Skin Esteem Has the Answer

Struggling with your skin can feel like a silent battle, slowly chipping away at your confidence, no matter your age. Whether you’ve dealt with breakouts since your teens or are facing flare-ups later in life, you’re not alone.

At Skin Esteem, founder Jo Parker offers more than just skincare. She brings empathy, expertise, and a supportive space where clients feel truly seen. Having faced her own skin challenges from the age of 14, Jo understands the emotional toll skin issues can take.

“My mum booked me a facial for my 14th birthday, and I was hooked,” Jo says. “I was fascinated by what the therapist was doing. It sparked an obsession. I just wanted to learn how to treat skin and help people feel good in theirs.”

Jo’s approach is deeply client-focused, aiming to treat more than just the surface. With services ranging from lymphatic drainage massage to personalised skin plans, Skin Esteem is where results and relaxation meet. It's a place to reset, feel empowered, and embrace your natural beauty.

“Getting results is one thing,” Jo explains. “But I’ve found the clinic experience needs to be therapeutic too. It’s not just about the skin. It’s about how the client feels. If I can help someone feel better about themselves, or simply give them an hour to pause, then I’ve done my job.”

Every treatment plan is tailored following a complimentary consultation. Jo takes the time to understand each individual’s concerns and develops a personalised approach that aligns with their goals. Her method is non-judgemental and respectful. She never points out flaws but instead lets clients take the lead in expressing what they’d like to address.

“There’s nothing better than seeing someone’s eyes light up after a treatment,” Jo says. “And hearing how they feel afterwards. That’s everything.”

“Sometimes it’s just a small treatment, like IPL. It might not seem like much, but it can make a world of difference. It helps with pigmentation and encourages healing, especially in those stubborn spots that won’t improve on their own. For me, that’s the special part. Knowing that something so simple on my end can be truly life-changing for someone else. That’s what makes it so rewarding.”

“I really do care about the outcome of each person.”

Skin Esteem emphasises that consistency is key when it comes to your skin. “A lot of people start something and give up too quickly because we’re so used to instant results, especially with social media. But if you’ve got a skin concern, it can take up to 12 months to see real change. You’ve got to stick with it—consistency is everything. If you’re going to start something, give it a solid three months before deciding whether it’s working for you or not,” Jo explained.

What is the best food or supplement you can’t live without for maintaining healthy skin?

“Collagen! We stop producing collagen naturally after the age of 23, and from there it decreases by about 1% every year. That’s essentially the ageing process. But the good news is, you can actually trick the body into stimulating those collagen-producing fibroblasts, helping your skin create more collagen well into later life.”

What's a common misconception or health myth about skin that you'd love to debunk?

“Glass skin facials. There’s no such thing as glass skin—real skin has texture and tone. A lot of what you see online is just filters, lighting, and heavy oils. It’s not realistic, but people come in asking for it all the time. It’s especially harmful for young people who think that kind of skin is achievable, when it’s not. It really messes with their mental health.”

Allison Bekker, an award-winning solopreneur and the force behind Skin Transformations, continues to lead the way in innovation within the beauty and wellness industry. With a career spanning nearly two decades, Allison is widely recognised for delivering life-changing transformative results, thanks to her unmatched expertise and dedication to excellence.

Since beginning her journey as a beauty therapist in 2006, Allison has consistently evolved her services to stay at the forefront of the industry. Since 2021, she has offered plasma treatments with unmatched expertise to her practice, offering clients cutting-edge, non-invasive solutions for a wide range of skin concerns. Her commitment to professional growth and outstanding client care was formally recognised in 2024 when she was awarded Best Solopreneur in Australia at the Australian Beauty and Cosmetic Tattoo Awards.

This August, Allison is set to achieve another significant milestone as she completes her enrolled nursing qualification. This accomplishment allows her to gain insurance approval to perform more advanced skin-removal techniques, including intimate skin rejuvenation and remodelling, as well as xanthelasma removal—an advanced procedure that addresses calcium deposits around the eyes. Following this, Allison plans to study a diploma in dermatology and begin performing skin checks, further establishing her position as a leader in both worlds of beauty and clinical skin care.

To take her services to the next level, Allison has introduced the Plasma Fusion USA device—the first of its kind in Mackay. This state-of-the-art technology represents the pinnacle of plasma energy innovation, combining efficiency with top-tier safety standards, designed to deliver outstanding results in skin tightening, resurfacing, and healing. With this advanced tool, Allison is poised to elevate her treatments even further, ensuring every client receives personalised care and exceptional results.

With its precision and effectiveness, Plasma energy works by stimulating healthy cell regeneration from the deepest layers of the skin. There are three types of plasma energy: hot plasma, which removes tissue such as skin tags, moles, and loose skin; warm plasma, which resurfaces the skin by reducing pigmentation, open pores, and fine lines; and cold plasma, which sterilises and stimulates healing, making it especially useful for conditions like rosacea, eczema, and psoriasis.

“The versatility of plasma energy is truly remarkable,” says Allison. “Whether it’s reducing hooded eyelids, enhancing skin texture and elasticity, smoothing wrinkles, or safely removing unwanted lesions like seborrheic keratosis, skin tags, and moles without scarring—it consistently delivers outstanding results.”

With the addition of this world-class technology and her expanding qualifications, Allison’s passion for empowering others through confidence-boosting solutions is the driving force behind her success – because everyone deserves to feel beautiful in their own skin.

What’s the most rewarding part of being a health expert in today’s world?

"It’s the opportunity to empower individuals with the knowledge and tools to transform their lives. In the beauty and skin health industry, there is nothing more fulfilling than witnessing the confidence that flourishes when clients achieve real, personalised results.

Where Tradition And Wellness Align

Bay Massage & Homeopathy
Dr Dee Nereda Hacking

They say healing is both an art and a science, but at Bay Massage & Homeopathy, it’s also a legacy. Dr Dee Nereda Hacking offers something refreshingly different – a healing experience grounded in understanding, tradition, and heart. As the owner, physician, and sole practitioner behind Bay Massage & Homeopathy, she has spent nearly three decades blending the science of medicine with the soul of natural healing.

It seems Dr Dee was always destined for this path.

“I grew up in a natural and homeopathic household where remedies, medicinal plants, and teas were the norm,” she says.

With a lineage steeped in both traditional and natural medicine, including her English grandfather, lovingly known as “Doc,” it was no surprise when she announced her dream of becoming a healer, a doctor, and an author.

Now, as she celebrates 30 years in business in 2025, her clinic stands as a testament to those childhood dreams made real.

Beyond conventional medical approaches, her heart lies in the way she sees people…the whole person, not just the symptoms.

“Homeopathy, as a medical tool, takes a deep dive into all aspects of your health – physical, mental, emotional states, and even your personality. And it works!”

No rushed visits or checklists. She listens, observes, and connects. Dr Dee explores your diet, family history, emotional landscape, and goals, creating a personalised healing pathway just for you.

“Holistic wellness is more than the body or medicine. It’s a transformative connection between mind, energy, and the human form – far more than a machine that needs fixing.

“I treat the whole you – mind, body, and spirit.”

Dr Dee’s treatments include homeopathy, injury management massage, reflexology, shiatsu, hypnotherapy, alpha brain wave therapy, CBT, lymphatic drainage, oxygen therapy, tuning fork vibrational healing, and infrared light therapy. These modalities work in a continuum of support, designed not just to help people feel better, but to live better too.

Over the years, she’s earned a reputation as “that alternative” when nothing else seems to work.

“I often get ‘last resort’ patients who feel overwhelmed or broken… holistically lost, or just ready to give up.”

These are the people who move her most. With great compassion behind her work, she offers a space where stories are heard, solutions are gentle, and personal achievements are possible.

“As someone driven by dreams and goals from a young age, I know how powerful support can be, and that’s why I’m here to offer that support.

“With a listening ear, and the right modalities, dreams can be achieved.”

Let Bay Massage & Homeopathy help you begin that journey.

Empowered Beauty

Nicole Shir’s Aura-Infused Approach To Skin Confidence

Nicole Shir isn’t just transforming skin, she’s changing the way people think about self-care. A powerhouse in the field of cosmetic medicine, the Townsville-based Nurse Practitioner has poured her years of clinical expertise and intuitive care into creating something truly special: Aura Oil.

This naturally potent skincare elixir has already made waves locally and internationally, with demand soaring in Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Israel, and Dubai. In fact, Nicole shared that in the past four months, she has hit more than 1,000 sales.

“Aura Oil is revolutionising skin wellness with its expertly crafted blend,” Nicole explains.

“It’s designed to nourish, hydrate and enhance vitality using natural anti-ageing properties. Clients tell me their skin feels smoother, plumper, and more alive—and they’re glowing from the inside out.”

Made from 100 per cent non-toxic, chemical-free ingredients, Aura Oil is as safe as it is effective.

“Research shows that topical products can enter the bloodstream in as little as 20 seconds,” she says.

“I knew I had to formulate something that was completely clean, no BPAs, phthalates, or glyphosates, just pure, skin-loving nourishment.”

Nicole’s journey to becoming one of North Queensland’s most respected cosmetic professionals began over two decades ago. After graduating with a Bachelor of Nursing from La Trobe University in 2000, she spent several years immersed in Melbourne’s bustling hospital system. It was during her time at a cosmetic plastic surgery clinic on Chapel Street in 2007 that her passion for aesthetic medicine truly took root. Starting as a scrub theatre nurse, Nicole became fascinated by the science and artistry behind non-surgical cosmetic treatments, eventually making the leap into full-time cosmetic injectables and advanced skin therapies.

At her flagship clinic, Townsville Anti-Aging, she introduced the region’s first Morpheus8 device in 2023, a gold standard in fractional skin rejuvenation. But Nicole’s mission extends far beyond devices and procedures.

“It’s about helping people reclaim their glow on their own terms,” she says.

“Whether it’s simplifying a chaotic skincare routine or guiding a patient through injectables for the first time, I want every person to feel confident, supported, and heard.”

That same philosophy guided the creation of Aura Oil.

“It’s skincare with soul,” she says.

“I wanted something that not only worked beautifully but also fit seamlessly into the lives of busy women, and men, who don’t want 10-step routines. Just one product that hydrates, heals, and enhances.”

The results speak for themselves. From glowing online testimonials to heartfelt feedback from long-time clients, Aura Oil has quickly gained cult status. One fan, Dr. Deanne McGeachie, shares:

“I’m usually sceptical about beauty products, but Aura Oil has been a game-changer. My complexion is smoother, softer, and noticeably plumper. I even use it as a lip gloss! It’s the first product that’s actually worked without causing breakouts.”

Nicole’s reputation is built on authenticity, care, and clinical rigour, and she brings that same energy into every bottle of Aura Oil. Her vision is simple: skincare should be intuitive, ethical, and effective. It should support the body’s natural functions rather than overwhelm them. And above all, it should empower.

“It’s not about erasing every line or changing how someone looks,” she says.

“It’s about enhancing their natural beauty, simplifying their routine, and helping them feel grounded and seen.

“That’s where the real glow comes from.”

So, what’s her secret to glowing skin and a nourished soul? We asked Nic to share her best-kept rituals.

Go-to beauty advice?

“Glowing skin isn’t just about what you put on—it’s about what you put in. A nourishing diet, proper hydration, and high-performing skincare? That’s the ultimate trifecta. I swear by healthy fats like avocado and flaxseed, antioxidant-rich foods like berries and leafy greens, and lots of filtered water. Then seal the deal with a few Aura Oil drops daily to lock in moisture and support your skin barrier.”

Daily rituals that support skin and soul?

“Glowing skin doesn’t thrive in stress mode. Even five minutes a day—gua sha, breathwork, or just mindfully pressing Aura Oil into your skin—can recalibrate your nervous system. Less cortisol, more collagen. It’s not about perfection—it’s about showing up for yourself in small, beautiful ways.”

Bone marrow and filtered water? We’re intrigued.

“Yep, I’m that girl! Bone marrow is an underrated superfood—packed with collagen, healthy fats, and minerals that literally feed your skin from the inside out. And filtered water? It’s the simplest upgrade you can make. Tap water is fine for plants, but your skin deserves better.”

What’s the best part of your job?

“Watching people reclaim their glow—on their own terms. Whether it’s simplifying their skincare routine or helping them finally feel hydrated, smooth, and calm in their skin—that never gets old. I love helping time-poor women feel supported, without adding more noise to their day.”

Final word on self-care?

“Essential. Like, non-negotiable. We’re all overstimulated and juggling too much. Self-care doesn’t have to be extravagant. Sometimes it’s choosing water over a third coffee. Sometimes it’s taking three minutes to breathe while you apply your oil. These little moments remind us that we matter—skin, soul, and all.”

Testimonial:

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

"Never have I tried an oil like this! Optimal hydration with all-day glow. It’s an experience I’m really loving—the well-balanced scent is simply divine."

The Big Re-Set

How Changing Your Diet Can Change Your Life

With Nutritionist Rebecca Tarver

Imagine waking up each day feeling energised, confident, and truly yourself. You’re thriving, full of vitality and moving through life with ease. You feel good in your skin, and your body is working with you, not against you. This is how you deserve to feel in your forties. This is how you could feel with the right guidance and advice from clinical nutritionist Rebecca Tarver.

For many women approaching perimenopause (the 10-15 years leading up to menopause), this version of yourself can feel more like a distant memory. Instead of the vibrant woman you once were, you’re now facing a reflection that feels foreign, a body that seems to be shifting beneath you, with weight gain (especially around the midsection), fatigue, and hormonal changes that leave you feeling disconnected from who you used to be.

The slow weight gain and full-scale protest from the waistband of your favourite jeans, loss of energy, and rollercoaster emotions can feel like an overwhelming challenge. You feel like you are doing everything right but getting nowhere. What used to work for your body may no longer have the same effect, and no matter how hard you try, it can feel like you’re stuck in a cycle you can’t break. This can be the reality of perimenopause, but it doesn’t have to be this way.

Here’s the thing: Your body is playing by different rules. Exercise, while important, is only about 20% of the equation. The real key to feeling better lies in addressing the remaining 80%, your diet.

Imagine if you could fuel your body with food that is perfectly aligned with its changing needs. Instead of battling your hormones or struggling with weight gain, you could feel energised, balanced, and truly yourself again. The right nutrition, tailored to your unique body, can be the catalyst for lasting change, helping you regain control and feel better than ever.

Rebecca has made it her mission to help women like you. Specialising in the metabolic changes of perimenopause, she empowers women in their 40s to break free from diet culture and discover a smarter, science-backed approach to lasting results. With a deep understanding of the biochemistry behind health, Rebecca combines evidence-based strategies with a personalised, empathetic approach that resonates with women who are tired of feeling misunderstood or told it’s part of aging.

As a mother of two teenagers, a business owner, and someone who juggles a full plate herself, Rebecca knows firsthand that life doesn’t pause just because your body feels like it’s shifting underneath you. She’s walked alongside countless women who are frustrated, flat, and stuck in clothes that don’t fit, desperate for change but unsure where to begin.

Her work goes beyond nutrition. It’s about restoring vitality, hormone balance, and self-trust at a time when women are often given advice better suited for a 25-year-old.

Through her Signature program, blending the power of the Metabolic Balance®, her clinical expertise in nutrition, and personalised support, Rebecca helps women navigate their forties with a tailored approach that helps them reclaim their spark.

Whether you’re struggling with hormonal imbalances, digestive discomfort, or simply seeking to feel more energised and confident, Rebecca’s approach gives you the tools to feel better, inside and out. With three package levels to choose from, you can book a free assessment or call to explore the best path forward for your body and lifestyle.

Consultations are available in-clinic and online, so wherever you are in Australia, expert help is just a Zoom link away.

Bucasia’s New Home For Slow Mornings And Smoky Sundays

May 16, 2025

The Grounds Collective Bucasia

Sometimes the sweetest success brews from second chances – in life, in love, and in coffee. Just ask Tammy and Dan, the heart and soul behind The Grounds Collective Bucasia, a new café bringing a relaxed Byron Bay vibe to Mackay’s northern beaches.

Nestled beside Annie’s Nursery on Mackay Bucasia Road, The Grounds Collective is more than just a café – it’s a story of reinvention, resilience and rekindled dreams. With its lush garden setting, indoor and outdoor seating,

Campos coffee, all-day brunch, cakes and a menu showcasing local produce, it’s become a haven for locals looking to unwind.

But before the café came to life, Tammy and Dan were crafting a different kind of story.

“I was living in northern New South Wales and Dan was working FIFO when we met in 2019,” Tammy said. Both had been previously married and already had children of their own.

Then COVID struck, and border closures separated them for nearly 10 months.

“It was a very difficult time for everyone,” Tammy said.

“When the border reopened briefly in 2020, we reconnected in Queensland, and soon after, it closed again. That’s when I decided to stay and build a new life in North Queensland."

The couple rented a small cabin at Mt Jukes for 18 months before buying a home at Haliday Bay.

“It wasn’t part of the plan,” Dan said with a smile.

“But life had other ideas.”

Tammy, with a background in corporate finance and small business ownership, had long dreamed of opening a café.

“I’ve always been obsessed with food,” she laughed.

“I’ve travelled the world and planned holidays around restaurants.”

Dan and Tammy have eaten at some of the top venues – from street food in Vietnam to fine dining in France.

One of Tammy’s finest dining moments was on an Italian cliffside at Nessun Dorma, where you can make your own pesto and then bask in the Mediterranean sunshine while sipping fine wine.

In late 2022, after a mandatory COVID vaccination required for her employment, Tammy was diagnosed with the heart condition of Pericarditis, which has since resulted in more than 60 days in hospital, and two cardiac operations. The health crisis sidelined overseas travel and ultimately ended her time in the mining industry, prompting her to refocus on her true passion. The opportunity to take over the old café site next to Annie’s Nursery came up unexpectedly.

“When we walked into the space, we could see the potential,” Dan said.

Dan is a cabinet maker by trade, and the couple rolled up their sleeves to completely refit the kitchen and rebuild the front counter from scratch, transforming the space into something uniquely their own. Their focus was clear from the start: good food, a calming, down-to-earth atmosphere, and a place where locals – and their pets – could unwind.

A highlight on the upcoming calendar will be Smokin’ Sundays, where the smoker gets fired up for a mouth-watering selection of slow-cooked meats, served to the soundtrack of live local music. The long-term dream is to have a licensed bar on site, but for now, it’s a laid-back BYO vibe.

Built with love, grounded in good taste, and proof that life’s best chapters often come second time around, The Grounds Collective Bucasia is more than a café.

It’s a comeback story.

Keeping It Cool

May 16, 2025

With Matthew And Che Ruddell

From McGuire Air & Refrigeration

When the heat of Mackay’s summer sets in, there's one name that comes to mind for keeping things cool: McGuire Air & Refrigeration. For over 30 years, this local business has been keeping homes and businesses comfortable, and now, the baton has been passed to the lively duo of Matthew and Che Ruddell.

Fusing cheeky charm with sharp expertise, this couple is turning up the energy while keeping temperatures down.

Originally founded by local legend Barney McGuire, McGuire Air & Refrigeration has become a staple in the community. And now, Matthew and Che are ready to continue that same legacy of excellence, bringing a fresh, modern approach to the trusted name.

Specialising in residential and commercial air conditioning, McGuire Air & Refrigeration offers a variety of services, including installation and maintenance, as well as repairs for split systems, cassettes, ducted units, and VRV systems.

“We do everything in the air conditioning space,” Matthew says. “Residential, commercial, breakdowns, installs – you name it.”

Matthew and Che’s dedication to high-quality service and products ensures systems run smoothly, even on Mackay’s hottest days.

“We’re proud to be part of the community and to keep delivering the best service we can,” Matthew adds.

“We use top-quality products, we don’t cut corners, and we always aim to get it right the first time.”

While the business has stayed true to its roots, the Ruddells bring their own unique touch to the operations. And though some might find working together with a spouse challenging, Matthew and Che make it look easy…

“You’ve got to be ready to argue a bit,” Matthew jokes, “But also ready to listen.”

“You have to listen to each other’s perspectives and use that to make good decisions within the business.

“Che is structured and bossy – but in a good way, whereas I’m more the people-person…and together, it just works.”

The couple also juggles family life with running the business, balancing work with their three children, along with the added schedules that come with it. Whether it’s attending their daughter’s dance recitals or supporting their son’s sporting games, family is at the heart of everything they do.

“We tag-team a lot,” says Matthew.

“Che might work later some days, and I’ll be at the kids’ events, or vice versa. But we make it work.

“Family is everything to us.”

And when it comes to customer service, McGuire Air & Refrigeration stands by its commitment to do things right.

Their motto? “If we f**k it, we fix it.”

“We take full responsibility for our work,” says Matthew.

“If something goes wrong, we make it right. We stand behind what we do because our customers are what make us who we are.”

Leaving Footprints In The Sand

May 16, 2025

With Nick and Cath Uit den Bogaard

At Comfort Resort Blue Pacific

Behind every great business is a passionate couple with a heart for serving others. With over two decades of love poured into Comfort Resort Blue Pacific, Nick and Cath Uit den Bogaard are preparing to trade the working day for late sunsets and coastal road trips.

After 25 colourful, heart-filled years at the helm of their beautiful beachside escape, the couple is ready to pass the torch, and the keys, to a new owner ready to carry on their legacy.

Tucked away on the golden sands of Blacks Beach, just north of Mackay, Comfort Resort Blue Pacific has long been a treasured destination for travellers, corporate guests, and locals looking for a coastal getaway close to home.

But it’s the magic behind the front desk, the familiar smiles, the personal welcomes, and the friendly approach that’s kept guests returning, year after year, and generation after generation.

Nick and Cath never saw themselves as "managers" or "owners," but rather hosts, fixers, listeners and problem-solvers.

“We’re of the firm belief you don’t stay in the same business for 25 years if its not a great business”, Nick said.

For them, being present, boots on the ground, and getting involved, was their way of enjoying the lifestyle the business offers.

“We’ve always done it together,” Cath explained.

“We have our own special roles, and it all just fits together.”

She’s the face of the place, managing bookings, chatting with guests, running the socials and sometimes…diffusing the occasional high-stress holiday moment with her trademark calm.

“Take a breath. Let’s have another look,” she’ll say, gently guiding guests and staff alike through the stay experience.

Nick, on the other hand, has a sharp eye for detail. You’ll often find him trimming the hedges, or managing paperwork behind the scenes.

“I love my yard work…I like to make sure the front lawn is perfect,” he enthused.

With a hospitality resume spanning many motels before he took on Blue Pacific, Nick had a fair idea what worked, and what didn’t.

Cath, too, brought many years of industry experience, having worked across tourism roles in Victoria, Tasmania and Queensland with the South Australian Tourism Commission and North West Qld Tourism and Development Board. When the couple took over the resort in 2000, it felt like destiny.

“We were the perfect match,” Cath says. “And not just in marriage.”

Over the years, they raised their son among the palm trees and beachside barbecues.

“He was five when we moved in,” Cath remembers.

“He grew up here, and he loved it.”

Running a business as a couple is often, but not always, a beach stroll of course.

So, what’s their secret? “Always communicate,” Cath affirmed.

“And never forget to kiss each other goodnight,” Nick nods.

With tears filling both of their eyes, Nick confirms, “She’s my best mate.”

“And we’ve always backed each other up, through thick and thin”.

Now, as Nick navigates some health challenges and the couple prepares to check out for the final time, they’re looking ahead to a new kind of adventure…this time, on wheels.

“We bought a caravan,” Cath says with a twinkle in her eye.

“It’s time to go and do some travel ourselves.”

As they reflect on the past, they speak truthfully about the highs and lows.

“You need to be ready for the good, the bad, and the ugly,” Cath says.

“That kind of skill…you can’t learn it from a textbook. You’ve got to adapt to it.”

“If you lose that passion for the place, the business suffers,” she adds.

“And above all, you’ve got to be a people person.”

They’ve had guests arrive worn down by the weight of the world – tired, stressed, sometimes even grieving – and leave lighter, smiling, and recharged.

“People come here to reconnect, to celebrate, to relax…and it’s been a real privilege to be part of that,” Nick says.

To the people who will purchase this piece of Paradise, Cath offers a mix of heartfelt advice and cheeky wisdom.

“Pay yourself first,” she says firmly.

“And be brave. Always, always remember, never judge a book by its cover.”

Nick chuckles. “Oh, and keep the lawn tidy.”

The couple will leave behind not only just a property, but a living, breathing family resort, and they’re doing so at a time when Comfort Resort Blue Pacific is shining as brightly as ever.

Recently recognised with the prestigious Best of Queensland Hotel/Motel Accommodation award at the 2024 Mackay Isaac Tourism Awards, the resort has proven itself not only as a leader in guest satisfaction but as a trailblazer in sustainable tourism.

With Gold secured for 3-3.5 Star Accommodation for the fourth year running and 5 Gold awards and Franchisee of the year 2022 with Choice Hotels, Nick and Cath are leaving their home in very good shape.

What’s more, the resort recently committed to the World Travel & Tourism Council’s Hotel Sustainability Basics program – a future-forward initiative focused on efficiency, environmental care and community connection.

“Just because you’ve been doing this for over 25 years, doesn’t mean you stop learning,” Cath says.

“We’re always open to new ideas.”

That curiosity and commitment to evolution is baked into the business, from the eco-initiatives to the beachfront upgrades, and even the grassed lawn overlooking the Coral Sea where guests can relax on sun loungers with a cold drink or fire up a BBQ under the stars.

It’s a lifestyle, yes…but it’s also a legacy.

For the right owner, perhaps another couple or family with a shared vision and a bit of pluck, this opportunity is more than a business acquisition.

It’s a chapter waiting to be written.

A love story to be continued.

Nick and Cath aren’t looking for replacements. They’re looking for torchbearers. People who will love this place, and its people, just as they have.

And now, as they prepare to drive off into the sunset, a little older, a lot wiser, and with their caravan in tow, they’re leaving behind more than memories. They’re leaving behind a blueprint for success built on mutual respect, hard work, a well-manicured lawn… and a goodnight kiss.

Proserpine Golf Course Celebrates 100 Years

May 16, 2025

The Proserpine Golf Club celebrated its Centenary on the first weekend of May and the excitement among members and locals was palpable. Whilst the club's genesis dates back to 1925, this landmark occasion is just as much about honouring its strong and thriving present as it is about reflecting on its rich and vibrant past.

With a steadily  growing membership of between 350 and 380 individuals, the club is a predominant hub for sport, social connection, and personal growth in the Proserpine community. Whether you are a seasoned veteran of the golf course or a starry-eyed novice, learning how to hold and swing your first golf club, the club prides itself on its welcoming and inclusive atmosphere.

As Golf Professional Roger Vandenberg explains, “The handicap system means anyone can play and be competitive, regardless of their ability.” The recent increase in the maximum handicap for women from 36 to 54 is one of many steps the club has taken to make the sport more inclusive and accessible.

Today, Proserpine Golf Club proudly possesses an 18-hole championship course, complete with beautifully picturesque surroundings of crystalline creeks, rolling cane fields and majestic gum trees.

Due to its modernised irrigation system, the course remains in excellent condition even through dry spells. The club also boasts a practice fairway, putting green, practice nets, and a cutting edge TrackMan training facility where golfers of all levels can fine-tune their swing by utilising state of the art professional grade technology.

Roger, who has had the pleasure of serving as the club's professional for almost a decade, offers everything from individual private lessons to group clinics, including groups for ladies and juniors. He also provides club fitting and equipment repair services. Roger is supported by his associate and aspiring professional golfer, Nathan. Their presence at Proserpine Golf Club has contributed significantly to its growth and sharp improvement in competition standards.

Off the golf course, the on-site Clubhouse provides an energetic social venue, hosting everything from birthdays to weddings, wakes and post-round catch-ups. Recent renovations, including new furniture and abundant parking spaces, have made the golf club even more inviting.

As the centenary edges ever closer, the club takes time to highlight the efforts of its many volunteers, sponsors and long-serving families whose stalwart dedication has helped shape its success. Their work has laid the foundation for what promises to be a memorable centennial celebration and exciting future.

From its friendly atmosphere to its first-class facilities, Proserpine Golf Club stands as a shining beacon of what a community-driven sporting club can become and after a century, the only direction is upwards.

Writing Their Own Chapter

How Dr Julia and Richard Evans are changing the publishing landscape, together

When Dr Julia Evans and Richard Evans founded 852 Press in 2020, they weren’t just launching an independent publishing consultancy — they were building a platform for writers to take control of their own stories.

At its heart, 852 Press is about demystifying the self-publishing process. Through clear, step-by-step education and concierge-style services, Julia and Richard guide authors from initial idea to final product, making the dream of becoming a published writer an achievable reality.

The Minds Behind 852 Press

With a background as an adult education expert, award-winning academic, and extensive experience in national policy advocacy, particularly in small business education, franchising, humanities, and the arts, Dr Julia Evans brings a wealth of experience in helping individuals turn their knowledge into lasting impact. Julia also manages the Whitsundays Chamber of Commerce and Industry and has two books of her own scheduled for release in 2026.

Her husband, Richard Evans, complements this educational foundation with a storytelling pedigree forged in the corridors of power. As a former federal member of parliament and Australia’s notable political crime author, Richard crafts thrillers that lay bare the realities of political life. His ninth novel, Horrible People, launched in 2025 alongside Australia’s federal election, draws directly from his first-hand experience. "These stories aren't imagined from afar," he says. "I've lived them."

Since 2020, Julia and Richard have been working to make publishing with a global reach more accessible and affordable for Australian writers, encouraging and equipping authors to take ownership of their creative journeys without sacrificing quality.

A Concierge Approach to Publishing

852 Press offers more than just advice; it delivers a hands-on, tailored service covering every facet of publishing—manuscript development, cover design, typesetting, marketing, and distribution. But above all, education remains their core mission: equipping writers the knowledge and skills to confidently manage their own publishing future.

"The publishing industry can be tough," Julia says. "Big publishers chase celebrities and top selling authors and rarely look at their ‘slush pile’, while too many predatory services exploit aspiring writers. At the same time, some authors need help elevating their work to a professional standard."

The company’s name, 852 Press, has special significance. It not only captures Richard's personal writing philosophy—eight revisions, five independent readers, and two expert editors—but also honours his tenure as Australia's 852nd federal parliamentarian.

Encouraging Authors Everywhere

From their base in the Whitsundays, Julia and Richard have spent the past three years running free workshops at libraries across the Greater Whitsundays, Townsville, and beyond. Their impact now extends internationally; during a recent world voyage aboard Cunard’s Queen Anne, they delivered 16 writing and publishing workshops to over 1,700 participants. Many attendees have since gone on to start or complete their own writing projects.

“Everyone has a story worth telling,” Richard says. "Whether your life has been marked by extraordinary events or quiet moments of reflection, finding your narrative thread can be transformational."

As Julia puts it, “Many writers are passionate but stuck. They just need the right tools, presented in a way they can understand and apply.” Through 852 Press, the couple’s workshops and services aim to bridge that gap.

Building a Business — and a Life — Together

Running a business as a married team presents its own unique challenges—and opportunities. Julia and Richard are the first to acknowledge that their success lies in respecting each other’s strengths.

“You have to amplify what the other person brings to the table," Julia explains. "Growth happens when you work on projects that energise you both."

Richard agrees. “Having separate workspaces and routines is crucial. You need to maintain your individuality. Plus, sharing household responsibilities and prioritising self-care makes it all sustainable.”

Together, Julia and Richard embody the spirit of collaboration—both in life and in business—working side by side to foster a more accessible and capable publishing world.

Their message to aspiring writers is simple and direct: If not now, when? When are you going to write your story?

Revving Up Careers

At McCarthy Panel Works

McCarthy Panel Works hit the gas once again with its second Auto Ready course and Careers Expo held on April 16, following the success of its inaugural event. Co-owner Andrea McCarthy was eager to bring the initiative back, recognising the vital role hands-on training plays in preparing students for real-world automotive careers.

“When I did it the first time, I would’ve been happy to do it every year.

“It works best with the training, so I was waiting to be able to run it again,” Andrea explained, emphasising her passion for nurturing the next generation of professionals.

The event provided local students with a unique opportunity to explore a broad range of automotive careers, from traditional panel work to cutting-edge roles in electric vehicles and automation. The Auto Ready program, part of MTAQ’s training modules, offered valuable insights, allowing students to gain QCE points while learning about the industry’s many paths.

“The event is only successful if it achieves the objectives set out,” Andrea shared, noting that this year’s expo focused on connecting students with businesses in need of apprentices.

The goal was not only to raise awareness but also to provide opportunities, and it delivered on both fronts.

One standout achievement was securing apprenticeships, including Summer Tonkin’s school-based apprenticeship in panel work at McCarthy Panel Works. The event also significantly raised the business’s profile, attracting local council representatives and government bodies, sparking interest around apprenticeship and work experience opportunities.

“I’m proud to be considered an employer of choice,” Andrea said.

In a region where skilled hands and driven minds keep the wheels of industry turning, McCarthy Panel Works is more than just a business – it’s a launchpad. With the pedal firmly to the metal, they’re steering students toward high-octane futures, proving the road to success is paved panel by panel.

Rewriting Futures Through Generosity

With MADEC

For many Australians living with disability or in care, life is lived on the edge of ‘just enough’. Enough to get by. Enough to pay for essentials. Enough to survive week to week.

But what about joy? What about belonging, adventure, dignity… what about living?

A weekend away with family. Tickets to see a favourite band live. A visit to a distant cultural site or ancestral Country. These are the kinds of experiences that bring meaning and connection – but for many locals living with disability, they remain out of reach due to the financial and logistical challenges involved.

“The NDIS doesn’t cover cost-of-living expenses or leisure travel – only supports that are directly tied to a person’s disability,” explains MADEC CEO Jasmine Lowry.

“For someone living on a disability pension, even a small outing or purchasing a coffee can mean going without something else.”

“That’s why this End of Financial Year, we’re asking the Mackay and Whitsundays community to consider donating — because your support can be the difference between just getting by and truly experiencing life.”

For over 50 years, MADEC has supported the Mackay and Whitsundays community with trusted youth and disability services. As a not-for-profit and public benevolent institution, we turn community donations into real-life impact.

“One young woman we support has a rare and aggressive form of Multiple Sclerosis and  had never been on a family holiday,” Jasmine shared.

“But with support from local partners, we were able to send Abby, her son, and her family to the Big 4 at Airlie Beach.

“It might not seem like much to some, but to her it was everything… a moment she dreamed of experiencing before entering palliative care.”

In another moving example of their life-changing support, MADEC provided funding to help a First Nations man fulfil his lifelong wish to find his mother’s grave.

“Andrew’s mother was part of the Stolen Generation,” Jasmine explained.

“We were able to help him reclaim his name, locate her burial site, and we’re now working on the logistics to get him there.

“These aren’t simple trips – there’s significant case management involved – but this means everything to Andrew, so we’re making it happen.”

To continue funding experiences like these, MADEC is calling on the local community to consider making a tax-deductible donation this End of Financial Year.

As a Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR), all donations over $2 are tax-deductible, making it easy to give back as the end of the financial year approaches.

“Workplace giving is another simple way to show your support, but it goes a long way,” Jasmine affirmed.

“Employees can nominate a small amount from each pre-tax pay, with 100% of those funds going directly to people like Abby and Andrew.”

“It helps us plan bigger goals and accomplish long-term dreams.”

Your generosity can help open the door to new experiences, connection, and joy—things we all deserve to share in.

A Taste of Tradition With Elisabeth Ribeiro from Deja-Vu

March 19, 2025

Elisabeth Ribeiro’s journey from Brazil to Australia at the age of 20 is one of resilience, ambition, and a desire to create something truly special for the people around her. Arriving in a new country with little knowledge of the English language, Elisabeth poured her time into her children for thirteen years before discovering her destiny as a business owner. Fast forward to today, she is the proud owner of Deja-Vu, a delightful gift shop café in Mackay that offers so much more than just a place to enjoy tea and coffee.

Deja-Vu is like stepping into another world. With its authentic mix of antiques, gifts, and charming furniture, the shop radiates a homely, welcoming vibe that creates opportunities for people to connect.

“I wanted to give people a nice place, to come sit and have a drink, whether it’s coffee, tea, or to just spend some time relaxing,” says Elisabeth.

“Once you’re here, you feel like you’re in another country.”

And she’s certainly succeeded in creating that atmosphere. In fact, much of her success can be attributed to the support she’s received from the previous owner, Kerri Ross, who ran the business for 21 years.

“She’s been lovely, and I can’t thank her enough for all the help she’s offered to me,” Elisabeth says.

Beyond regular café offerings, Elisabeth has a passion for bringing people together. That’s why she hosts beautiful high teas, which she believes are perfect for celebrating life’s special moments. Whether it's a baby shower, birthday party, or just a moment of indulgence, high tea at Deja-Vu is a celebration of life and community.

“People are always celebrating something, and I love that,” she shares.

Outside of Deja-Vu, Elisabeth is a master of multitasking. She manages her own Airbnb’s while continuing to support her husband's landscaping business – a venture she’s been involved in for over two decades.

Her passion for music runs deep and shines through her children, who excel in drums, piano, and orchestral performances. The Ribeiro family also enjoys camping and exploring new restaurants, fuelling Elisabeth’s love for food and culture.

Elisabeth’s story is one of purpose, joy, and the belief that you can achieve anything with hard work and faith.

“You can do anything…God will give you the strength to do it,” she says, and her journey serves as an inspiring reminder that anything is possible when you follow your passion and stay true to your values.

Whether you're popping in for a coffee, indulging in high tea with friends, or searching for a unique gift, Deja-Vu serves up more than just a cup of nostalgia. It’s a place where every sip feels familiar, yet delightfully new!

What’s a beauty product you can’t live without?

“I don’t wear makeup, but I always have red lipstick. It’s my only makeup,” she laughs.

What’s one word you would use to describe yourself?

“Happy… my friends always say I’m happy!”

What’s your favourite place to visit?

“The Sydney Opera House – It’s just beautiful there.”
