tom working through the night to meet a deadline, a standard of excellence that remains deeply ingrained in the business today.
Now, approaching its 50th year, Payne Print & Sign employs 28 dedicated staff, servicing clients across Mackay, the Whitsundays, and the Coalfields. Many of the company’s earliest clients, particularly within the mining sector, remain loyal supporters, a testament to relationships built on trust and reliability.
Though Tom, Grace, and John have since passed, their legacy lives on in every project completed, every client relationship maintained, and every employee who carries their vision forward. They would be immensely proud of what Payne Print & Sign has become.
As the business looks ahead to the next chapter, one thing remains unchanged: Payne Print & Sign is, at its heart, a family business, grounded in tradition, driven by innovation, and deeply connected to the community it has proudly served for five decades.
Here’s to 50 years of print, people, and pride and many more to come.

The Belle Property Whitsundays Story
Over the past 12 months, Stephanie McWhirter and her team at Belle Property Whitsundays have experienced a year of tremendous momentum, one marked by organic growth, strong community connection, and a shared sense of purpose that continues to define their success.
The business has gone from strength to strength, with the rental portfolio growing organically to nearly 100 properties, adding a new dimension to what was already a vibrant and high-performing team. Stephanie attributes this success not just to strategy or numbers, but to culture, which is the heart and soul of the Belle Whitsundays office.
“I’m so proud of the culture we’re creating,” Stephanie shares. “We’ve built this team around trust, consistency, and care. I’m so thankful to our community and clients who choose to work with us, they’re the reason we’re able to do what we love every day.”
For Stephanie, real estate isn’t complicated when you focus on what truly matters. Her philosophy is refreshingly simple:
“Real estate doesn’t have to be hard. If you’re consistent, tell the truth, and do what you say you’re going to do, you can have a wonderful, exciting, and rewarding career.”
Stephanie had dreamed of leadership and business ownership for a long time. The reality, she says, has been even better than she imagined. Leadership, for her, isn’t about titles or accolades it’s about people.
“A great leader steps back when things are going well and steps forward when there’s conflict. If you’re lucky enough to be in a position to help others achieve their goals, remember that people are often far more capable and valuable than you think.”
That belief is reflected in her dynamic and supportive team. Each member contributes their own strengths, united by a shared ambition to grow, achieve, and inspire. She also wishes to acknowledge and thank her fiancé and biggest supporter, Adam Webster, whose unwavering belief and encouragement have been a constant source of strength throughout the journey. As they look ahead, the Belle Property Whitsundays team remains focused on their vision: to be the leading real estate office in the region, welcoming more people along for the exciting journey ahead.

The key to a gorgeous, liveable backyard often begins with nailing the aesthetic elements. But the real secret to unlocking its full potential lies in creating zones, layers, and experiences that invite you to relax, reconnect with nature, and make the most of every square metre.
In With the New
Latest garden trends favour softness, natural flow, and comfort, moving away from strict minimalism. Taking its place is soft modernism, a fusion of structured elements with plant movement and texture to create soulful, inviting outdoor spaces.
To achieve this feel in your own backyard:
Zone Your Space for Purpose & Flow
Rather than having one big, undefined plot, divide your backyard into distinct areas; lounge, dining, play, garden nook, etc. Use changes in flooring (decking, gravel, grass), planters, or pergolas to visually separate zones without building walls, adding function while also making your backyard feel larger and smarter.
Add Ambient Lighting
String lights, lanterns, or subtle LED path lighting can transform the mood after sunset. Good lighting highlights key features and extends the usability of your backyard well into the evening.
Incorporate Water Features
A small fountain, bubbling pot, or pond serves as a background soundtrack, visual element, and stress reliever all rolled into one, setting a relaxing undertone to any gathering.
Embrace Sustainable & Natural Elements
Use drought-tolerant natives, recycled materials, and permeable pavers to support sustainability without sacrificing design. Loosen the reins on structure to create a more biodiverse, lively space.
Comfortable Outdoor Living
Think of your backyard as an extension of your home. Add comfy loungers, a fire pit gathering area, or a dining nook under shade sails or a pergola. Mix furniture materials for visual depth, and include soft textiles that withstand the weather.
Vertical Greenery
Use walls, trellises, or hanging planters to maximise green without eating up floor space—great for smaller yards or creating privacy screens.
Incorporate these tips to stay ahead of the curve, with a backyard that not only appears stunning and organised, but genuinely is.
