Whilst the club's genesis dates back to 1925, this landmark occasion is just as much about honouring its strong and thriving present as it is about reflecting on its rich and vibrant past.
With a steadily growing membership of between 350 and 380 individuals, the club is a predominant hub for sport, social connection, and personal growth in the Proserpine community. Whether you are a seasoned veteran of the golf course or a starry-eyed novice, learning how to hold and swing your first golf club, the club prides itself on its welcoming and inclusive atmosphere.
As Golf Professional Roger Vandenberg explains, “The handicap system means anyone can play and be competitive, regardless of their ability.” The recent increase in the maximum handicap for women from 36 to 54 is one of many steps the club has taken to make the sport more inclusive and accessible.
Today, Proserpine Golf Club proudly possesses an 18-hole championship course, complete with beautifully picturesque surroundings of crystalline creeks, rolling cane fields and majestic gum trees.
Due to its modernised irrigation system, the course remains in excellent condition even through dry spells. The club also boasts a practice fairway, putting green, practice nets, and a cutting edge TrackMan training facility where golfers of all levels can fine-tune their swing by utilising state of the art professional grade technology.
Roger, who has had the pleasure of serving as the club's professional for almost a decade, offers everything from individual private lessons to group clinics, including groups for ladies and juniors. He also provides club fitting and equipment repair services. Roger is supported by his associate and aspiring professional golfer, Nathan. Their presence at Proserpine Golf Club has contributed significantly to its growth and sharp improvement in competition standards.
Off the golf course, the on-site Clubhouse provides an energetic social venue, hosting everything from birthdays to weddings, wakes and post-round catch-ups. Recent renovations, including new furniture and abundant parking spaces, have made the golf club even more inviting.
As the centenary edges ever closer, the club takes time to highlight the efforts of its many volunteers, sponsors and long-serving families whose stalwart dedication has helped shape its success. Their work has laid the foundation for what promises to be a memorable centennial celebration and exciting future.
From its friendly atmosphere to its first-class facilities, Proserpine Golf Club stands as a shining beacon of what a community-driven sporting club can become and after a century, the only direction is upwards.
When Dr Julia Evans and Richard Evans founded 852 Press in 2020, they weren’t just launching an independent publishing consultancy — they were building a platform for writers to take control of their own stories.
At its heart, 852 Press is about demystifying the self-publishing process. Through clear, step-by-step education and concierge-style services, Julia and Richard guide authors from initial idea to final product, making the dream of becoming a published writer an achievable reality.
The Minds Behind 852 Press
With a background as an adult education expert, award-winning academic, and extensive experience in national policy advocacy, particularly in small business education, franchising, humanities, and the arts, Dr Julia Evans brings a wealth of experience in helping individuals turn their knowledge into lasting impact. Julia also manages the Whitsundays Chamber of Commerce and Industry and has two books of her own scheduled for release in 2026.
Her husband, Richard Evans, complements this educational foundation with a storytelling pedigree forged in the corridors of power. As a former federal member of parliament and Australia’s notable political crime author, Richard crafts thrillers that lay bare the realities of political life. His ninth novel, Horrible People, launched in 2025 alongside Australia’s federal election, draws directly from his first-hand experience. "These stories aren't imagined from afar," he says. "I've lived them."
Since 2020, Julia and Richard have been working to make publishing with a global reach more accessible and affordable for Australian writers, encouraging and equipping authors to take ownership of their creative journeys without sacrificing quality.
A Concierge Approach to Publishing
852 Press offers more than just advice; it delivers a hands-on, tailored service covering every facet of publishing—manuscript development, cover design, typesetting, marketing, and distribution. But above all, education remains their core mission: equipping writers the knowledge and skills to confidently manage their own publishing future.
"The publishing industry can be tough," Julia says. "Big publishers chase celebrities and top selling authors and rarely look at their ‘slush pile’, while too many predatory services exploit aspiring writers. At the same time, some authors need help elevating their work to a professional standard."
The company’s name, 852 Press, has special significance. It not only captures Richard's personal writing philosophy—eight revisions, five independent readers, and two expert editors—but also honours his tenure as Australia's 852nd federal parliamentarian.
Encouraging Authors Everywhere
From their base in the Whitsundays, Julia and Richard have spent the past three years running free workshops at libraries across the Greater Whitsundays, Townsville, and beyond. Their impact now extends internationally; during a recent world voyage aboard Cunard’s Queen Anne, they delivered 16 writing and publishing workshops to over 1,700 participants. Many attendees have since gone on to start or complete their own writing projects.
“Everyone has a story worth telling,” Richard says. "Whether your life has been marked by extraordinary events or quiet moments of reflection, finding your narrative thread can be transformational."
As Julia puts it, “Many writers are passionate but stuck. They just need the right tools, presented in a way they can understand and apply.” Through 852 Press, the couple’s workshops and services aim to bridge that gap.
Building a Business — and a Life — Together
Running a business as a married team presents its own unique challenges—and opportunities. Julia and Richard are the first to acknowledge that their success lies in respecting each other’s strengths.
“You have to amplify what the other person brings to the table," Julia explains. "Growth happens when you work on projects that energise you both."
Richard agrees. “Having separate workspaces and routines is crucial. You need to maintain your individuality. Plus, sharing household responsibilities and prioritising self-care makes it all sustainable.”
Together, Julia and Richard embody the spirit of collaboration—both in life and in business—working side by side to foster a more accessible and capable publishing world.
Their message to aspiring writers is simple and direct: If not now, when? When are you going to write your story?
McCarthy Panel Works hit the gas once again with its second Auto Ready course and Careers Expo held on April 16, following the success of its inaugural event. Co-owner Andrea McCarthy was eager to bring the initiative back, recognising the vital role hands-on training plays in preparing students for real-world automotive careers.
“When I did it the first time, I would’ve been happy to do it every year.
“It works best with the training, so I was waiting to be able to run it again,” Andrea explained, emphasising her passion for nurturing the next generation of professionals.
The event provided local students with a unique opportunity to explore a broad range of automotive careers, from traditional panel work to cutting-edge roles in electric vehicles and automation. The Auto Ready program, part of MTAQ’s training modules, offered valuable insights, allowing students to gain QCE points while learning about the industry’s many paths.
“The event is only successful if it achieves the objectives set out,” Andrea shared, noting that this year’s expo focused on connecting students with businesses in need of apprentices.
The goal was not only to raise awareness but also to provide opportunities, and it delivered on both fronts.
One standout achievement was securing apprenticeships, including Summer Tonkin’s school-based apprenticeship in panel work at McCarthy Panel Works. The event also significantly raised the business’s profile, attracting local council representatives and government bodies, sparking interest around apprenticeship and work experience opportunities.
“I’m proud to be considered an employer of choice,” Andrea said.
In a region where skilled hands and driven minds keep the wheels of industry turning, McCarthy Panel Works is more than just a business – it’s a launchpad. With the pedal firmly to the metal, they’re steering students toward high-octane futures, proving the road to success is paved panel by panel.
With MADEC
For many Australians living with disability or in care, life is lived on the edge of ‘just enough’. Enough to get by. Enough to pay for essentials. Enough to survive week to week.
But what about joy? What about belonging, adventure, dignity… what about living?
A weekend away with family. Tickets to see a favourite band live. A visit to a distant cultural site or ancestral Country. These are the kinds of experiences that bring meaning and connection – but for many locals living with disability, they remain out of reach due to the financial and logistical challenges involved.
“The NDIS doesn’t cover cost-of-living expenses or leisure travel – only supports that are directly tied to a person’s disability,” explains MADEC CEO Jasmine Lowry.
“For someone living on a disability pension, even a small outing or purchasing a coffee can mean going without something else.”
“That’s why this End of Financial Year, we’re asking the Mackay and Whitsundays community to consider donating — because your support can be the difference between just getting by and truly experiencing life.”
For over 50 years, MADEC has supported the Mackay and Whitsundays community with trusted youth and disability services. As a not-for-profit and public benevolent institution, we turn community donations into real-life impact.
“One young woman we support has a rare and aggressive form of Multiple Sclerosis and had never been on a family holiday,” Jasmine shared.
“But with support from local partners, we were able to send Abby, her son, and her family to the Big 4 at Airlie Beach.
“It might not seem like much to some, but to her it was everything… a moment she dreamed of experiencing before entering palliative care.”
In another moving example of their life-changing support, MADEC provided funding to help a First Nations man fulfil his lifelong wish to find his mother’s grave.
“Andrew’s mother was part of the Stolen Generation,” Jasmine explained.
“We were able to help him reclaim his name, locate her burial site, and we’re now working on the logistics to get him there.
“These aren’t simple trips – there’s significant case management involved – but this means everything to Andrew, so we’re making it happen.”
To continue funding experiences like these, MADEC is calling on the local community to consider making a tax-deductible donation this End of Financial Year.
As a Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR), all donations over $2 are tax-deductible, making it easy to give back as the end of the financial year approaches.
“Workplace giving is another simple way to show your support, but it goes a long way,” Jasmine affirmed.
“Employees can nominate a small amount from each pre-tax pay, with 100% of those funds going directly to people like Abby and Andrew.”
“It helps us plan bigger goals and accomplish long-term dreams.”
Your generosity can help open the door to new experiences, connection, and joy—things we all deserve to share in.

Elisabeth Ribeiro’s journey from Brazil to Australia at the age of 20 is one of resilience, ambition, and a desire to create something truly special for the people around her. Arriving in a new country with little knowledge of the English language, Elisabeth poured her time into her children for thirteen years before discovering her destiny as a business owner. Fast forward to today, she is the proud owner of Deja-Vu, a delightful gift shop café in Mackay that offers so much more than just a place to enjoy tea and coffee.
Deja-Vu is like stepping into another world. With its authentic mix of antiques, gifts, and charming furniture, the shop radiates a homely, welcoming vibe that creates opportunities for people to connect.
“I wanted to give people a nice place, to come sit and have a drink, whether it’s coffee, tea, or to just spend some time relaxing,” says Elisabeth.
“Once you’re here, you feel like you’re in another country.”
And she’s certainly succeeded in creating that atmosphere. In fact, much of her success can be attributed to the support she’s received from the previous owner, Kerri Ross, who ran the business for 21 years.
“She’s been lovely, and I can’t thank her enough for all the help she’s offered to me,” Elisabeth says.
Beyond regular café offerings, Elisabeth has a passion for bringing people together. That’s why she hosts beautiful high teas, which she believes are perfect for celebrating life’s special moments. Whether it's a baby shower, birthday party, or just a moment of indulgence, high tea at Deja-Vu is a celebration of life and community.
“People are always celebrating something, and I love that,” she shares.
Outside of Deja-Vu, Elisabeth is a master of multitasking. She manages her own Airbnb’s while continuing to support her husband's landscaping business – a venture she’s been involved in for over two decades.
Her passion for music runs deep and shines through her children, who excel in drums, piano, and orchestral performances. The Ribeiro family also enjoys camping and exploring new restaurants, fuelling Elisabeth’s love for food and culture.
Elisabeth’s story is one of purpose, joy, and the belief that you can achieve anything with hard work and faith.
“You can do anything…God will give you the strength to do it,” she says, and her journey serves as an inspiring reminder that anything is possible when you follow your passion and stay true to your values.
Whether you're popping in for a coffee, indulging in high tea with friends, or searching for a unique gift, Deja-Vu serves up more than just a cup of nostalgia. It’s a place where every sip feels familiar, yet delightfully new!
What’s a beauty product you can’t live without?
“I don’t wear makeup, but I always have red lipstick. It’s my only makeup,” she laughs.
What’s one word you would use to describe yourself?
“Happy… my friends always say I’m happy!”
What’s your favourite place to visit?
“The Sydney Opera House – It’s just beautiful there.”

A champion of empowerment through professional development, Jo Sainsbury, Founder of ‘Kickass Women,’ believes in embracing challenging and transformative pathways while collaborating with others to successfully reinvent oneself.
“I consider myself as an on-going project and work in progress albeit heading towards my late 50’s and I’m allowed to be both a work in progress and help others grow at the same time,” shared Jo.
“I’m one of those people who still has a healthy appetite for continual self and professional development – for me it’s about what makes you feel the most alive and then creating it.”
Jo sees her current stage in life as an opportunity to flourish and she reflects fondly on all she has achieved in the past both professionally and personally, noting she now plans to prioritise ensuring the rest of her life is the best of her life.
“Most women believe they’re now likely to try new things since they turned 50,” explained Jo.
“This includes a vast number of them starting their own businesses, stepping up to take that promotion or into that leadership role, going to music festivals, becoming the exciting adventurers looking after their fitness and health, going solo travelling, and more so feeling younger than ever today!”
Professional development plays a key role in Jo's measurement of her personal growth. She believes that no matter how vast one’s skillset or knowledge base may be, there’s always room to flourish.
As part of her career, Jo recently completed an 18-month leadership program, which further secured her position within the Site Leadership Team as a Coal Mining Supervisor and equipped her with invaluable tools to create lasting personal and professional changes.
“What I’ve learnt and developed puts a greater emphasis on emotional intelligence and the ability to tap into the experiences of your employees,” Jo noted.
“Heart-centered leadership is more inclusive and compassionate and responsive rather than reactive – in business, heart-centered leadership helps build teams that are more intuitive and emotionally intelligent – and that’s what women leaders are famous for.”
Jo notes there are many examples of women leading in collaboration all around us, benefiting communities, ecosystems, families and loved ones simultaneously.
“When you put your potential, skill and enthusiasm together, possibilities open their doors for you automatically,” added Jo.
“The investment you make in your professional development is a strong investment you make in yourself.”
“So ladies, you may have to lose who you were to find out who you are – chase those dreams, fulfill those goals, and love your age, as you are old enough to know there’s better, young enough not to care, and experienced enough to do it right now.”
What exciting challenge do you have coming up?
“Later this year, I’ll be taking on the Three Capes Trek in Tasmania, an incredible multi-day hike through some of Australia’s most breathtaking coastal landscapes. It’s a personal challenge, but more importantly, it’s an opportunity to raise funds for CQ Rescue. A key figure in the Whitsunday community, Katelyn Collins (Aslett) is a renowned philanthropist and business woman who smashes through barriers, innovates and catapults ideas into a new stratosphere. Completely redefining the way people transit through Whitsunday Coast Airport, Kate introduced a high-tech food offering at Taste Whitsundays and the results have been a game-changer. Meanwhile, her fundraising endeavours have seen her spearhead initiatives and drive campaigns where all she touches turns to magic.
Originally from Townsville, Kate moved to Airlie Beach after meeting her husband, local Kev Collins. Her career shifted when she successfully tendered for the airport cafe, where she has made a lasting impact.
“We've contributed to it becoming one of the prize-winning regional airports in the country over the last couple of years, we are very focused on trying to include as much local produce, with our gift shop and the cafe, we try to use as much local food and products and put a local spin on it,” Kate emphasised.
In Kate's other ventures, she recently received the emerging Queensland Philanthropist of the Year award, which she said was humbling but amazing.
“The main reason I won that award is for several years I've had a not-for-profit business that I started called My Giving Table,” Kate explained.
My Giving Table turns gatherings into fundraisers. Whether it's a birthday, cocktail party, or dinner, hosts can register their event on the platform, set a theme, and send invitations. Instead of gifts, guests donate to a chosen charity or purchase tickets, with all proceeds going directly to the cause.
Between My Giving Table and the Whitsunday Luxe raffle that Kate has put together for the last seven years for Women’s Legal Service, she has raised over half a million dollars for charities and is currently supporting our local Team Whitsundays Dancing CEOs to raise funds for their campaign.
Kate explained how she is now at a stage where she looks to give back to others in the community.
“If you are successful in life, then the way to be more successful is to work out how you can give back to others, because you hit a point that your success and your focus on yourself is only filling so much of the story.”
Alongside this achievement, Kate has also found success with her business, Taste Whitsunday, where they have made remarkable advancements in technology. Their innovations have been so impactful that they have influenced major global companies, including Emirates.
When asked what challenges Kate has faced as a female entrepreneur, she stated that she never puts that hat on, and that she is a business person who doesn’t define herself by her femininity but says that it has actually helped her in many areas of business.
Do you have any female role models in your life?
“Growing up my mother was, because she was in a small business, so I spent my childhood watching my mum, working all kinds of hours and juggling and whilst my mum and dad were in a business together, my mum was really the brains behind it.”
What advice would you offer to other women looking to start their own business or take on leadership roles?
“Be kind to yourself and be fearless and take risks.”

If you ask Dr Ritu Rana how she ended up in Mackay, she’ll tell you it started with a search for sunshine. What she found was more than just warm weather—she found a thriving career, a supportive community, and a life where medicine and motherhood go hand in hand. Today, she’s not just one of Queensland’s leading fertility specialists; she’s also a business powerhouse, balancing family life and a medical empire with grace, determination, and a knack for making the impossible seem effortless.
Dr Rana’s journey is nothing short of extraordinary. Born and trained in India, she met her husband in medical school before moving to the UK for further training. She spent over a decade in England, where she sharpened her expertise in obstetrics and gynaecology, specialising in high-risk pregnancies, advanced laparoscopic surgery, and infertility treatment. Her time at the Leeds Centre of Reproductive Medicine saw her working at the forefront of IVF, helping thousands of couples on their journey to parenthood.
But it wasn’t just her career that shaped her move to Australia. Her middle child suffered from severe eczema, requiring immunosuppressant medication. The family needed a change, and with the UK’s grey skies doing little to help, they set their sights on somewhere warmer. After considering Dubai and India, fate led them to Mackay—thanks to a friend who was relocating there at the same time. It was a leap of faith that paid off, with Mackay quickly feeling like home.
Dr Rana’s path to business ownership wasn’t planned. She initially joined renowned fertility specialist Dr Lance Herron’s practice in 2018, seeking the flexibility of private practice while raising three young children. She took on a part-time role, easing into the business while still focusing on family.
Then, in 2020, everything changed. Dr Herron fell ill, and overnight, she was faced with a decision: close the practice or step up. Without hesitation, she chose the latter, taking over his patients and ensuring continuity of care. It was a baptism by fire, but one she handled with the same precision and care she brings to her medical practice.
Running a business was new territory.
“Medical school teaches you how to save lives, not how to manage staff, finances, or a growing practice,” Dr Rana said.
But with the support of mentors—particularly Bill and Julie Boyd, who helped her navigate the complexities of Medicare and private health funds—Dr Rana quickly mastered the business side of medicine.
Fast forward to today, and her clinic boasts one of the highest IVF success rates in Queensland, a testament to her skill, dedication, and the deep trust her patients place in her. Dr Rana is the first to acknowledge that her success isn’t just her own. She firmly believes that the team around her plays an instrumental role in everything she has achieved. From the compassionate midwives who provide unwavering support to the administration team who, as she puts it, "almost literally organise my life," she knows she couldn’t do it without them.
"Without my team, I would be lost," she says.
"Their care, dedication, and ability to keep everything running smoothly allow me to focus on what I do best—helping my patients on their fertility journey."
Success in business is one thing. Success while juggling a medical career and three children is another. For Dr Rana, balance comes down to two things: planning and support. She meticulously schedules her year, aligning work commitments with school holidays to ensure quality family time. A strong support system—including a cleaner, a home helper, and a nanny—allows her to focus on her patients during the day and be fully present for her children in the evenings.
She also credits her husband, a psychiatrist, as her rock. Both with demanding careers, they share responsibilities and carve out time for themselves—whether it’s a Netflix night or a well-deserved family holiday.
Dr Rana is passionate about encouraging young women to chase their dreams, especially in medicine. Her advice?
“Be clear about your goals and work relentlessly towards them.
“Medicine is demanding, but it doesn’t have to come at the expense of fun and balance.”
She also believes in seizing opportunities.
“Life presents chances for growth, and success comes from saying ‘yes’ to challenges—even when they seem daunting.”
If she had hesitated when Dr Herron fell ill, she might never have discovered her talent for business.
For women navigating careers and families, she emphasises the importance of structure and support.
“You can have it all—just not all at once.
“Prioritisation, delegation, and a little self-care go a long way.”
When she’s not transforming lives in the clinic, Dr Rana is an avid traveller. With 35 countries under her belt, she finds joy in exploring nature, history, and different cultures. She also loves cooking, ensuring her family eats nutritious, balanced meals despite their hectic schedules.
Her story is proof that success isn’t about having an easy path—it’s about making the most of the journey.
From doctor to businesswoman, from England to Mackay, and from part-time practitioner to leading one of Queensland’s most successful fertility clinics, Dr Ritu Rana embodies resilience, ambition, and the power of saying ‘yes’ to new opportunities.
She may have come to Mackay in search of sunshine, but in the process, she brought her own light, warming the lives of those she helps and guides.

Items Always in My Handbag
You'll always find a Christian Dior lip balm and Lancôme La Vie Est Belle perfume in my handbag. I've used them for at least eight years—I dislike dry lips and always want to smell good! I also keep them in my desk drawer at work, so I'm never without them. When travelling, I always carry La Roche face serum, which keeps my skin soft and refreshed.
Something People May Not Know About Me
I have a passion for fashion and makeup. I love dressing up for social occasions and experimenting with different styles. My 16-year-old daughter is actually better at makeup than I am, and I love learning from her!

At just 23, Kelisha Day is proving that age and gender are no barriers to success in the high-stakes world of commercial real estate. As a Sales and Leasing Executive with Explore Property Commercial, she’s not just finding the perfect spaces for businesses—she’s carving out her own place in an industry traditionally dominated by men.
Kelisha’s story is one of grit, persistence, and a genuine love for helping people. Her journey began in 2019, not with a glamorous job offer, but as a determined young woman handing in her resume—and then following up until she got her foot in the door. From her first role as a personal assistant to director Jordan Miller, she soaked up every aspect of the business, moving to Brisbane to manage a property portfolio before returning to Mackay to take on sales and leasing. Since then, it’s been non-stop growth, both for Kelisha and the clients who trust her expertise.
“In commercial real estate, I’m here to make a difference,” Kelisha says.
“Yes, it’s a male-dominated industry, and that comes with its challenges. But I love proving myself, getting deals done, and earning that repeat business.”
Kelisha’s approach sets her apart. In an industry where transactions can feel impersonal, she makes it her mission to guide clients through the entire journey.
“It’s not just about a contract on paper—it’s about building relationships, ensuring clients understand the process, and helping businesses find the perfect space to thrive.”
Her expertise is backed by an impressive track record of successful deals. One standout achievement was her involvement in the sale of 135-137 Nebo Road. When the property first hit the market, it was only 60 per cent occupied. Determined to add value, Kelisha took the lead in sourcing tenants, crafting detailed layout plans to match their needs, and working closely with builders to bring the fit-outs to life. Her hands-on approach resulted in full occupancy and a 15 per cent uplift on the final sale price.
Beyond sales, Kelisha has been instrumental in securing some of the largest commercial leasing deals in Mackay’s CBD in recent years. Many of these spaces started as cold shells, but with her strategic planning, she transformed them into high-quality tenancies with competitive rental rates—delivering exceptional outcomes for both landlords and the broader Mackay business community.
When asked who inspires her, Kelisha doesn’t cite high-profile moguls or real estate tycoons.
“My mum,” she says without hesitation.
“She’s a go-getter, she taught me that hard work brings results, and nothing comes to you by doing nothing.”
It’s a philosophy Kelisha embodies daily—pushing forward, making her mark, and proving that passion and persistence are the ultimate game-changers in business.
If the past five years are any indication, this young go-getter is only just getting started.

“We’re a one-stop shop,” Rebecca explains.
“We listen, we adapt, and we deliver solutions that work for our clients. Safety, compliance, and technology integration are key, but above all, it’s our reputation for reliability and service that sets us apart.”
Her leadership is shaped by a lifetime of strong female role models, from historical figures to the inspiring women in her own family.
“My mother, daughter, and aunties have been incredible examples of resilience,” she says.
“They’ve shown me that strength and grace can coexist, and that even in male-dominated industries, we can make a lasting impact.”
Bec’s daughter Paige is following in her footsteps, working as a contract administrator in the family business. It’s a shift she’s proud to witness, particularly as the industry continues to evolve.
“Construction has traditionally been a boys’ club, but the tide is turning,” she says.
“Women are proving themselves in every aspect, from technical roles to leadership. The key is to back yourself, keep learning, and know your worth.”
Despite juggling multiple businesses, Bec has found the perfect counterbalance—one with a fluffy face and a penchant for mischief. As a dedicated Valais Blacknose sheep breeder, her farm is more than just a retreat; it’s a passion project.
“Spending afternoons on the farm with our cows, sheep, chickens, and ducks is my escape. It keeps me grounded and reminds me of what truly matters.”
Breeding these rare and sought-after sheep is a labour of love, adding yet another unique skill to her already impressive repertoire.
Bec’s passion for her work is undeniable, but her drive extends beyond business. She’s committed to mentoring the next generation of women in construction and leadership, paving the way for a future where opportunity isn’t defined by gender.
“The road hasn’t always been easy, but the progress we’ve made is exciting,” she says.
“If I can inspire even one young woman to step into this industry with confidence, then I’ve done my job.”

Behind every piece of machinery at CiteHire, there’s a story of connection, expertise, and growth—and Mel Cook is the person making it all happen. As the Business Development Manager at the Mackay-based equipment hire company, Mel is a driving force behind the company’s growth, blending technical know-how with a passion for building lasting relationships. But while she’s just as comfortable behind a desk, the gear and the people she works with are what truly fuel her drive.
“I’m not just pushing paper; I’m making sure people get the right tools to get the job done,” says Mel, who brings 14 years of experience in the hire industry to her role.
“I thrive on understanding the equipment and how it fits into a wider solution for businesses. It’s about offering more than just a rental—it’s about being a partner to our customers.”
CiteHire’s success in the industry is testament to Mel’s unique skill set, which combines a deep understanding of operational logistics with a knack for forging meaningful customer connections.
Whether it’s helping a local contractor find the perfect tool or coordinating the logistics of large civil machinery, Mel’s approach has always been customer-centric.

“We genuinely care about the people we work with and the businesses we support. That’s what excites me every day.”
In an industry historically dominated by men, Mel has found her place and earned the respect of her peers, thanks to her hard-earned expertise and no-nonsense approach.
“It hasn’t always been easy,” she admits. “But I’ve always approached my role with knowledge and confidence. Once people realise I understand the machinery inside and out, they see me as a valuable part of the conversation.”
For Mel, a key part of her success has been finding the right work-life balance, a challenge she approaches with the same focus she brings to her career.
“It’s about setting boundaries and knowing when to switch off,” she explains.
“That personal time—whether it’s on the water or with family—is crucial for me to recharge.”

For Amanda Camm, leadership isn’t just about holding office—it’s about driving change, amplifying voices, and rolling up her sleeves to get things done.
As the newly appointed Minister for Families, Seniors and Disability Services, and Minister for Child Safety and Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence, she has stepped into a role that is both deeply challenging and profoundly impactful. And yet, despite the weight of responsibility, she remains grounded in the community that shaped her.
“It’s humbling to be given the opportunity to take on an incredibly important and complex portfolio,” Amanda shares.
“We are embarking on massive reforms in domestic and family violence prevention and child protection, and I’m committed to making a meaningful difference.”
Her appointment marks a historic moment for the region, building on a family legacy of public service. Her great-uncle, Ron Camm, was the longest-serving Member for Whitsunday, with ministerial roles spanning mining, energy, police, and northern development.
“He always fought for our community, and we are humbled by his reputation,” she says.
“The bridge connecting North Mackay over the Pioneer River is named in his honour, and the issues he was fighting for—Bruce Highway funding and affordable energy—are still the issues today.”
Juggling ministerial duties with local representation is no easy feat, but Amanda is determined to ensure Whitsunday remains front and centre.
“My priority is to serve the people of Whitsunday, and I always enjoy being out and about in our community,” she says.
“My schedule is always full, but I wouldn’t have it any other way—I’m not going to waste a minute!”
As a woman in leadership, Amanda is passionate about encouraging the next generation to step up and carve out their own paths.
“Don’t be afraid to stand up for what you believe in, take risks, and don’t shy away from challenges,” she advises.
“The road to where you want to go might be the one less travelled, particularly if you come from a regional area, but anything is possible if you work hard enough and believe in yourself.”
Beyond politics, Amanda is always pushing herself to learn, grow, and stay grounded.
“I love yoga!
“I completed my teacher training when I was 40 and try to practise or meditate most days,” she reveals.
“And last year, at 45, I completed my Master of Business Administration. It took me five years while working and it nearly wore me down, but I finally got there!”
Throughout her journey, Amanda has drawn inspiration from incredible women who dedicated their lives to service.
“Recently, our community lost two amazing women, Dorne Wallace and Bridgeen Doherty.
“I’ve been blessed to meet so many smart, generous women who have given so much to others. Their legacy lives on.”
From the halls of parliament to the heart of her electorate, Amanda Camm is proving that leadership isn’t just about policy—it’s about people.

Climbing the property ladder is no easy feat, especially in an industry long dominated by men. Yet, Stephanie McWhirter, Principal of Belle Property Whitsundays, has not only navigated these challenges but firmly established herself as a leader in the field.
Stephanie's journey into real estate began with a simple yet powerful motivation: a passion for helping people find their dream homes. Growing up in a family that valued community and connection, she understood early on the importance of creating spaces that reflect not only personal style but also foster relationships.
After completing her education and gaining experience in the industry, Stephanie opened Belle Property Whitsundays, a renowned name known for its premium service and innovative approach to real estate. “I opened my own real estate company to fulfil a vision of creating the best service in the Whitsundays! Additionally, I wanted to build a team that shares this commitment, cultivating a culture of integrity and excellence!”
What sets Stephanie apart is her unwavering dedication to her clients. She believes that real estate is not just about transactions; it’s about building relationships. Her approach is personalised, taking the time to understand each client's unique circumstances and aspirations. Whether working with first-time buyers, seasoned investors, or families looking to upgrade, Stephanie’s commitment to providing tailored solutions has earned her a loyal clientele.
Loving her job and finding the real estate realm truly captivating, Stephanie acknowledged that while the industry is challenging, it is also incredibly rewarding.
“You’ve got to put in a lot of work, a lot of dedication; but to me it’s all about service and being consistent. It’s about saying what you’re going to do and then doing it.
“If you're willing to put in the effort, there’s really no limit to what you can achieve,” Stephanie explained.
Stephanie's drive was evident from the outset. By her second year in the industry, she earned multiple accolades, including the Rising Star award. Her success continued with the Chairman’s Elite award, ranking her among Australia’s top 1% of agents. Most recently, she was named a top 10 agent on realestate.com.au and the sole qualifier for the Whitsunday region, solidifying her industry reputation.
Stephanie reflects on the best business advice she’s ever received: “You can’t do it all.” She emphasises that this often means enlisting the help of a personal assistant or mentor, but above all, it’s about surrounding yourself with the right people. Currently working in a close-knit team of three to four individuals, she notes, “There’s a tremendous amount of work behind every single sale that people don’t see. A strong team ensures nothing gets overlooked, leading to a better experience for both buyers and sellers. It also enables us to serve more clients, more often.”
Stephanie underscores the importance of continuous learning and personal growth:
“Be Coachable! I remember when I hired my first coach, she asked me if I was going to be a know it all or a learn it all. It's something I’ve never forgotten.”
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Stephanie is deeply committed to giving back to the community. She actively participates in local charities and events, believing that a strong community fosters a thriving real estate market. Her philanthropic efforts reflect her values and desire to make a positive impact on the lives of those around her:
“It all comes down to empathy—genuinely caring about people and always doing the right thing by the person in front of you, especially in a small town."
As Stephanie McWhirter continues to thrive at Belle Property, she remains focused on expanding her reach while preserving her personal touch. Adaptable to real estate’s evolving landscape, she continues to deliver top-tier service.
For other women striving to succeed in their careers, Stephanie offers this advice: “Don’t base your value on anyone else’s opinion of you. If you have a dream, don’t just think about it—work relentlessly toward it and let your results speak for themselves.”
