One of North Queensland’s true drawcards is its stunning coastline, dotted with secluded bays, coral reefs, and winding rivers just waiting to be explored. With ABCNQ, you can.
More than 22 years ago, Jason Robinson became Townsville’s first BoatSafe-approved provider. His brainchild, ABCNQ—short for Anything Boating Camping North Queensland—has since been the region’s go-to for boat and jetski licensing, while also offering charters and a wide range of boating and camping accessories.
Today, Jason and his partner Peta, who also operates The Jobshop delivering first aid training and event support, run the operation together. With more than 30 years of combined military and civilian maritime experience, they continue to deliverer accessible, safety-driven courses for everyone from first-time skippers to seasoned mariners.
ABCNQ specialises in boat and or jetski licences, combined licences, Coxswain Grade 3, and marine radio courses. Every program includes online theory training, a closed-book exam, hands-on practical sessions, and a final assessment on the water. “If there’s a suitable body of water and people that need it, we can get in it and we can make it happen,” Jason says. That commitment has taken the team everywhere from Mackay to Cape York, with thousands of students trained along the way.
“Boating is one of the skills that spans every walk of life,” said Jason.
“You’ve got people with a ten-foot tinny and your million-dollar man with the 80-foot boat—it literally spans everyone.”
Jason’s own path into marine education began in Army water transport, where he gained hands-on experience operating small boats and landing craft after his deployment to East Timor in 1999—one of Australias largest deployments since the Vietnam war at the time. After a motorbike accident reduced his medical status, he transitioned into civilian licensing, applying his military skills in a new context.
For Jason, ABCNQ was a way to share his extensive boating knowledge and, in turn, help people access the region’s hidden treasures. “We’ve got some absolutely amazing spots up here that most people miss out on without a boat licence,” he said. “We’re out there on the reef, fishing, or exploring places like Zoe Bay at Hinchinbrook—million-dollar locations you just can’t reach any other way. We get people out there and make those experiences possible."
These days, Jason rarely steps onto a boat without his newest companion, Teo: a four-month-old Labrador and trainee assistance dog. “The students love having him there. He comes out on the boat. Any excuse to get in the water, he’s there,” Jason laughs.
But Teo’s presence is more than adorable enthusiasm. After the loss of their previous dog Loki from old age and Jasons mental health battles from his previous employment, Jason began exploring support options. That’s when he connected with the Young Diggers Dog Squad, a national program helping veterans and first responders train their own assistance dogs.
“Young Diggers were just super helpful,” he says. “It definitely decreased my anxiety, and it’s a chance for me to help educate the public that there’s more to service dogs than just guide dogs.”
Jason joined the Dog Squad as a rookie handler in September. Since then, Teo has passed his suitability assessment and begun group sessions, exposure training, and preparation for his upcoming learner’s assessment. “He’s literally spends 24/7 with us,” Jason says. “He’s managed to ruin all my old rules about dogs staying outside.”
As ABCNQ continues teaching safe boating across the region, Jason hopes locals will also consider supporting the organisation that supports him.

Jesse Spina, owner, director, and electrician, has been running SpinFX NQ for over six years, establishing the business as a trusted provider of solar, electrical, and air-conditioning solutions across North Queensland. His passion for the trade and commitment to community are central to the business, along with the occasional support of his two loyal canine companions, Luna and Luigi.
Starting SpinFX NQ in July 2019, Jesse says, “After a short period of subcontracting to other businesses, I decided to step out and start completing my own jobs — firstly, advertising hydro cleans, which was quite a hit! From hydro cleaning came lighting and power point installs, then onto completing my air-conditioning installer licence.”
As demand grew, Jesse expanded his team and, in 2024, rebranded the business to SpinFX NQ. The company recently relocated to 1/102 Herbert Street, where clients can explore the new showroom. “I made it a priority to provide electrical services to my community as well as remote areas like Georgetown and Croydon,” he explains.
That same spirit of connection extends to the workplace, where Luna and Luigi are regular visitors, "The staff love having them around, and when they meet our clients, the pups soak up every bit of attention they can get” Jesse says.
SpinFX NQ’s reputation continues to grow, with nominations for Master Electrician of the Year North QLD, Project of the Year, and Small Business of the Year North QLD. Jesse attributes much of his work ethic to lessons learned from his parents. “The way they treat clients and staff truly resembles how I conduct myself in business,” he says.
He also places strong value on team culture and training. “It’s about creating an environment where everyone feels respected and supported. When you invest in your team, it naturally leads to better collaboration and loyalty.”
After long days or weeks away, Jesse finds balance at home with his pups. “They remind me to slow down, switch off, and recharge,” he says. Their calming presence — along with their occasional mischief — helps keep things light amid the challenges of running a business.
Looking ahead, Jesse is proud of how far SpinFX NQ has come and remains focused on growth and community service. “I’m very happy with where my business is now. I’ve come so far in what feels like a short amount of time,” he says. For Jesse and his ever-supportive team members, four-legged or otherwise, delivering dependable, high-quality solutions will always remain the priority.

Serving mining and engineering firms across Mackay and the Bowen Basin, Advanced Cutting Solutions (ACS Engineering) delivers precision fabrication, coded welding, and CNC profile cutting on virtually any material. Whatever the cutting or fabrication need, ACS has the solution.
Reflecting on his early days at Swift Engineering, Justin a trade qualified Boilermaker and Trade teacher said: “CNC processing is almost like a trade in its self, It will have you thinking outside the box with innovative and sometimes challenging ways to get a result, it was this same challenge that inspired us (Justin and wife Leah a Chef ) to look for something for ourselves, which lead us to buy into ACS Engineering back in 2008”
Since then, ACS has grown into a full-service engineering and fabrication workshop, recognized for high quality Fabrication, CNC processing using waterjet, oxy, high-definition plasma, and CO₂ laser cutting, Office Manager Leah Fraser recalls:
“When we first started at ACS, we only had a Waterjet Cutting Machine, a few hand tools, no stock material and no job tracking system.
“Along with our profile cutting services we also offer: Small, Medium and Large Fabrication, Submerged Arc welding, TIG welding, Pressing and simple Machining along with a vast array of materials and a world-class job tracking system.”
Even the company mascot, Archie the Schnauzer, has become a local legend since joining in 2012, earning a cult following from customers and couriers alike. Archie is apparently, "quick to train any unsuspecting customer, courier or sales rep as he darts between their legs positioning himself for a lower back scratch rewarding his human servant by dancing on the spot.”
“Archie has attracted a following with customers and couriers, even going off route to drop-in just to give Archie a pat and a scratch,” Leah laughs.
ACS has achieved notable milestones, including supplying a full set of Underground Spills in under eight weeks and developing a deep bore camera to inspect underground mine sites after an underground explosion, this was the first of its kind globally. ACS also won a Safety Innovation Award for a device used at Saraji Washplant back in 2012.
Justin explains their Unique service:
A large majority of the time our customers will have a problem to solve and we here at ACS are able to design and help them innovate something that is fit for purpose with safety at the forefront of any design and then proceed to full manufacture of the item.
“Our new Innovative 3D printer is operated by our wizz Rose, who turns any wild idea (and there are many) into a fully rendered model in just minutes.”
Looking ahead, ACS remains committed to innovation, growth and training, with Leah noting:
“We have just employed a new staff member (Sean Melvin) in our office to assist our workshop “Super”visor Evan. Sean has been an injection of enthusiasm and has floated some grand ideas, to further support our local engineering business’.
“Sean has a background in underground Overhauls along with washplant experience, so I would expect our workload to increase with the support of the current overhaul companies throughout Mackay and the Bowen Basin.”
“We are always looking for good people who will be appreciated and rewarded. If you are a fabricator looking to work on a diverse range of jobs ACS Engineering wants you, we will train you where you need training, this might include TIG welding, CNC waterjet, Laser, Plasma, Oxy cutting, submerged Arc Welding, pressing and forming you name it, we do it”

If you’ve ever strolled past the Fat Frog Beach Café and spotted an adorable brown bundle of curls wagging her tail at passersby, chances are you’ve already met Lucé Italian for light, the resident ray of sunshine in owner Naomi McKinnon’s life.
Lucé, a seven-month-old Lagotto Romagnolo has been stealing hearts since she arrived from a breeder in Victoria at just eight weeks old.
“She’s gone from being a crazy naughty puppy to a fairly settled older puppy,” Naomi laughed. “Thank goodness!”
The name Lucé carries deep meaning. After losing both of her beloved dogs last year, Naomi wanted something that symbolised new beginnings.
While she’s not a full-time employee at Fat Frog just yet, Lucé occasionally visits the café, where she’s promptly spoiled by regulars.
True to her breed’s truffle-hunting roots, Lucé’s nose is always to the ground, sniffing out new adventures. Her favourite pastime? Running like a maniac on the beach Naomi says.
Lucé loves the beach which makes Fat Frog Beach Café the perfect home for her. The café situated across the road from Cannonvale Beach, means not only can Lucé feel the wind in her fur but patrons at Fat Frog get that unbeatable ocean view with their beloved coffee, great food, and community connection.
From day one, Naomi envisioned Fat Frog Beach Café to become a community space that feels like home.
“I've always wanted it to be a place for the community, a place for that's relaxed, happy, customer service focused,” said Naomi.
“We have a lot of every day regular customers, and we actually get to engage with them on a personal level.”
“Not only know their names, but we know what their coffee order is, and what their preferences are with their food.”
That personal touch has paid off. Fat Frog Beach Café has grown into a destination café, drawing both locals and travellers looking for a dose of sunshine and conversation. “People come here because they know exactly what they’re going to get,” said Naomi.
“I love it as much today as I did when I first opened. It’s a joy to come to work every day.”

There are three types of super fund: Industry Funds, Retail Funds and Self-Managed Super Funds (SMSF’s). It’s not like one type is better than the other, it’s which one suits your stage of life, current financial situation and where you’re headed financially in the future.
Industry Super funds are where most people start out when joining the workforce. Over the last 10 years, the government have forced those with higher fees and lower returns to amalgamate with better options and we’re down to about 60 Australia wide nowadays. The biggest funds like Aussie Super, ART and HostPlus are reasonably well run and offer decent returns with competitive fees. Many financial planners use these where appropriate, which is often for lower balance clients earlier in their working life where the person doesn’t want much choice and control of how their money is invested. These are a pooled investment structure with other members and generally offer some basic personal insurances for Death, Total & Permanent Disability and maybe Income Protection.
Retail super funds, as the name suggests, are where you chose to buy a super fund from a product provider. This is usually done with the advice of a Financial Planner who has assessed your financial position and goals to help make the choice for your situation. Retail funds range from very old products that should be upgraded to new modern super Wrap style accounts. These products can Wrap around a huge choice of investments and insurance products and underlying investments are held individually in your account rather than pooled. The largest providers here are the big banks like Macquarie or Colonial First State or BT. These funds usually suit larger balances and those who want more control over their investments and particularly young families that need a full suite of customised personal insurances that work in with their super.
SMSF’s are where you pay a firm to set you up your own personal super fund and do the administration and tax work each year. These are often set up and administered by accountants and there are higher fees that come with this. Generally, they only suit either very high balances over $1,000,000 or people whose situation warrants ultimate investment choice. These are the only style of super product that allow direct property investment. This can be suitable for self-employed people who own their business premises or very high balance clients who can buy a direct property and still have enough left in super to remain diversified across shares, fixed interest and cash.
With so much choice it all comes down to your personal situation and what you need from a super fund. Having a SMSF might sound trendy at the BBQ but in the wrong situation it can be a disastrous choice for your financial future.
If you think you could benefit from a discussion with a Financial Planner, give us a call on 49467359 of visit www.eclipsefp.com.au There’s no obligation, the first meeting is free and all fees are spelled out clearly in advance.

Based in Mackay, this heavy machinery service and parts supplier has grown to house one of the largest inventories in the region. Their reputation has been built on hands-on knowledge, technical expertise, and a commitment to delivering reliable, long-term solutions.
Now, EHS is confidently stepping onto the global stage of the mining, civil, and construction industries with a brand identity that matches the scale, capability, and integrity they have built over the years.
At EHS, it is not unusual for the founder himself to answer the phone. Chris is not your average business owner; he's a former Diesel Fitter with an exceptional memory for part numbers and is just as comfortable solving complex business challenges as he is working on the workshop floor. His deep industry knowledge, combined with a team of like-minded experts, has shaped a company that prioritises honest advice and practical solutions over quick sales.
Chris began his career on the tools, diagnosing issues, stripping down machines, rebuilding engines, and doing whatever it took to keep heavy equipment running. That boots-on-the-ground experience gave him a practical understanding of the industry, which remains central to how EHS operates today. Although the business has grown significantly in size and capability, it has never lost that grounded approach. Every service, solution, and decision is guided by real-world insight and a genuine respect for the people who rely on their machines to get the job done.
EHS began as a labour hire business, which gave Chris valuable insight into the everyday challenges faced by machinery owners. It became clear that speed, reliability, and cost-effective solutions were top priorities. When a client offered to sell him a machine, it sparked a new direction for the business: dismantling. This shift allowed EHS to offer more affordable components without compromising on quality. It also meant faster turnaround times, especially on parts from leading brands such as Caterpillar, Komatsu, Hitachi, and Liebherr. Today, EHS provides end-to-end support, starting with diagnostic assessments that help identify the most effective and long-lasting fix. Their advice is always grounded in integrity, and when a replacement part isn't necessary, they'll recommend a more practical option.
From quick fixes to complete machine rebuilds, every job is handled with care and precision. Their workshop is designed to deliver tailored solutions that keep machines operating and projects progressing.
A notable feature of the EHS offering is their Service Exchange Program. It provides a smarter, faster alternative to purchasing new parts. Rather than waiting for components to be repaired, customers can access a ready-to-install reconditioned unit from the EHS exchange stock. The used component is then rebuilt and returned to the pool, making the process seamless and efficient. This model is not only cost-effective but also reduces downtime, minimises waste, and extends the lifecycle of high-quality parts. Each unit in the program is carefully selected, rebuilt to specification, thoroughly tested, and backed by EHS's stringent quality assurance standards. What Chris has built is far more than a parts business. He has created a comprehensive operation that supports the entire lifecycle of heavy equipment. The company's latest branding reflects this scale. Their campaign features a globe made entirely from parts sourced from their yard, a striking visual that represents the breadth of their reach and capability. EHS is not just stepping into international markets. EHS isn't just participating on the global stage; they're earning their place on it.
Despite their growth, EHS remains closely connected to their roots. The business values people above all, whether it is the clients they serve, the community they belong to, or the employees they've brought on board. EHS has remained selectively lean to ensure the right people are in the right roles, and to foster a culture of passion, precision, and trust. They also continue to support the local community through regular contributions to schools, sponsorships, and donations. EHS is a business with global reach but maintains its local heart.
The rebrand isn't just about appearances; it's about making sure the identity reflects the capability, consistency, and standard EHS brings to the table every single day. Their team genuinely cares, and it shows in every conversation and every solution. Built with pride and driven by a deep respect for the industry, EHS continues to grow while staying true to the values that shaped its beginnings.

Rebecca Cooper is a familiar name in Mackay’s Northern Beaches. She is a woman of kindness and vision, driven by a single purpose: to connect her community. Through her passion and dedication, she has transformed her corner of the region into a place where everyone feels they truly belong.
Rebecca is the founder and driving force behind the Northern Beaches Community Network Mackay, an initiative supported by Mackay Regional Council’s Community Impact Grant. But more than an organiser, she is a catalyst for change – someone who saw a need for connection and decided to create it.
Her impact was formally recognised earlier this year when she was named the 2025 Mackay Regional Council Australia Day Citizen of the Year. For Rebecca, the honour was humbling. And for those who know her, it was inevitable.
Mackay Mayor Greg Williamson said, “By bringing people together through fun, inclusive activities, Rebecca has nurtured a spirit of connection and support, helping to foster a vibrant, resilient and caring community that continues to thrive as the Mackay Northern Beaches area grows.
“Her work has helped to unite people from all walks of life, creating a space where everyone feels welcomed and supported.”
For Rebecca, being a changemaker is at the core of her work.
“To me, being a changemaker means not only having the vision for the change you believe is needed, but also the courage to put that vision into action and inspire others to join the journey towards a common goal, and enjoying the process along the way,” she said.
“I was raised to believe that if you’re not happy with the way something is – or you see a gap – you have a responsibility to step up, be the change that’s needed, or advocate for it, and become the catalyst that sparks transformation.
“Being a changemaker also means having a belief in the power of little being great.”
Her initiatives have taken many forms, through free programs for parents, creative workshops for arts and crochet enthusiasts, and activities that nurture both mental and physical health, such as yoga and mindfulness. Each initiative reflects Rebecca’s belief that wellbeing and connection should be accessible to all.
“What drives me as a changemaker is the desire to lay the foundations for the kind of community I want my children to grow up in,” she said. “A community where people feel connected, with a true sense of belonging, joy, and appreciation for nature and for each other and being active.”
“I want to live in a world where people truly look each other in the eyes, share experiences, live deeply, and learn from one another.”
“Right now, we’re seeing growing disconnection, social isolation, and poorer mental, physical, and social health, with technology often taking over. My work is about being a bridge – addressing those gaps and nurturing people through inspired community-led action.”
Her story is remarkable in its simplicity, and her passion for wellbeing, inclusivity, and happiness has blossomed into a network that enriches the lives of countless residents.
She credits much of her success, to those around her.
“A highlight of changemaking is the people you meet along the way, some who have now become my closest friends. Seeing people who were once strangers but now are truly part of the community,” she added.
In the Northern Beaches, Rebecca Cooper is not only a community advocate, but a symbol of what’s possible when kindness meets determination. She reminds us that true change rarely begins with grand gestures, but with one person brave enough to start the conversation.

In the competitive world of commercial and industrial construction, businesses demand more than just a builder – they need a partner who understands their vision, overcomes obstacles, and delivers results that endure.
That’s exactly what CiteCon Pty Ltd brings to the table.
As recognised project specialists, CiteCon has built a reputation for getting the job done – and done well. With proven expertise across design and construction, the company delivers modern, adaptable facilities tailored to the unique needs of each client. From large-scale industrial workshops to integrated office spaces, CiteCon combines technical skill, innovative solutions, and a determined, hands-on approach that consistently exceeds expectations.
That reputation was reinforced at the 2025 Mackay & Whitsunday Master Builders Awards, where CiteCon secured two prestigious titles: Commercial / Industrial Building from $5 million up to $15 million for the MI Scaffold Industrial Warehouse in Paget, and Commercial Refurbishment / Renovation up to $5 million for Penske Australia, also in Paget.
The MI Scaffold project in particular showcased CiteCon’s ability to thrive under pressure. Facing regional labour shortages, more than 40 days of wet weather, and even a site burglary, the team still delivered the multi-million-dollar facility on time and within budget. By taking specialist work such as concrete polishing in-house and maintaining open communication with the client throughout, CiteCon ensured every challenge was met without compromise.
For businesses seeking a construction partner who brings grit, precision, and proven results, CiteCon stands as a company that not only meets expectations – but raises the bar for what construction delivery should be.

Now, Paige’s impact is set to be recognised on an even bigger stage – she has been nominated for the Queensland Master Builders Awards, to be held later this year in October, where she will stand among the state’s best in the industry.

Dominating the construction industry is Fergus Builders, multi-award-winning builders who have shaped some of the region’s most well-known buildings for over 40 years. Since 1983, the company has grown into one of the region’s most sought-after builders across residential, commercial, industrial, and community projects. Known for combining craftsmanship, innovation, and community focus, Fergus Builders has earned a reputation for quality and reliability across the state.
The company’s commitment to excellence was once again recognised at the 2025 Master Builders Mackay & Whitsunday Housing & Construction Awards, where Fergus Builders took home seven awards across multiple categories.
Fergus Builders’ award wins highlight both the team’s skill and the company’s values.
Director and Projects Manager Adam Wright said, “We pride ourselves on our hard work and delivering the best possible end result for our clients.”
“Each award is as special as the other, whether its delivering a well needed community asset such as the Airlie Beach Fire Station or building Mackay’s first ALDI, they are all great projects to be involved with.”
The company’s projects span homes, schools, fire stations, and retail facilities. The Holy Spirit College INTAD building in particular, was awarded Best Education Facility, which stood out for its exceptional quality.
Adam says, “The level of finish of this project really stood out along with the facility itself.”
“One of the best things about building is delivering these types of projects, especially for the community in which you live. It is very rewarding knowing you have helped delivered a vital community service that will serve the community for years to come.”
In residential design, Fergus Builders has also been recognised. The Mayfair display home and Aria individual home exemplify the company’s balance of style, functionality, and affordability.
It’s no doubt that collaboration is central to Fergus Builders’ success.
“Great projects involve great clients, builders, subbies and suppliers. It really is a team effort,” Adam explains.
“Our level of detail and commitment to getting the project completed to the highest possible quality is our main focus.

Visionary design and construction excellence were in the spotlight at the 2025 Mackay & Whitsunday Housing & Construction Awards, held at the Mantra Mackay on 9 August.
After dominating last year, Fergus Builders once again set the pace, walking away with seven awards — the highest number for any builder across Queensland so far in 2025. Their work spanned both commercial and residential categories. Standouts included best Education Facilities over $10 million for the new Holy Spirit College INTAD Building, Community Service Facilities for the Airlie Beach Fire Station, and Retail Facilities over $5 million for ALDI Andergrove. The team also delivered in residential, claiming best Display Home from $600,000 up to $800,000 for the Mayfair, and Individual Home from $400,000 up to $550,000 for the inviting family home Aria. Fergus also took home wins for Community Accommodation with the Shute Harbour Units, and Commercial Fitout up to $5 million for the GHD Mackay office.
CiteCon also made its mark, securing three major awards. Paige Gardner was recognised with the Women in Building Award for her dedication to mentoring and commitment to a more diverse and inclusive industry. The company’s technical strength shone through in two commercial categories: best Commercial Refurbishment/Renovation up to $5 million for the Penske Australia fitout in Paget, and best Commercial/Industrial Building from $5 million up to $15 million for the MI Scaffold Industrial Warehouse.
Meanwhile, Cotter Builders impressed in residential design, taking home multiple honours for their craftsmanship and eye for detail. The team won Best Residential Kitchen for the stylish Villa Athena at Racecourse, and Best Individual Home from $700,000 up to $850,000 for the same property. They also claimed Home Renovation Project up to $300,000 for their work on Sana House in West Mackay.
Master Builders Regional Manager Brad Dobie said this year’s winners reflected both skill and resilience.
“From beautifully crafted homes and clever renovations to vital infrastructure and community spaces delivered under pressure, our members have shown what’s possible when passion meets professionalism,” he said.
The extensive display of building excellence showcased at the awards has demonstrated the breadth of talent shaping the Mackay and Whitsunday region — from innovative community infrastructure to bespoke homes and industry-leading workplaces — setting a benchmark for construction excellence in 2025.
Red Emperor Constructions, headquartered in Cannonvale, has been recognised for excellence in residential construction at the prestigious 2025 Mackay & Whitsunday Housing & Construction Awards, hosted by Master Builders Queensland.
The company received five awards on the evening, including the highly coveted House of the Year title for its standout project, Haven on Hamilton. Alistair Sawers, Owner and Director of Red Emperor Constructions, accepted the honours on behalf of the company, extending sincere gratitude to his dedicated in-house team, trusted trades, Master Builders Queensland, and fellow award recipients.
Held on 9 August at Mantra Mackay, the event was a celebration of industry achievement across the region, with Red Emperor Constructions staff and partners in attendance to mark the occasion.
One of the evening’s highlights was recognition for the recently completed Stage 8C of The Grove, for which Site Manager Iain Karon accepted the award.
Haven on Hamilton, a technically complex and architecturally striking island residence, drew high commendation from judges for its exceptional planning, innovation, and craftsmanship.
The project involved transporting materials to a steep, rocky island site—an engineering and logistical challenge that the Red Emperor Constructions team met with outstanding professionalism and precision.
In their remarks, Master Builders Queensland stated:
"Haven on Hamilton is among the most challenging builds Red Emperor Constructions has undertaken – but the result is spectacular. The team earned high praise for their innovative planning, seamless material logistics from the mainland, and the flawless execution of a truly bespoke home."
The home showcases premium finishes including polished concrete flooring, exposed concrete and cedar ceilings, bespoke timber joinery, and an infinity-edge pool capturing uninterrupted Whitsunday Island views—a true testament to Red Emperor Constructions’ commitment to quality, detail, and architectural excellence.

In just ten years, Cotter Builders has carved a reputation for precision, innovation, and homes that don’t just impress, but win awards.
The Mackay-based husband-and-wife, building designer-builder duo of Michael and Madison Cotter, along with the hard-working team behind them, recently celebrated multiple victories at the Master Builders Mackay Housing and Construction Awards, walking away with three coveted accolades.
While their Sana House renovation took out Best Home Renovation Project up to $300,000, it was their Villa Athena project—Best Individual Home $700,000–$850,000 and Best Residential Kitchen—that stood out even against homes valued up to $5 million. Punching well above its weight, the high-profile build showcased the meticulous attention to detail and innovative design that has made Cotter Builders a household name in the local industry.
“We’re pretty proud of ourselves, and I don’t think we really expected to come away with [the Best Residential Kitchen] award,” Madison says.
“We’re just two very determined, dedicated people that love doing what we do every day. We’ve spent thousands of hours further developing our business and skillsets to deliver the best quality to our clients… which has ultimately seen us grow into a multi-award winning team very quickly.”
The pair started Cotter Builders at just 23, combining their complementary skills—Michael’s builder background and ‘yes man’ attitude, and Madison’s design expertise—into a business now employing nine staff. The business prides itself on designing every home in-house, starting from scratch to meet client needs and ensure no two projects are the same.
“As Mackay’s Custom home builder, our goal is always to challenge ourselves and deliver something unique and fully customised to our clients brief, every time.”
But beyond Cotter Builders ’quality, innovation and awards, its real strength lies in a tight-knit, family-oriented approach.
“We’re a very family-oriented business,” says administrator Tamara Doolan. “We’re constantly supported by [Madison] and [Michael] with flexibility through work or just with general support. They’re honestly the best people.”
Even the Cotters’ young boys get involved, kitted out in little Cotter Builders shirts and tagging along to site visits. Because for Michael, Madison, and the team at Cotter Builders, building homes and building family go hand in hand.

When it comes to protecting homes and families across Queensland, one name continues to stand out as a trusted leader: Geiger Solutions Pty Ltd. Proudly based in the region and backed by a proven reputation for reliability, quality workmanship, and genuine community care, Geiger Solutions has become the go-to company for homeowners looking to secure their property through the Household Resilience Program.
What is the Household Resilience Program?
The Queensland Government’s Household Resilience Program (HRP) is an initiative designed to help homeowners in cyclone-prone areas improve the structural safety of their homes. First introduced in 2018, the program provides eligible homeowners with government funding to cover part of the cost of essential upgrades.
The focus is on strengthening older homes – those built before 1984 – that may not meet current building codes designed for cyclone resistance. By upgrading roofs, windows, doors, and other critical areas, the program helps safeguard families against severe weather while also reducing insurance premiums in some cases.
In simple terms, the Household Resilience Program allows Queenslanders to:
• Access financial support to upgrade and cyclone-proof their homes.
• Improve safety for their families during severe storms and cyclones.
• Potentially lower home insurance costs due to reduced risk.
• Add long-term value and peace of mind to their property.
Why Geiger Solutions?
As a company deeply embedded in the community, Geiger Solutions has built its reputation on trust, transparency, and workmanship that goes above and beyond. With decades of combined experience in roofing, construction, and home resilience, the team understands exactly what is required to meet the program’s strict standards.
Local homeowners choose Geiger Solutions because:
• Proven Expertise: The team specialises in roofing, cyclone upgrades, and structural works that directly align with HRP requirements.
• Government Approved: Geiger Solutions is recognised as a trusted provider under the program, ensuring homeowners are in safe and qualified hands.
• Community Values: As a local business, they care about the safety of their neighbours, treating every project as if it were their own home.
• Guidance and Support: The process of applying for funding can feel overwhelming, but Geiger Solutions assists homeowners every step of the way – from application to completion.
A Track Record of Resilience
Over the past few years, Geiger Solutions has helped countless families strengthen their homes through the Household Resilience Program. From roof replacements and tie-down upgrades to cyclone-rated windows and doors, their projects stand as a testament to the benefits of the scheme.
Many local families who once worried every cyclone season now enjoy peace of mind knowing their homes are safer and stronger. This transformation is thanks in no small part to Geiger Solutions’ commitment to excellence.
A Safer Community, One Home at a Time
Cyclones are an unavoidable part of life in Queensland, but damage and loss don’t have to be. Through the Household Resilience Program – and with the trusted expertise of Geiger Solutions – homeowners can take proactive steps to protect their families and communities.
“We’re proud to be part of a program that not only protects homes but also gives families confidence heading into storm season,” a spokesperson from Geiger Solutions explained. “It’s about building resilience, reducing risk, and keeping our community safe.”
